Amouage Beloved Man Fragrance Review

You know, when I read Miss Musette’s perfume review on Amouage Beloved Man, what came to my mind was this…

amouage beloved man smelling

If Miss Musette were a male elk.  Click on her review of Amouage Beloved Man above to get all the back story and deets.

So having access to some male types, I spritzed on my grown sons and ordered demanded requested what they send me a one-paragraph review. What I got was a few random sentences that makes it clear that they did inherit perfume reviewing skilz from their mother.

“This is the scent of a man; it has a nice complexion of incense with tuxedo testosterone. I would imagine people like Morgan Freeman and Tom Hanks just naturally exude this scent.”

After noting to myself that I probably should let them view some old Cary Grant and Clark Gable movies so I can upgrade their idea of classy actors, I think they pretty much have it right. BTW, they both really loved it and said they’d wear it.  Given that I have a house full of fragrance and they both have only picked maybe three each (some the same) that they like and would wear, this is high praise.

It is classy and romantic and completely masculine. While I could wear Beloved Man, it just doesn’t feel quite right. Musette has it right – it belongs on a man.  For me, it would be this man —

amouage beloved man Ryan Gosling

Yeah, yeah, I know you Gosling Hatahs think he’s too skinny – and he is – but I still think there is something about him that just screams in a really loud, urgent whisper – Classy AND Hot Sex.

Amouage Beloved Man opens on a bright citrus incense woods, then deepens slowly into the saffron and geranium with some soft florals and musk.  I’m not that aware of the notes, it’s expertly blended, so I get them, but everything fits together in an interesting puzzle that’s complex but not overwrought.

As Musette noted, it won’t release until late February, but Amouage sent me a really generous sample size that  – of course! – we are going to get into some of you’s hands!  Giveaway time!  I’ve got enough to make like 15 spray samples, I think, small ones, like 1.5 or so mls.  You must comment to get an entry. Comment can be anything, of course, or you can tell me what famous person you think this might go instead of me and my son’s picks.  You can get additional entries through any of the other options below – tweeting, liking, etc.!  Entries close on 2/5/13.  Chicks, you want this as much as guys do, either for yourself or your favorite guy or two.

I got to try this at the store here in Dubai and I loved it on me but, I would definitely love to smell it on a man as well. And the fact that they are putting in a purple box makes me want it even more! I have to go with Matt Damon as the spokesman for it though, he is my secret boyfriend 🙂

  • Daniel says:

Unfortunately, I disagree with most, Amouage can and should be worn by younger men. My vote is for Joseph Leonard Gordon-Levitt.

  • alexander says:

I’m not sure who will be the perfect man to wear it,but I’m absolutesly sure that I NEED to try it on myself!!!!!

  • Jennifer says:

If it’s an Amouage then I want to sniff it -simple as that.Haven’t been to the movies much except for the Hobbit and most of them were rather ..um..HAIRY! and braided.
Sort of agree on the Harrison Ford , Ewan Mc Greggor, and Hugh Jackman,George Clooney and …………………..tired of typing .
Must say that personally I think that the 30 rock kid and Ryan Gosling just strike me as sweet kids and I’m only turning 34 this year. Either one would make a great Jimmy olson boy cub reporter. Emphasis on- Boy – so no Amouage Man Frags for them ’til they grow up.

  • Liz K says:

I have spent two whole days trying to come up with a classy celebrity that makes me drool and can not for the life of me come up with anyone current except maybe Jude Law who isn’t quite right for this one, so I will have to go with William Powell in about 1936. I have obviously been brainwashed by old Hollywood (see my life long crush on Fred Astaire) but they just don’t seem to have that kind of class anymore.

  • hajusuuri says:

    I’ll go with Harrison Ford!

  • Anthony says:

I’m very interested in trying this. I only know two other Amouage fragrances: Homage and Jubilation XXV and this sounds like a must sniff. Incidentally, I just watched the Gosling movie “Drive” recently… awesome! And yes, those pores, and all the rest, are smoking hot 🙂

  • Derek says:

An orris centered amouage is something i NEED to try!

