Happy New Year!

I am actually writing this before Christmas (on the 20th, to be exact) because in an uncharacteristic fit of competence I am not leaving things until the last minute. Not because I am jetting off to someplace for the holidays- as my old friend Lynn said “why go somewhere else when you live at the end of the rainbow?” Nor would I if I could. Travel these days seems like a nightmare, with all the new things we have to do so the airlines and the government keep us “safe” (strip naked and full body cavity searches will be next- I didn’t indulge that at the Ramrod in the 80’s and I do not feel like it now, stone cold sober and far less lithe.) And the freeways? Crazy time! I think that the new cars are to blame. They handle so well and have so many electronic stability controls that even the worst driver can think they’re ready for Formula One and the car will keep them from going t*ts up. And if it doesn’t it has 67 airbags, will call 911 and radio ahead to the nearest Starbucks to have a latte waiting for you at the emergency room. Having recently driven a car from the early 60’s I can tell you there was a reason people were more careful on the road- you had brakes that stopped the car in slightly less space it would take the Queen Mary, a dashboard that was covered in shiny, deadly projections, no shoulder belts and the only airbag was your lungs. If you venture out for New Years, you’re going to at best be at some place you wouldn’t be caught dead in normally but paid through the nose to get into after paying through the nose for an Uber to get there. And I dislike unto being frightened by large crowds.

So I stay home for New Years.

New Years 2015, celebrated with friends. In early December, to avoid the holiday rush.

I did have one really fun New Years that involved going out- it was in Milwaukee in the 80’s and the New Years Eve was so unseasonably warm that we literally went out without coats. I think the whole of the city was out, but it wasn’t with that slight desperation that people get on New Years: that “I’m going to have a good time if it kills me!” feeling. The whole town wandered around in wonderment that on this night where normally we’d be wearing sixteen layers we were practically in bathing costumes and people remained surprisingly sober, wanting to enjoy, experience, and remember. Because a few days later it was 40 below.

So my New Years plans will involve Maybe some movies, maybe a good book or two, certainly some nibbles, and a generous splash of Caron Royal Bain de Caron.

Royal Bain de Caron used to be called (when I bought it as a toddler in the late 70’s “Royal Bain de Champagne” before the lawyers decided that they needed to let Caron know the name was a no-no (probably some technical legal thing- can’t tell the guy in the next valley he has to call his wine “methode champagnoise” if you let a perfumer call their perfume champagne.) This one goes back to 1941 and smells pretty much like I remember it. A little less sparkly and tart in the opening perhaps (but who isn’t?) but still has the delicious creaminess of the vanilla and amber, a touch of benzoin-booziness and a decent slug of musk, all overlaid by subtle rose, lilac and violet. he only way I can describe it is that it is, without being foody in any way, like some airy little French dessert: frothy, light custard with rosewater and candied violets and a little puff pastry. Just the sort of tidbit that should be served with a icy flute of Veuve Cliquot. By Yves, the hunky 22-year old waiter who may have something more for you than pastry..

Royal Bain de Caron is available at various e-tailers at shockingly decent prices. Don’t tell anyone. I purchased my bottle from one of them, I can’t remember which.

I hope you all have a lovely New Years; if you feel like it, share your plans in the comments. I think my movie might be The Poseidon Adventure: that’s New Years themed, right?

I giggled all the way through this- your description of airline traveling, modern cars vrs the muscle cars we used to drive, the implied pressure of New Year’s Eve! My favorite New Year’s memory is of my friend (who owned a small moving service) showing up at our New Year’s Day brunch driving her huge moving van because her (soon to be Ex) husband took their car being a jerk the night before. LOL she wasn’t going to let that stop her fun!

Happy New Year, Tom! Stopping by late to say you triggered the fondest memory: riding around at night after a snow when we were kids, in the back of our 1955 Ford, a big, round, blue behemoth. Looking at people’s holiday decorations in our area. Mom and Dad quietly chatting in the front seat. One of those powerful moments of feeling … warm and safe and contented? So much so I still remember it almost 60 years later.

I have a huge soft spot for people who “over” decorate for Christmas. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a plastic, lit up baby Jesus with Mary, Joseph, and the three wise men in glowing attendance. I even (sort of) miss snow. Making snow forts, watching Jackie the poodle play snowplow (while Max the scary Doberman had to be carried to the porch unless the walks were completely clear) and coming in for hot chocolate with little marshmallows.

We had a blue Ford wagon as well. a 70’s one that was about six miles long, or felt it to us as we careened from the back seat to the “way back.” When we were little my mom and dad would take it (and us) to the drive-in with sleeping bags, knowing we’d be out like a light by the first half of the double feature.

A happy & healthy 2025 to all the Posse & readers!
I wore Sarrasins yesterday. The latest batch. I need to get better acquainted again before I review. I’m delighted to own it again!
Today I wore Jo Malone London Orange Bitters. Refreshing & literally mouthwatering. Perfect for a new start.
Stayed in to comfort Mr Jarvis Cockapoo who is terrified of fireworks

My New Year’s Eve was pretty boring. Worked until 8, poked around the internet until 11:30, then watched the ball drop and then went to bed. Now I am making my pork roast and later this afternoon I am going to try my hand at making mulled white wine. The joys of being 42 because going out for New Year’s isn’t fun anymore. I’d rather not deal with drunk people.

