Landscaping and Summer/Beach Perfumes

Finally!  It feels like spring is here and summer close on its heels. We turned on the pool heater now that we are steadily in the 70s and 80s, we’ve been in it!

I’m still assessing the winter damage for some plants.  One near my house in front did not make it. I kept waiting and pruning it back, but it’s clear now it is deader than a doornail so need to finish remove it once it was clear that the more aggressive pruning was just showing complete dead branches.  Super sad.

The other side of the house, I’m not sure what it is called, but it is great in the summer and fall.  It looooooks like there is new growth, though much of it looks pretty dead. Not sure how much it will come back, but something is trying to live – I’m going to remain hopeful for another 3 weeks.

That frigid cold 4-6 weeks ago was brutal on growing things. I’ve got an elderberry bush that is still not sure it wants to live.

The weeds, though,  are just going to town – like that cold was a bonus! So much rain, I have had to do an early run through the jungle to keep some of the craziest wild at bay. I did decide I need to hire someone to help with this.

The planters around the deck project continues.  I think I have like 12 planters now, the dirt has been delivered from the local greenhouse (Coco Loco, I really love the coco coir based dirt). I’ve been stressing on whether to go seeds in there as much as possible or get new plants.  Budget is screeching about what I’d need to spend for that many baby plants, so I figured out a plan to protect the seeds from the birds and squirrels – netting!  Fill the boxes, plant the seeds, put the netting over the top of it with some room, until the plants start growing.  I even had squirrels go dig up two freshly planted hibiscus. WTH?

Finally had a hummingbird show up last night. Why is the sight of the first one in April so joyous?  I was working at the time and saw the little ruby throated devil out the window and just squealed in joy.

Besides landscaping, birds and work, I’ve become obsessed with beach and summer perfumes. I’ve found a couple of articles that were listing things I had not heard of.  Don’t even want the expensive stuff, those cheapies are great. Like that Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Crush body fragrance mist.  That is so fleeting, but it stays in your hair and in your clothes in just the right amount for this time of year, and I’m more than a little obsessed with it!  Found a couple of other things at Urban Outfitters – their hair and body mist – Sel Ocean and Lait de Coco.  I know longevity is their biggest criticism, but in the summer, when it turns warm out, I want sunny smelling things that are barely there.

What summer/beachy fragrances do you love?  I still love the standards – Bobbi Brown Beach, CB At The Beach and Mr. Hulot, etc., but always looking for the perfect thing.

I think Heeley’s perfumes are perfect beach scents: Sel Marine, Oranges and Lemons…, Hippie Rose. They are light, fresh and melancholic in a good way.
The Brazilian Crush body and hair mist was recommended to me already and it could be found in several shops last summer but since then it’s gone. Maybe they will bring it back again now that the summer season is coming…

i have an old (very old!) Estee Lauder – Azuree Soleil that I got at a perfume swap with March! Somewhere in Virginia, eons ago. It smells fantastic.

    • Patty says:

Oh, yeah, I think that was my gateway drug into beach fragrances, I loved that suntan lotion and just swooned when that arrived on the scene. It is perfect!

  • Musette says:

oh, my little honeydoodle! Dead Plants Suck. But! It’s part and parcel of gardening, alas. I wait quite awhile before calling it in because sometimes they pull back from the brink.
My neighbor said her neighbor saw a hummer earlier this week, so out went the feeders this morning. These aren’t ‘my’ birds, of course, but I’m on their trapline and they expect their chow.

Beach! I love Mr Hulot’s, with that salty tang… Bobbie Brown Beach, of course… and my old standby, Coty Sand and Sable. There’s also that Ambergris that reminds me of Brittany.

    xoxoxo

    • Patty says:

Well, I’m switching my hummer feeding stations, as well as the orioles. Not sure why I had them in the front yard. I have a lot of great flowers they love, especially that monstrous weeping cherry with all the blossoms and berries, but these guys are more shy, especially the orioles, so I’ve move move feeders into the back. I had a big old red headed woodpecker attacking my feeder this morning, it was awesome!