  • Damir Gašljevi? says:

Previous review made ??me very interested about this fragrance. If it’s really so good, I’d like to see some man with life experience and without scandals.

  • d3m0lici0n says:

I’d say Daniel Craig as a very stylish guy. My favorite Amouage is Tribute and I’d love to try Beloved Man. I think this is my only chance to try it because of that price… Ouch to the wallet… Crossing fingers now.

  • Tony says:

I would say Hugh jackman 🙂 thanks

  • Hairstyles says:

    Nice post!..thanks for sharing 🙂

  • mim666 says:

Please count me in for the draw! I love Jubilation XXV but have not tried most recent releases, only read about them and longed, pined, perished… 🙂

Never got the Clooney love, and Firth doesn’t really do it for me either, though I agree they both wear suits well and that Gosling is hot. And classy, though I’m not sure how to define that and think it takes more than wearing a tux well.

I would put this scent on Ewan McGregor because he is all-around fabulous, along with men who have sexy amazing accents/voices (in addition to…all the rest): Liam Neeson (right on, ellenb!), Clive Owen (right on, like half of you!), Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chiwetel Ejiofor, seconding Musette’s Oded Fehr and Sean Bean I should really stop now instead of listing celebrities who’d smell great in Amouage and are easy on the eyes….

*cough*Togo Igawa Shahid Kapoor Javier Bardem Matt Bomer Hrithik Roshan Shahrukh Khan Kit Harington Takeshi Kaneshiro *cough*

    uh, please excuse me

  • Lean S says:

Would love to try this scent. Yes, I am a girl but I do enjoy trying male scents as well, and I thoroughly enjoy some of them. Thank you for this opportunity.

  • Matt says:

I need to try more Amouage fragrances for men! Here in Bordeaux, there’s only a tiny store where they only have a couple of the GORGEOUS feminines, but I think I might find something for me on the other side of the line!

Looking forward for further trips to Paris!

    Matt

  • ellenb says:

Ummm, Liam Neeson would be my first choice of chest to bury my face in, but since he’s not returning my calls, I would share this lovely sample with my husband. thanks for the drawing!

  • Civet says:

I’d love to try this. On Michael Fassbender’s chest, preferably.

  • Janet in California says:

Colin Firth gets my vote. Charming and talented. Tatum Channing too, but just because I would like to be able to be close enough to smell him!

  • AnnieA says:

Votes for Nathaniel Parker and Benedict Cumberbach…

  • Irina says:

    Johnny Depp?
    would love a small sample

  • Yin says:

Seconding Jon Hamm! And Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I’ve never really seen the appeal of George Clooney either! But he’s certainly more attractive now than he was 15 years ago.

  • TaffyJ says:

No, Ann, I haven’t seen “The Unusuals”. Hmmm….(trots over to international movie database for more Jeremy.)

  • sunnlitt says:

I, too, think that Ryan Gosling is great to look at. A little young, though. Sigh. They stay the same age and I keep getting a bit (just a bit!!) older.
I would love to smell it on my husband, since I am not going to get close enough to those pretty boys to smell it on them!!!
    Thanks for the fun giveaway.

  • fearsmice says:

Poor Pierce Brosnan! So forgotten… yet still so delicious-looking… Bet he’d smell delicious in this, too!

  • Tiara says:

At the risk of showing my age, I was thinking Gregory Peck but George Clooney would do just fine. I’d like to know what 3 scents Patty’s sons picked out of her huge collection.

  • SMY says:

I would live to try this. It sounds amazing! Please enter me in the draw.

  • Connie says:

    Classy and hot/sexy… Laurence Olivier?
Agree with Cary Grant, Paul Newman probably fits the bill (think Cat on a Hot Tin Roof).

  • I don’t have a guy to try it out on, but I think Jon Hamm would wear it well. Yum 🙂

  • susan says:

Hah, well, everyone loves this one already! And I only just tried Beloved Woman. I’m perpetually a year behind!

