Dolce & Gabbana D&G Anthology

D&G AnthologyHow do I know I´m getting old?  I don´t recognize half the celebrity faces on the new Dolce & Gabbana D&G Anthology line of five fragrances.

Le Bateleur 1 (Tyson Ballou) – aromatic and aquatic notes, cedar, vetiver, and kill.me.now.   If you menfolken would like to freak out everyone around you with the mother lode of fresh aquatics, featuring a mouth-puckering sour musky finish, here´s your scent.  On second thought, put the bottle down and back away slowly.

L´Imperatrice 3 (Naomi Campbell) – watermelon, kiwi, pink cyclamen, musk.  Smells like teen spirit and Runts.  The teen girls liked this but said they couldn´t imagine a grownup wearing it.

L´Amoureaux 6 (Noah Mills) – spices, juniper berries, bergamot, pink pepper, cardamom, birch leaf, iris root, wood and musk.  Your standard-issue woody guy fragrance.  I love a woody guy as much as the rest of you, but … eh.

La Roue de la Fortune 10 (Eva Herzigova and Fernando Fernandes) –  tuberose, gardenia, jasmine, benzoin and patchouli.  As bona fide a “chypre floral” as Coco Mad (heh, although Coco Mad´s grown on me as a fun, loud trashy scent).  I guess if you held a gun to my head… it feels thin, though.  And the drydown is a surprisingly bitter/sour unwashed laundry smell.

La Lune 18 (Claudia Schiffer)- lily, tuberose, sandalwood, musk, iris root and leather.  I like this one the best – big surprise, given the list of notes, eh?  Again, too thin, just like all the supermodels these days, but at least it has a nice juxtaposition of slightly gourmand sweetness and spicy suede duskiness.

All fragrances will be available in 100ml (3.4 oz) EdT bottles.  Here’s a link to Kevin’s review on NST for comparison purposes, I don’t think he’s rushing out to buy any of these either.

Okey dokey, peeps!  I´m off to the Great Wild Woods of Maine until next week (I am hoping the weather has improved.)  No cel or computer, Nava and Musette are covering my days.  Let´s open this thread up and I´ll read all the comments when I get back, I promise –

  • I have an open order at TPC, is there anything you wish I´d hurry up and review already?
  • What are you looking forward to, release-wise?
  • Has anyone else noticed how Gold Bond powder smells a little like Necco wafers, in particular the ones (clove? anise?) that smell like … well, Gold Bond powder?  Which is your favorite Necco, and what would the world be like without Necco?
  • Is there anything worse than Chocolate Axe?  How about strawberry-peanut butter M&Ms?  Where is the FDA when you need them to prevent crimes like this?  What about the Geneva Convention, for the love of Pete?
  • Why do we say “for the love of Pete?”  Or “Bob´s your uncle?”  Okay, maybe you don´t say these things, but I do.

Everyone: do me a favor and have a nice week, okay?   Smell good.

  • AlbertCAN says:

Thanks for the review. The faces fronting the new Dolce & Gabbana D&G Anthology are technically all models, nearly all of who have been modeling for at least a decade (the exceptions are Noah Mills and Fernando Fernandes). Tyson, Naomi and Claudia especially have been doing this since 1991 so I wouldn’t consider myself getting too old for this stuff…and while we are on this subject Hilary Rhoda, the face of Estee Lauder, and fellow top model Lara Stone are both size 4-6 so not all models are paper thin.

I am honestly not expecting much out of this line but it’s interesting to hear what you think.

I got . . . well, scolded is too strong, let’s say dissuaded when I was a kid when my mother discovered I was teaching all the neighborhood kids to play “holy communion” by blessing them and delicately laying a Necco wafer upon their tongues. Clove was my favorite, too.

    • Musette says:

OOh! we used to do that, too. We used Necco wafers and those little flying saucer thingies (you had to split them in half – they were more meltyonthetongue than Neccos, so they stood in better for the communion wafer)

      Clove-y ones, for sure.

Have a great and relaxing time, Marchissima!

      xoxoxo>-)

ps. these scents all sounded so out of my league that I can’t even comment on them. Gonna go spritz something vintage – the Casa Blanca lilies just opened up so my nose is jammed with that scent (Bear thought one of the dogs pooped in the house!LOL! let’s hear it for INDOLIC! Vintage Shalimar should be able to blast through the haze.