Happy New Year Tom and everyone! We had a weird power outage around dinner time due to a thunder storm which had me cooking over our gas range by flashlight. Fun! But a couple hours later power was restored in time for movie watching. We saw “Singing in the Rain,” which hubby had never seen, and “Red One,” the new Christmas movie on Netflix. Each was enjoyable. I’ve never seen the Poseidon Adventure. I need to add that to my list. The Caron sounds really delicious. I have woefully neglected the House of Caron. I wore Parfum Sacre on Xmas Eve from an almost dried up sample, and was blown away. Those dregs were amazing.

The Poseidon Adventure is a hoot.

Sadly most of the Carons were pretty disastrously reformulated several years ago. IDK if the versions sold now are okay or not.

Another year gone, and at lightning speed.
We never go anywhere on NYE. When I was young, I always felt that NYE (and Valentine’s Day) were too filled with pressure to have fun or else.
I spent NYE day watching a Thin Man movie marathon on TCM; today my husband will have bowl games on all day so I think I will make a run to TJMaxx and check out the clearance section for beauty and fragrance. Maybe I’ll find a treasure.

Happy new year! I have all kinds of wishes for it but main hope is that it is sane and reasonable for all of us — and we find pleasure and bits of joy in what we do.

Picked up the Indian food last night and saw someone walking in the village (an adult) in a pink bunny suit. Both absurd and very very sweet.

It’s been a long time since I ventured to something big and celebratory on NYE. Like my Xmas fantasies I think I’d like to spend the night in a big fancy old style hotel, with a long walk in a great city, room service dinner, a soak in a huge tub, finally retiring to a huge comfy bed and a room service breakfast the next morning.

I wore Shalimar yesterday. Not yet sure what it will be today. It’s blowing a gale and might rain. Maybe Mitsouko … or maybe a big tuberose…

I think I’ve mentioned it before but I have never gone out for New Years eve. It’s always felt like you were obligated to go out and have fun. Of course if I had that private jet, I might gather up a few people and go somewhere just because we could. 😉
Thanks for mentioning the end of the rainbow. It made me decide to change the picture on my laptop on January 1. I have a picture I took years ago in Maui. There was a gorgeous rainbow that came down and touched the ground not far from where we were – the end of the rainbow. I really looked but did not see the pot of gold, but I did feel the magic.
    Have a magical New Year!

Wishing you everything good and only the best for the coming year, Tom!
I had a fun, active day (in ridiculous weather that, luckily, smoothed out later on) and am now settled at home, listening to Shirley Horn and sketching.

And… I am officially IN LOVE with Sushi Bites – who knew? California Rolls dipped in tempura batter. LAWD JAYZUS!
I’mo be on the elliptical for HOURS!!!

Happy New Year from a fellow Californian up north a bit! I’m dreading ’25, but let’s get on with it. Nuff said. Today, I didn’t have black-eyed peas, so did a crazy mashup of northern white, black beans, and lentils, along with arugula and greens, over long noodles (money coins, green bucks, and longevity). It’s kind of a Pasta e fagioli meets New Year’s southern black eyed peas. Will make cornbread tomorrow.
We’ve had no plans to party since I had a big foot surgery on Xmas eve. I’m off my feet and wheeling around on a knee scooter in the kitchen but did enjoy my first post-op visit day with my surgeon in the big “city” of Sacramento (two hours drive), followed by lunch at Mikunis with the “hubs,” yesterday, Monday. The sushi was dream-worthy (gawd I’m drooling on cue thinking of the Freaky Edamame). We had the Marilyn Monroll and Annie Arai, among other tidbits… sigh.
I’m wearing Solstice Scents, “Woodstove” and have been alternating with Mandy Aftel’s “Sepia.” This is a good time to test and enjoy! Feeling sorry for myself and the surgery and all my restrictions, I have overindulged in perfume buying. Austerity begins on January 6th, and then really commences hardcore on January 20th.
We are finishing the series “Diplomat” which suffers from poor writing and directing, but is now nonetheless compelling, and how we’ll welcome the new year, along with obligatory Zonin champagne. I highly recommend “Hitman” (seriously good) and “The Six Triple Eight”–engrossing and a history I’m sorry to say I did not know.
    Cheers!

Overindulging in perfume is one of the safest ways to overindulge. Doesn’t kill your liver, doesn’t make you fat, and if you pick one that smells bad you can just wash it off.

I’m watching the “Dynasty” reboot on Netflix. Totally silly and fun, with knowing nods to the original.

    • Maggiecat says:

Ooh, I’ve done the knee scooter thing (after a triple ankle fusion). Those scooters look like more fun than they are. Hope you heal well and quickly – perfume sounds like a perfect source of comfort in the meantime!
