To quote that famous line from Alfred, Lord Tennyson, “in the Spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.” As a not so young woman, my thoughts of love are currently directed at my garden – what’s worked, what hasn’t, what it needs more (or less) of in terms of perennials, are we truly past the last frost, how to discourage the trash pandas from flipping over the plantings in that one particular spot looking for grubs, etc.
The irises are blooming like mad all over town. I stick my nose in them at each and every opportunity, occasionally startling a bee … that glorious scent. Today however I will not be hammering on about how iris perfumes (which are made from orris butter, from the rhizomes) don’t really smell like the flower’s scent to me, although I like iris fragrances. Why does iris seem like the focus of whatever fragrance it’s in, rather than in a supporting/background role? Am I wrong?
Anyway, today my fancy lightly turns to a ramble in the brambles, dare I say currant (hah!) affairs, with thoughts of jammy fruits – the very limited period of time when I wake up in the morning and go, hey, today’s a perfect day for L’Artisan’s Mure et Musc! (Do fragrance muggles have these thoughts? Probably not.)
You’d think with all the “fruity florals” out there we’d all be fruit lovers, but for many of us, not so. Too pedestrian, too lamestream. BUT. Right now I’m wanting (from my limited repertoire of fruity-jammy-berry things) Mure et Musc, maybe some Ines de la Fressange, whatever else slightly tart / jammy I can dig up. That Snif croissant one comes to mind as well, with its dab of blackcurrant jam; perfect this time of year.
Carolyn and I saw The Devil Wears Prada 2, a delightful (if somewhat bittersweet) sequel, twenty years on, when fashion mags are circling the drain alongside traditional journalism. But the clothes! The fashion of it! All the surprise cameos! Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci and Anne Hathaway looking stunning, etc. There’s a Dior focus (movie Emily works for Dior) and it got me thinking about this gorgeous new bottle, Miss Dior Essence, nose is Francis Kurkdjian. Also we busted out Carolyn’s vintage bottle of Miss Dior. Am I babbling? I said it was a ramble! (Fun fact: Stanley Tucci is married to Emily Blunt’s sister.)
I’ve always found the Miss Dior houndstooth bottles stunning, but the vintage fragrance was too galbanum-forward for me; the current iteration has had its claws trimmed and its teeth pulled and bears little to no resemblance to the original. Essence brings back that houndstooth in embossed glass plus a berry tinted juice. No seriously, is this not gorgeous? Notes are blackberry, jasmine, elderflower, oakwood; released in 2025, Francis Kurkdjian is the nose.
How is it? Well….. yikes. It’s weird – so weird that Carolyn and I spent the rest of the day trying to parse what, exactly, is “wrong” with it. There’s this … off-putting note. This note that neither of us likes. It’s omnipresent and (to me) sort of varnish-y, or like acetone. Looking at those notes listed, we have no idea (edit: Carolyn thinks it’s the elderflower). Anyway, a real-life demonstration of try before you buy – I really liked it on the magazine scent strip! I still think it’s gorgeous to look at, but I prefer the current Miss Dior which has the same inoffensive masstige prettiness of Coco Mad. I mean, you could do worse.
Any fruity-jammy favorites in your collection? If so, are they mentally assigned to a particular time of year for you?

Sorry to come back for a second round March.
I never bought it but thought if that was my thing I’d be happy as a pig in chiffon: DIOR Rouge trafalgar. All the berries, juicy and not too sweet. Elegant berries and other fruits playing backup.
Sarah McCartney does excellent fruities. From Tokyo’s Spring Blossom with its toast & raspberry jam, through Rosa Ribes, the blackcurrant rose Sarah originally made for herself, to Babylon Sunset, a whole summer pudding worth of fruit. None are particularly sweet.
My most favourite? Queen from Eau de Bougie. Perfect for any time of year. I smell a tart, upmarket, fruity rose with dark berries eaten from the bush
I love all things citrus, but that’s the extent of my fruity collection. I like the way berries of all kinds smell, but I don’t want to smell like like berries, if that makes sense. Never say never though….
Huh. I. Wuz. FIRST! ( and the site ate it!!)
