I’m firing my scheduler!

Oh, wait, that would be me!  I’m not sure what is going on in captioning world, but I am just buried in work, and people need help and I keep saying yes, and it is just… this week has been the worst, I think. Today is an up at 5a and finish at 11p day, then get back up at 5a tomorrow to do this thing coming out of Lisbon I’ve been doing all week.

As a sad, sad consequence, I was thinking I would get something written today, but that is just not happening.  Oh, and Cora (the oldest Frenchie I have, who is just 4!) is off her feed today and feeling a bit puny, not sure what is going on with her.

Next week is looking a wee bit better, and the week of Thanksgiving everyone doing remote meetings and conferences is doing something else!

We’ll talk about that new Strangers thing that is coffee and booze and.. yikes!  It scared me just reading about it. 🙂

So for the Thanksgiving Day people, what are you doing this Thanksgiving Day, have you figure it out?  I’m doing nothing. Mom is doing great, pretty much back to normal. She wakes up in the middle of the night hungry and goes and gets a snack (I had to send her that fully cooked bacon Sam’s has that she loves), has put back on most of the weight she lost. But I’m not going to visit then, I think the boys are heading to Denver to see their dad and other brothers.  So I’m going to kind of do nothing that week and just rest and sleep and make a big pot of chicken and noodles, I think.  Maybe lasagna. Maybe I’ll just order Chinese.

You?

  • HeidiC says:

Oh, poor Cora! Hope she’s feeling less puny now. We were going to get together with family, but we all decided that wasn’t going to happen — Minnesota is blowing up and locking down. Funny thing is, we (me, DH, & kiddo) don’t really like much T’giving food beyond mashed potatoes & gravy, but we always go along because TRADITION. So since we’re relieved of that, we’re still planning a small feast, but of foods we all really like!

  • Maggiecat says:

Also overworked here, teaching 6 college classes online, but not quite as bad as you are it seems! For Thanksgiving, hubby and I will do a small turkey (smoked, already cooked), veggies, pie, and watch football. I’ll have grading and emails, but it’s been a bruising semester and some rest and relaxation is definitely being planned.

  • Portia says:

We don’t do Thanksgiving here in Australia. For that I am truly and eternally thankful.
Jin and I celebrated 9 years yesterday by going to a city hotel and watching the harbour from our room. We had Room Service and watched the football.

Happy to hear that your mom is getting better. I have no real plans for Thanksgiving this year. With Covid and my grandmother passing, things are up in the air right now in regards to holidays.

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

Glad to hear your mom is improving. I’d be all about Chinese food, maybe a couple of those combo meals and make a feast of it! Leftovers are always tasty, too.

  • Dina C. says:

So glad to hear the good report on your mom Patty. My family will expect me to whip up the traditional T-day feast. It’ll be the four of us plus daughter’s boyfriend. The leftovers are the best part. Love a turkey salad sandwich!

  • Jennifer S says:

Glad to hear your Mom is better!
Thanksgiving has been a low key event for some years now and while I miss the company I don’t miss all the stress that went with it. I actually kinda wouldn’t mind not cooking at all ( insert will the grown children always depend on someone else making the turkey even when I’m not around anymore? Just sayin ) but the kids would be sad at losing that traditional feast. Pffttt.
I do love the smells and the leftovers myself so….okay. I’ll be cookin’ again this year!

    • Patty says:

I don’t cook for holidays anymore, having for a long time, and now I refuse to go anywhere where there will be more than five people. Just do not like that at all. It’s too noisy and too something. I do like the smells, though!

  • Cinnamon says:

Hmm… is Cora yearning for change? Maybe plain chicken and rice for a couple of days will have her back on the straight and narrow.

We don’t really have Thanksgiving here, but my son, on a NY trip, once had a hot open turkey sandwich with all the trimmings at a diner and that was it. That’s what he does himself at uni and what we’ll do this year with him being home. I have to remember to get the makings at the local farm shop…

    • Patty says:

She seems to be okay today. She was in some kind of pain, so I always have gabapentin around and rimadyl. Four dogs, you have to have that and steroids, especially with Frenchies and, oh, yeah, Amantadine, just for added whatever if someone is tweaky. so I gave her a gaba 2x, and today she seems perfectly fine. I started keeping rimadyl around because if Anya looks stiff, I give that to her to help any inflammation that might be building, hopefully heading off another major episode that will paralyze her again temporarily or permanently. She’s a worrisome dog, but I love her and all of them to distraction.
That open face turkey sandwich sounds amazing, I might do that instead!