      • Joe says:

That’s hilarious! Indolic alright! Ooof… I’d almost (ALMOST) love to have a vase full of those babies.

  • pyramus says:

That chocolate Axe (Dark Temptation) could have been good, but it smells–yes, of course I tried it–like A*Men, if A*Men were cheap and rank and concocted by a nose who had either no skills or no budget or possibly both (I’ll be charitable and assume it was a budgetary thing, considering the cost of Axe). It will come as no surprise to anyone that it’s basically a low-budget men’s scent with a chocolate note dumped into it; it doesn’t smell composed, it smells like some vials crashed into one another at the perfumer’s organ.

Honeymooned in Maine 17 years ago, at Mount Desert Island/Acadia National Park. Hiked all over the place – it was lovely. So enjoy the time away with your family!

None of the D&G’s sound in the least interesting to me, but then I’m still exploring the classics and some niche beauties. That upcoming L’Artisan vanilla thing sounds reeeeaally nice, though; I’d love to smell that.

I have no opinion on Necco wafers – but my daughter leaves for band camp in a couple of weeks, and she’s been instructed to bring two big bottles of Gold Bond powder with her…

Chocolate Axe? Weird M&M’s? For the love of Mike, what’s the world coming to, bless their hearts?

  • Dleep says:

I love M&M’s but the strawberry peanut butter ones don’t even tempt me. I actually pre-ordered one of the new D&G scents (6) from the upcoming Nordstrom sale. The more I sniffed the sample the more I disliked it. I switched my order to Tom Ford’s Black Orchid which I have been wanting for a long time. I am so glad I did. I have only been to Ogunquit, Freeport, and York in the state of Maine and I absolutely love those towns. Have fun!

You have a great week, babe! I look forward to your return.

    Hugs!

  • Sweet Sue says:

    Have a great vacay, March.

  • karin says:

Welcome to Maine, March! Weather was fantastic this weekend – I think summer is finally here. Hoping the nice weather will continue for your vacation. Have a great one! Don’t have much to comment on your questions…but I remember years ago in CA, one of my co-worker – Leo – used to bring in Necco wafers all the time. Another friend (Cyndy) and I would always raid his drawers. When he was in college, Leo apparently used to live right across the street from the Necco factory, and loved the smell. He always had to have stock on hand. As a special treat, he would surprise us by hiding rolls of chocolate Neccos in our desks…so, I would have to say the chocolate is my favorite.

  • I would love for you to review to new Humiecki and Graefe scents as well as the new Montales please! 🙂

  • rosarita says:

Honestly, I’ve never cared much for Necco Wafers or D&G scents so I’ve nothing to add except have a wonderful time! 🙂

  • sara says:

Wow you are brave! Thanks for laying on the olfactory grenade for all of us! Have a wonderful vacation 🙂

  • Melissa says:

Chocolate Axe? As long as they’re at it, how about strawberry-peanut butter M&M Axe? Maybe one of these new celeb models could be the face of it. Or the body. As he beckons the reader from his bed of M&Ms.

  • Rappleyea says:

All I can say is you DESERVE a vacation (and probably the Congressional Medal of Honor) for smelling that dreck! I wouldn’t go near any of it without a gas mask. LOL!

Have a great time, and thanks for all you do. ~ Donna

    • Rappleyea says:

Forgot to say – Necco wafers! They take me back to my childhood. Loved em all except the anise/licorice ones! But the clovey ones were my favorites. And I had no idea there even were strawberry-peanut butter M&M’s! I live under a rock…

  • Joe says:

Hope you have/had an amazing vacation! I’ve never been to the Maine woods or coast — one reason I’d love to live on the east coast again is to be able to explore more of New England. Right now I’m really sad that I’m missing out on vacation week right now at the Jersey shore with my mom, brothers, grandmother, and extended family.

No hurry to see you review anything… everything newly reviewed is a revelation. Oh, and I’ve never eaten Necco wafers often enough to even remember what the various colors taste like. I’m not into hard, chalky candies. Look forward to welcoming you back.

  • tmp00 says:

My world would be very sad without NECCO wafers. Luckily there’s a place in Highland Park that has them, and other things that I adore. http://www.sodapopstop.com/

I’m far more likely to drive to Highland Park for NECCO wafers than even walk to the Beverly Center to smell these. And no, I don’t know who half these people are.