Team Ines here- but only my beloved Alberto Morillas’s version ( the Becker version is too dry)
I have to recommend DSH Perfumes Muresque. It’s berries and leaves and branches and truly beautiful. It’s also one of her Heirloom Elixir limited editions so I’m not sure that you can just buy it alone anymore, but it is available in a collection. Worth trying if sampling is possible (get thee to Boulder, CO to her studio??).

I loved Mure et Musc! I bought it at Saks a lifetime ago and I think that l”Artisan was just becoming a thing. The saleslady sold me on layering it with another l”Artisan.. but I can’t think of which one! I loved it and the combo too
Oh, let me know if you remember what you layered it with — I know that was A Thing and I can’t remember either!
La Chasse aux Papillons! I think..
Oh, boy, did I love Mure et Musc back in the day. Then, it stopped loving me. Went through my stuff and don’t have that kind of fruity etc any more.
I remember trying Miss Dior Cherie ages ago when it was still called that and really liking it. No idea why I didn’t end up with a bottle. The mistakes we make …
Am planning on seeing TDWP2 soon.
I wonder if I need Cherie … I’d have to figure out options. I hope you enjoy the movie.
Well if you consider citrus fruity then..
I know, I know. I love the cherries in SL Rahat, and I love the hazelnut in Aomassai, and there a couple of coffee ones that I can’t think of. Otherwise not so much.
Miss Dior will always meant to me the old stuff my mom wore.
Hehe well your mom had great taste! Someday I might come around to galbanum in large doses, but that hasn’t happened yet. And I love Rahat — but not right now!
I don’t have much in the way of mainly fruity perfumes. I have been wearing Jul et Mad Stilettos on Lex lately which has some fruity top notes. It’s great in the current nice warm weather.
My plants are indoor now. My streptocarpus have started blossoming and should continue until winter. I’m loving these plants. They are so pretty and every blossom lasts weeks.
I reeeaaaallllly need to add some streptocarpus to my wishlist — I’m constantly culling and replacing, we have a local plant group swap meet every month which is loads of fun.
What a gorgeous bottle is Miss Dior Essence! How sad that the pretty berry-colored juice doesn’t smell pretty! The discontinued Gucci edp II was a great berry scent. I completely used up my bottle, and bottles on ebay are now going for hundreds. My favorite fruity scents are the citruses with a couple figgy ones thrown in.
I KNOW — I was totally ready in that weird, random way to splash out on that bottle. I am glad I did not. Gucci EDP II I don’t remember! I wish things we love would stick around.
LOVE a fig. Completely forgot about them as a berry DinaC.
Heya March.
I can’t think of one berry forward perfume in my collection. I’m sure there are some but I hardly wish for that to be my daily scent profile.
There is Stash Unspoken (Pink pepper, Quince), Burberry Brit W (Pear), Pluie de Soleil (peach, strawberry, pineapple) are my only super fruities that come to mind.
Interesting you say that about iris, maybe you are hypernosmic to it? There are plenty of iris perfumes I find it plays nicely as support. Most of the floral chypres.
Portia xx
The only vaguely berry think I had (other than a L’Artisan thing I had a beensy thing of in the 2000’s and never replaced is..
CB I Hate Perfume Musk Reinvention. Naughty little berries doing naughty little things. I’m on my second bottle.
Oh lord I love that CB musk. I think you and I bonded over that at one point.
Oh boy, you and March got me interested in Musk Reinvention. I checked it out and read comments about how awful it is. Now I’m in that state of – it’s awful? really really seriously awful………..I MUST try it! lol. I won’t go out of my way to find it, but if I do and it jumps into my cart, well then, I have to get it.
See, I am an idiot! You’re right, lots of floral chypres with iris as the supporting note. I really need to try Stash Unspoken, it keeps winding up on my list and then I forget about it 😀
Stash Unspoken is a lovely, nearly nothing that smells nice. It wears softly but prettily and has a moderate story development. Though I’m fully aware it’s nothing groundbreaking or special it gets quite a bit a wear around here. An easy breezy spritz and go. I particularly like that it occupies none of my attention till I sniff for it and then it is softly there.
