Really not much

It was a busy week, but somehow I lacked inspiration. Sometimes being really busy does that – you just go from one thing to the next and nothing sticks.  Much got done but I reached the weekend wanting something to pop. Alas, no.

On Saturday, after Chris the DIY guy delivered the refurbed bench (see pic), I’d accompanied the dog into the world, I’d done part of an editing job (around every eight weeks, I find myself with some weekend work – I don’t love doing it, but as a friend says, TOTM [think of the money]), and I’d proofed an essay for my son, I needed to do something … something different.

So, I took myself for a walk to the small ‘town’ a couple of miles away. Surprisingly, given the weather is improving, the coastal path wasn’t busy. I had no real plan. So, I walked to town, went down a quiet road to the estuary, walked along what’s called the Goat Path by the estuary’s edge (see pic – it’s the elevated concrete path on the left and its low tide, and no, I don’t know why it’s called the Goat Path) into Topsham.

Once there I realised that everything closes by 4 on Saturdays so there were only windows to look in.

I then cut into the village, passing the outdoor pool (which had a sign up stating it will be opening soon – to my joy, as it means I can join the Nutters, the early morning swim club, after I’ve had my second Covid jab), and worked my way towards the farm shop, which was the only busy place.

From there, I walked home via the ‘secret’ path (it runs off the coastal path, up a hill past several new builds, and then you can turn on to a track which leads to the main road and, after a bit, home). Unless you’ve lived round here for more than 10 years it’s not apparent it goes anywhere other than up a hill.

By the time I made it home (after about two hours) I was exhausted. But I came home to find a small parcel, which included a travel size of Malle’s Carnal Flower (yes, I finally caved) waiting by the door (the other item in the parcel was The Ordinary concealer – I picked badly regarding colour from the online system so this will go to a friend).

I sprayed Carnal Flower on before bed — a bit of a contrast to the soothing lavender-esq things I use to ease into sleep – and was reminded of how complex and beautiful it is. Warm, lush, green – it’s a wonderful iteration of tuberose (which I’m trying again this year to grow). Notes include bergamot, melon, camphor (not to the extent of SL Tubureuse Criminelle), tuberose, ylang, orange blossom, coconut and white musk. I especially enjoy the warm/cool green opening. When I lived in London there was a flower stand in Covent Garden which almost always had tuberoses (which, of course, I’d buy) and the house would be perfumed for a week or so.

See what I mean? No oomph. Nothing head-turning. No formal idea or event to stick a post on. Just. Stuff. It’s almost April. Here’s to warmer weather inspiration.

So, anything inspired you recently? If you’re a tuberose lover is CF on your list?

    Cinnamon,
The bench turned out lovely, and the garden is really shaping up well. Hardscaping is all in place now? I love your goat path. We have a well-paved path in the woods next to a creek behind our housing development, and it’s a wonderful place to walk the dog in all seasons of the year except when there is heavy rain. (It floods.) I love the smell of tuberose. I have smelled CF in the past, though I don’t own any right now. It’s a winner!

    • Cinnamon says:

Thank you. Things are coming along. I think he did do a wonderful job on the bench. I’m waiting for some more ground cover which will grow over and through the path. The crazy paving terrace isn’t really to my liking but it’s solid so it stays.

What a lovely trip through your day and your village. I do hope you keep posting progress on your garden. Mine’s all gone to seed and I really enjoy looking at yours!

    • Cinnamon says:

Thank you. I find moving a lot right now keeps me on even keel. Best wishes with your garden. Is it doing the equivalent of raising it’s hand and going ‘me me’?

  • Musette says:

the camphor in Carnal Flower is mah JAM! It’s my absolute favorite tuberose (TubeCrim is 2nd). Your weekend walk sounds lovely!

    xoxoxo

    • Cinnamon says:

Hmmm, I get more camphor at the beginning of TB. Carnal Flower is more balanced (whatever than really means — to my nose it’s more balanced). I sort of overdid the walk but it was better for it — I felt like I’d really ‘done’ something.

  • Portia says:

    Hey Cinnamon,
LOVE that you went wandering around the closed town on Sunday afternoon. It sounds so relaxing and good exercise as well.
Carnal Flower is amazing but my big tuberose loves are Versace Blonde, Tubereuse Couture by Parfumerie Generale and L’Artisan La Chasse aux Papillons

    • Cinnamon says:

Well, the wandering will be curtailed now that things are opening up (slowly) here. It was very relaxing. Have never sampled Versace Blonde. Strangely, La Chasse is wan on me but this happens with some l’Artisan florals.

  • Tara C says:

I’m looking forward to wearing CF again soon. I wore Tubéreuse Criminelle last week and Amouage Love Tuberose should be showing up this week in the mail. Today it’s going to be orange blossom and neroli though, with Memo Sintra.

I still metaphorically kick myself that I didn’t buy TC when it was in the SL export line. Or even when it was a bell jar and ‘only’ cost 120 euros. Sigh.

      • Tara C says:

I remember trying TC for the first time at the Palais Royal in Paris. The opening was such a shocker I told the shop assistant I needed to sit outside for a while to consider it. I ended up going back and buying the bell jar… for 90€. Those were the days!
