Saturday was the big day, and I did.. nothing. I read a book. Just sat outside and read a book. “Lucia in London”, which I had not read in ages. I also bought a small cake that was on sale for $6, so if I just ended up eating a few bites and tossing it I don’t feel bad (which is what I did- it was pretty terrible)

Rodeo Drive Concours 2026
Sunday was the Father’s Day car show on Rodeo, which this year seemed to be extra well-attended. Perhaps the FIFA effect- but it did mean that 1/2 hour before it was set to begin it was stuffed with people, That and a super-loud DJ playing “Music you hated in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s” and I just took enough shots for Autoextremist.com and went back to another book.
“Mapp & Lucia” this time.

Joan Crawford in “Letty Lynton”
And since I was reading a book featuring a war waged over chintz roses I wore roses out: Lush Rose Jam shower gel and SL Fils de Berlin. It was roses, roses, roses, and it was fantastic.
I also preordered an old movie that is finally coming to DVD/BluRay. It was kept out of the public sight for 100 years due to plagiarism concerns, but now has been restored. It will be released at the end of the month.
What did you get up to over the weekend? Let us know in the comments.

My husband is a huge film noir fan and did not know about Letty Lynton. He’s on the computer looking it up right now! He and I are both huge fans of Joan Crawford in Sudden Fear.
I ordered it. It will be interesting to see it.
Happy Birthday!!!!!
I did… huh. Oh, yeah. I gardened!
Imagine that 😉
Well that sounds wonderful.
So glad you had a fun birthday, Tom! We went to a wedding on Saturday and out for dinner for Father’s Day on Sunday.
Very nice! I think we were extra crowded because of FIFA. Can’t imaging what it will be like when the Olympics are here.
Weekend was pleasant but nothing to write about. The weather was very nice for a few days – great with little humidity which is starting to come back today. Enjoying my Jo Malone Jasmine Sambac & Marigold. Those two notes are great together. I tried some samples I had. All “no”. Haven’t decided about Parfum d’Empire Un Bel Amour d’Ete yet. Doing a lot of fun reading.
Humidity is the bane for me. Chased me right out of the East and landed me at the edge of the desert. Where I like it.
Big ditto on the humidity and Cali’s lack of it. When I came here to KC, I thought – great, no humidity. Wrong! lol. No regrets though. A move for me was long overdue.
Yeah, it’s the pits. I might still be back there save for that..
Glad you had a moderately enjoyable birthday. Sad the cake wasn’t up to scratch.
I’m currently sat in a house full of fans despite which it is still 30c (80f). Humidity has come down from a high of 88% overnight. Now it’s just 50% but will rise again this evening.
I kind of figured that the cake was $6 so it couldn’t be that good. I was just proved right. No biggie.
Happy after birthday. I think you should get another, better cake and that bottle of Gardenia.
I actually can’t recall much about the weekend, which worries me. Anxiety about our current heatwave?
I am trying to be good about the cake. If it’s not excellent it’s not worth it (for me, and at the moment. 5 minutes from now..)
Heya Tom, glad you enjoyed your birthday.
This weekend was lightly social. Saturday had Kath over for lunch, then in the evening Michael and Hyun brought their rescue pug Pancake over to meet the hounds and we fed the humans Jin’s famous Korean BarBQ. It was a belated birthday event for Hyun.
Sunday TinaG came over for lunch, tea and perfume sniffing. In the evening I hosted Trivia.
Very chill,
Portia xx
That reads like a perfect weekend..
Happy birthday! Oh you KNOW how much I love the Mapp & Lucia books. I finally bought myself a fancy matched set of them. I puttered in the garden in the early am before it got wretchedly hot, then did a fair amount of reading. I always have 2 – 3 books going at once. They’re saying rain later this week and I am hoping that is true!
A good book, a rainstorm, and a fireplace. Heaven.