I don’t associate Ryan Gosling as a sexy Cary Grant-level actor… too hipster. But he’s hot though!

  • Lynne Marie says:

I’d be OK with Paul Gross walking into my boudoir wearing Beloved. That shy but devilish grin of his, the chiseled features, his ability to serenade me – swoon… Add to that his Canadian self-deprecating sense of humor and I’m in fantasy heaven…

  • FeralJasmine says:

I would just like to smell this on my husband…I don’t want anyone who comes with an entourage, even in fantasy! For that matter, I might dab it on myself first. I’ve just ordered my first Amouage Attar sample (the Homage) and am very excited about trying it, although I find it hard to imagine paying that kind of money for perfume. Does anyone else have any quick thoughts about Homage?

  • Rina says:

How about young James Spader, timeless Robert Downey Jr. and/or Jeremy Piven? I’m probably the 1% that doesn’t “get” the Clooney thing…I’d love to try this for me, it sounds divine, and I doubt it will make it to my neck of the OC…

  • Samantha L. says:

I’d like to smell this on my boyfriend…he maybe wouldn’t appreciate it, but it’s really for me anyway! If only I could get him to wear the bottle of Ormonde Man I bought him!

  • Amy Bella says:

It’s a good thing that I like to smell like a man… my guy “hates” perfume! I much prefer wearing Jubilation XXV over the women’s version.

Maybe I can get Viggo Mortenson to wear Beloved for me? 🙂

  • EileenS says:

Yeah, someone had to mention Hugh Jackman.. *sigh*.. I was planning to pretend I was above celebrity crushes, but there goes that theory! He has the right mix of hunk and class for me, plus he probably would smell delicious with or without Beloved on.

  • Stacey says:

I am definitely looking forward to trying this one, or at least smelling it on my guy. Good call ojaddicte…I will go with Michael Fassbender too.

  • eldarwen22 says:

Ryan Gosling, nope but there are a few others that I can name. Even though Beloved Man is for men, I’ll give it a shot.

  • shaney says:

I know you said it’s probably best kept for the dudes, but I reeeeeeeeeally want to try it: incense and musk? Yum! Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Merlin says:

Hi, I overlap quite a bit with Ninara Poll above: my votes also go to Hugh Jackman, Daniel Day-Lewis, and like her, Jeremy irons when he was younger!

  • Patty says:

Oh, yeah, that completely works. As does that kid that was on Third Rock from the Sun that I can never remember his name, but he grew up quite, um, nice.

  • Maureen says:

I love all of the guys mentioned, but there is something about Richard Gere that still gets me right , well, ya know. I thought Ryan Gosling was hot when he was really young and in a movie with Sandra Bullock, and then I just felt kinda creepy, because he is way too young for me. (and even though he is hot, I do not think he is right for 30 Shades Christian Grey) I loved Interlude Man, and would love to try Beloved Man, too. Thanks.

    • Ann says:

Maureen, thanks for mentioning Richard Gere. I’ve always liked him from way back in the “American Gigolo” and “An Officer and a Gentleman” days (when he carries Debra Winger out of that factory, oh my!!). But he really came back on my radar in “Shall We Dance?” with Susan Sarandon a few years ago. Talk about sweetly romantic!

  • Farawayspices says:

Wow, this sounds like something I love to smell…always trying to find that scent that just exudes naturally, musky (but not laundry) and alluring. I think I would need to smell it to name an actor, but it sounds like it should be worn by someone that possesses a natural masculine grace and quiet presence.

  • Dina C. says:

In addition to Colin Firth, let’s add another Mr. Darcy to the list: Matthew MacFadyen. He’s also got a dreamy voice and blue eyes. Thanks for entering me in the drawing, Patty. 🙂

  • Ines says:

For a perfume that isn’t yet released, it’s causing quite a stir. 🙂 Everybody wants to smell it (me included). 😉

  • Ann says:

Hi, Patty — fun post! Folks are mentioning some great guys, so I’ll add my two cents. May I suggest Harrison Ford? I know he’s getting up there a bit in age, but over his long career he’s shown himself to be charming and classy, from Han Solo of “Star Wars,” to honest cop in “Witness,” “Blade Runner,” and of course, his wonderful and witty roles as Indiana Jones. And so many more. Think he would smell marvelous in Beloved Man.