I’ve never been a fan of the ‘sunscreen’ vibe fragrances. For summer, I limit my fragrances to light tea, citrus, fig, and coconut themes.

    • Patty says:

But I think of those a beachy/summery. My all time fave summer fragrans is Hermes Osmanthe Yunnan. I just drown myself in it. And a great fig is perfect all spring and summer, along with MPG Bahiania and some other pineappley coconut things. so yeah, I toss those into beach fragrances!

I enjoy no 19 edp during the summer. Is it beachy? Nope, but when it’s 90 degrees out, it hits the spot. I love Worth Courtesan during the summer. Used to be able to find it at a reasonable price but can’t find it anywhere. Don’t know if Courtesan was discontinued or not.

    • Patty says:

I adore Worth Courtesan, I blame March. And I’m looking for it too, and so sad it’s not anywhere. Am hoping it is a supply problem and will show up again, but I fear others did not love it the way they should have

Exciting to hear about your gardening adventures and plans. We have a new backyard, put in sod and sprinklers last fall, and now planting trees and bushes. A work in progress. We put out the hummingbird feeder this week and hope to attract birds now that we are getting trees. The first hummingbird sighting is true joy!
I’m not one for beachy scents, but I adore Aqua Allegorias: Vanille & Ylang (snap Portia!)

    • Patty says:

How exciting! I love doing landscaping. So much work, but so, so satisfying as you see things take root and grow and become beautiful! Agree on the AAs, they are just easy to love, I think all of them are. I see two new ones just released for the summer

  • March says:

Ooooh, what a fun post! I’m so excited to hear everything that’s happening in your yard and all your plant-plans!

I always keep a bottle of cheesy tanning oil around (like Hawaiian tropic) just cuz I love the smell, even though I’m wearing it over SPF50 sunscreen. Or I use it on my legs after a shower. It reminds me of our many years of summer at the pool with the kids (just needs a whiff of chlorine lol), makes me happy.

    • Patty says:

I still have that crap that is orange, the orange soleil gelee thing, love that smell! I can’t wait until you move and get a place and start readjusting to high desert gardening!

  • Cinnamon says:

The hummingbird sighting is so exciting. Summer scents … well, pretty much other season scents, as our summer can be really variable (last year we were lucky and had a proper summer). At the moment Mother Nature is feeling twitchy and we’ve moved back to early March weather. She keeps promising. Sigh.

    • Patty says:

I get even more excited when i see my first Oriole. Not sure why. They are shyer and seem harder to lure in, even though they can never ignore the oranges and jelly, just tough to catch them feeding! Sorry about the weather, hopefully it will smooth out and warm soon!

  • Portia says:

    Hey Patty,
LOVING the roundup of your garden adventures. How exciting to have those new canvases of planter pots to get springing on. You throwing in some petunias? My absolute favourite summer annual.
I crave beachy scents sometimes too. Bronze Goddess, Aqua Allegorias: Vanille & Ylang, Lys Soleia and Tiare Mimosa, Terracotta Le Parfum, Un Jour d’Ete and many others I can’t think of right now come out to play. YUMMERS!
    Portia xx

    • Musette says:

I keep meaning to try Bronze Goddess! xoxox

    • Patty says:

Yes! Salvia, petunias, johnny jump-ups, all kinds of things. I love coleus too for the color. It’s going to be fun to play with each planter box and do a different theme, but have some elements pull across.

Have you smelled the two new AAs? forget the names, just saw them on Saks website. It’s the time for them to launch their summer ones. I do love a great AA, they are perfect for summer!

  • Tara C says:

My summer scents are Bulgari Au Thé Bleu, Guérlain Terracotta, Creed Virgin Island Water and Atélier Cologne Blanche Immortelle.

    • Patty says:

Oh, good choices. Is Terracotta still around? I was thinking it vamoosed, but guess not. I really love that on along with all the Bulgari The’s and VIW. I need to resniff that Kilian Roses on Ice, it could work for a summer fragrance too, I’m thinking.