  • Musette says:

I love the smells and tastes of Tday chow, so I’ll make a small turkey breast with the mashed potatoes, green beans and GRAAAVY! For me, it’s about the food, not the folks (never been a fan of indoor gatherings, since A Lot of People Around the Table can be either delightful… or a recipe for stress (the cubs ALWAYS brought stress ) – so I’m looking forward to a peaceful dinner. Funny… I can always make a turkey breast/potatoes, etc – why do I wait ONLY for that particular day??? hmmm… xoxoxo

    • Musette says:

and tell Cora to CUT IT OUT and get with the program. Enough with the puny-feelin’ hounds! 😉 (and a big hug and smooch to her ) xoxoxo

    • Patty says:

That sounds really good. I may do a ham instead, but I do like turkey one day a year and pumpkin pie, too. I really hate big holiday gatherings. I never realized that until a few years ago when the kids were grown and spent them at their dad’s and I was by myself going, yes!!!! I just pretty much hate the whole manufactured thing. I love Christmas and going to mass and doing the religious part of it, that works great, but I am just refusing to do anything I don’t want to do for holidays anymore, especially cooking. I might just make a grilled cheese sandwich. 🙂

  • March says:

Ugh that sounds like a dreadful week and I’m sending a virtual smooch to Cora. I’m so glad I don’t have any complicated family dynamic to navigate for Thanksgiving. It’s me and the boys, their sister comes over (she lives alone, wears a mask etc.) and we are having our usual holiday festivities, which for us is …. putting up the Christmas tree!!! LOL It’s a fake one, otherwise we couldn’t, but we started doing that a few years ago and it stuck. We play games and watch trash on TV and the food is simple, we just get a bunch of the Trader Joe’s goodies like you’d have at a cocktail party, whatever they want, and have an all-day buffet. This year she’s bringing some amazing pumpkin pie she had, the lady makes it with puff pastry crust. SIGN ME UP

    • Musette says:

that always sounds like so much fun, March! Have a wonderful time! xoxox

    • Patty says:

This sounds SO great! I have my tree up already. Honestly, I never took it down. I took all the decorations off and I turned off the lights, but I turned the lights back on a couple of weeks ago, and I’m getting all the decorations out on Thanksgiving! I want a Trade Joe’s here! I think there may be one in Kansas City, I may need to drive down there for a quick shopping trip. Cora is better today! I think she just tweaked a hip or something, maybe her foot, but she’s all better today and eating and moving normally!

  • Ariel says:

Heck yes to your mom feeling better. Bacon as medicine sounds like a dream prescription.

I know the “yes” problem. Far too well. Firing your scheduler just means you have to say no to everything until you hire a new one, right?

No plans for Thanksgiving, currently. Hoping to persuade my grandparents to dine with me outdoors (I got heaters! and hot water bottles!) rather than go indoors to my dad’s place (which, among other Covid risks, will have a returning college student, eek)– but not pushing and haven’t heard back. I know better than to tell my family what to do– but sometimes it is hard as the only medical professional in the family tree. Cada macaco no seu galho.

    • Maya says:

Thought your last line was Portuguese…. I love it! So so so true! 🙂

    • Patty says:

I agree about the Bacon! Everything seems better with that! yeah, it is a tricky time. I miss my mom so much. I did get to see her this summer when things were pretty low key on the Covid front here. I think she’ll be able to come down for Christmas and stay until the New year, I HOPE! None of us go anywhere, and she’s already had it, so her antibodies should be good at least for the next couple of months anyway.

  • Tara C says:

Glad to hear your mom is better! Healing vibes for Cora. I’m intrigued by your job, you do closed captioning? I would love to find a job like that I could do from home.

As for Thanksgiving we are doing nothing as well. Lasagna sounds good. 🙂

    • March says:

She does, and it is FASCINATING, I love to talk to her about it. (Ok I’m not sure how fascinating SHE finds it at this point, but it is!)

      • Patty says:

I actually love my job now that I haven’t done a newscast in like five months. I did a brief stint back in news right when the pandemic started as all my lovely, lovely stadium stuff disappeared poof! But haven’t done a news anything since probably April, thank God! I hate news.

    • Patty says:

Yeah! I used to be a court reporter about a thousand years ago, hated working with attorneys, married one, then hated them more – divorced the husband attorney and my working with attorneys job. Then I heard about captioning, so I could repurpose the skill using my machine steno skills for doing live captioning. Did news forever, then did a lot of management stuff as that company grew into a monster. Hated the management stuff, finally was done with that 4 years ago? Back to captioning as an IC. I’ve gotten to listen in on the coolest things. In January of this year, I got to caption the largest live event held in the world on New Year’s Day at MetLife Stadium, the 13th Siyum HaShas https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/security-tight-as-jews-gather-at-nj-stadium-for-religious-event/2253330/.
92,000 people there and I don’t know how many at Barclay Center. They took my English captions and turned them into Yiddish. It was pretty cool. Someone got a picture for me of my captions going up on a big screen in Yiddish during prayers. I do a ton of stadium stuff – or did! I’m wanting events to start again one day because that’s my fave! Did a ton of Monster Truck events, Korean boy band concerts, Motocross, hockey, basketball. Now I’m just doing an unending stream of meetings on Zoom and WebEx – govt meetings, conferences, conventions. They are just running into a blur of Zoomtime. I really need a big stadium event like the one I started this year with again. Usually I get my May-June graduation happiness, but nope, none of that this year. Joyless.

But you could train to do it, it just takes a while. I do it by steno, but people have been training now to do it by voice – repeating what is said.

I love the job, it pays ridiculously well, there is just so much work right now, and so much is not getting covered because there are just not enough trained captions to cover it. I turn down so much because I can only do one thing at a time.

      • Ariel says:

Want. This sounds like my jam. – emotionally-exhausted SLP.

      • Tara C says:

Wow, the Siyum ha Shas, I watched part of that, super cool! I unfortunately don’t have any steno experience. But it sounds like an interesting job (except for news, which I also hate).