    • Musette says:

Nothing wrong with ‘getting up there’ Lord knows I am, so Ryan Gosling, cute as he is, sorta skeeves me out (me, not him. I feel like I’m messing with my neighbor’s 16yr old son). I like a slightly more seasoned man, meself and he’s got to have just a little bit of solidity to him…I could see Sean Bean in this. Oded Fehr. okay. I have to go lie down now.

  • solanace says:

Clooney. I was here trying to come up with something completly out of the box, but why bother? (The young Marlon Brando was hot, but not classy. Jeremy Irons and John Malkovitcjh are uber classy, but not really hot.) And I love the way Clooney wears a tux.

Can’t wait to try Beloved Man on my husband. I really like the feminin version, though I’d rather buy a bottle of Gold or Epic for myself.

  • london says:

Clooney too obvious? I just wish I could get my husband to consider wearing anything.

  • Nancysg says:

The current George Clooney-mature and handsome. Not the young cute version. I am hoping for s sample from Oman soon, but will shore up my chances for a sample by entering this wonderful draw.

  • rosarita says:

It’s early and I’m having a hard time concentrating on classy yet sexy. Let’s see, a classic choice is Gary Cooper. If you need proof, watch A Farewell to Arms with Claudette Colbert.

  • It’s really hard to match it to a celeb without smelling it first, but in terms of classy actors, I’m going to go with Gosling. Or Brad Pitt prior to him doing that Chanel commercial (now he seems GROSS to me!).

I lurve me some Beloved Woman, so I am really hoping to win this. Hands down, it’s the most exciting/complex perfume I’ve smelled. Too bad the other Amouage samples I received last week didn’t love me the way BW does.

  • poodle says:

Colin Firth is a delightful choice but if this really smells like it should be worn by a man then I’d like someone to give Alan Rickman a good spritz of it and tell him to come over and read me a story. Oh, that voice….

  • Ninara Poll says:

I’m going to have to fervently wish that Hugh Jackman would magically wander into a shower of this and then somehow appear on my doorstep. He can join Viggo, George, Daniel Day-Lewis, Colin Firth, Cary Grant, and a younger Jeremy Irons over in my parlor, all eagerly vying for my hand… and yes, I know I lead a rich and somewhat depraved fantasy life 🙂 (Oh, I forgot to work Raymond Watts into that suitors’ parlor… hmmm, I could keep adding to this list all morning… le sigh)

  • lucasai says:

I’m totally in, need to sample Beloved Man, still haven’t tried Beloved Woman, so what, I will eventually sample it in my another life 😀

  • Jackie b says:

    Ooh, yes George Clooney please!
Actually a man in a suit is generally quite desirable. And maybe wearing Beloved.

  • masha7 says:

My fave Amouage is still Epic, and second, Lyric, and I like the Opus collection, too. Since I’m surrounded by nothing but testosterone here, I’ve got plenty of cute guys to try Beloved on! Thanks for the draw, Patty.

  • Tatiana says:

Mmm, Ryan Gosling, oh YES! I would not complain if I found myself sitting next to him. He IS fine. Ryan Reynolds, too. And Clive Owen and yes, still George Clooney. I’d want all of them to be wearing this when I meet them. LOL. As if that would ever happen.

  • TaffyJ says:

I love Jeremy Renner for all the Gosling reasons. This man in a suit is hawt. I’d like to see him in Beloved Man, but only if I get to apply it.

    Oh wait…Mark Ruffalo…Yes.

    • Ann says:

Taffy, so glad you mentioned Jeremy Renner. I wasn’t familiar with him until I got hooked on a cop series from a couple of years ago called “The Unusuals.” Did you ever see it? He was great in it, but sadly it barely lasted one season …

  • ojaddicte says:

I totally get the Gosling thang. Sculpted much in Crazy, Stupid Love? I’m getting vapours… Anyhoo, Michael Fassbender would be yummy in this too, I think. Thank you for sharing!

  • Ginny M says:

I LOVE Heather’s choices of Clive Owen and Viggo Mortensen (reportedly famous for his under-bathing). But I can only imagine my boyfriend, George Clooney, would be marvelous in Beloved Man…since he’s my …oh, never mind. 🙂

  • Heather F says:

I never ‘got’ the Gosling appeal until I finally saw Drive last month…yum. Though I’ve got to agree with Jenny above–Clive Owen is a great choice. I’ll throw Viggo Mortensen into the mix as well (what a lovely mix of men…things always seem to develop this way at the Posse–thanks Patty!! (for the man-candy thoughts as well as the giveaway):-)

    • Patty says:

Yeah, Drive put me over the edge on him too. Then Blue Valentine just for his sheer talent.

I can do Clive and Viggo too! Viggo strikes me as a little too, um, dirty. He may shower every day, but I keep thinking probably not. Maybe it’s just the movies he does that makes me think no on the showering. 🙂

  • oohlily says:

I’m so envious that you can get your boys to try something unknown on skin! When mine see me advancing with a spray in hand they literally start backing away from me. Lol!

Gosling’s a bit too ‘pretty’ for my tastes. I guess if I had to pick one actor to spray this on and sniff it would probably be Colin Firth.

    • Ann says:

Hi, lady! In line right behind you, seconding the wonderful Colin Firth! And don’t feel bad, my DH makes for the door when he sees I’m getting into “Try this, honey” mode.

      • oohlily says:

Such good taste we share! It’s just frustrating, and it’s not like I’m chasing them with my Diorissimo – you know? What could a little Cabaret and Coriandre hurt??

    • Dina C. says:

I’m a Colin Firth fan, too, so here’s another vote for Colin as the representative to be the face for Beloved Man. 🙂 My DH is a good sport about trying new scents, and I’d love to sniff this on him. Please enter me in the drawing. Thanks!

      • oohlily says:

You’re so fortunate! Does he have a specific kind of scent that he prefers?

        • Dina C. says:

The poor guy has a weak sense of smell, so he’ll wear whatever I hand him. He only wears scent when he knows I’m gonna be around to appreciate it. 🙂

          • oohlily says:

Oh wow, that’s kind of like my mom, she bases it on what my pops likes best. She said that as long as he actually likes it and it doesn’t smell bad to her, she doesn’t really care. He’s a chemist and pretty fussy about which synthetics he’s smelling in there.

    • Patty says:

Oh, they do that too. It’s a mood thing, but usually they are pretty good sports. They are just really picky and don’t like much, especially the typically “masculine” fragrances, they just feel too normal to them and don’t interest them. I’m totally on board with Colin Firth doing, well, anything in anything, mostly would prefer it be naked with me. You know, if I get a choice. 🙂

  • Jan Last says:

When they finally pick the guy who will play Christian in Shades of Gray (yes I read it and so did all of you, lol), I think they should make him wear Amouage Beloved man on the set every day.

    • Patty says:

Okay, I read the first book, or most of it. Still haven’t finished it. I didn’t mind the story at all, but the writing. Bleah. I think a movie will greatly improve the story. 🙂

  • RuthF says:

I’d just like to pair up Adrien Brody with Interlude man if I may.

  • Jenny Katz says:

Let’s see. Classy and hot? I would have said Daniel Craig, but he was so not-funny on Saturday Night Live that I’m disenchanted. I’m gonna go with… Clive Owen. Would love a sample of this beautiful-sounding juice. Thanks for the opportunity to enter!

    • Patty says:

Clive Owen is awfully pretty. Yeah, I think he’d represent this well. What did Daniel Craig do? I haven’t seen SNL i forever.

  • RuthF says:

Ryan Gosling, yes!! I would love to try Beloved man, recently tried Interlude Man which is just incredibly amazing, love it! I think that would be hard to beat but you never know.
