Oribe Cote d’Azur, Desertland and Valley of Flowers

Will Rogers’ home in the Palisades, in happier times. Gone.

I am going to jump in here and briefly hijack this review to give you an update on the situation here in Los Angeles.

The fires are not out yet, but the situation is far better than it was last week, The winds have died down somewhat, and although they are returning later in the week, they are not expected to be as strong as they were at the beginning of the fire events, when LAFD and LACFD could not use water-dropping aircraft to fight the fires. Later in last week when the Sunset fire (which was chillingly close to my place and visible from my building) occurred, they were able to use those tools and had the fire relatively under control in a matter of hours. It is vile and disgusting (not to mention an insult to the brave men and women who fight those fires) to try to score cheap political points off this tragedy- the point was that in the record winds (gusts of over 100MPH) the firefighters had to use what they could- water from the hydrants fed from reservoirs. and tanker trucks brought in over surface streets. When you are fighting a fire that is the size of Chicago, while trying to get your ground equipment through streets crowded with evacuees and cars abandoned by them. And not using the Pacific Ocean which is the usual resource to battle these fires.

Gladstone’s in Malibu, where for 50 years Angelenos took out of town visitors for mediocre fish but a spectacular view. Gone.

I also have seen comments from people that these residents somehow “deserved” this because they were wealthy or lived in an area prone to fires. Well the Palisades, while not Skid Row, is the home to retirees, apartment-dwellers, elderly pensioners and is firmly middle-class and since the last fire that neighborhood had was in 1963 I can’t call that “prone”.  I would hope people aren’t mean spirited enough to think that people in Kansas “deserve” to die in tornados or people in Florida “deserve” to die in hurricanes or that people who live in the snowbelt should just shut up about deadly, crippling snowstorms. I hope that we are collectively kinder than that; I have backed off reading social media comments to help maintain that illusion of humanity.

My view of the Sunset Fire, thankfully knocked down quickly.

I did go for a drive yesterday. I could not take the usual route because a lot of it was closed off because of the fires. The National Guard is stationed in Santa Monica (and I assume around the other fire borders) keeping people from entering for reasons of both safety and security. I actually didn’t want to enter- it’s going to be painful to witness the devastation to areas of the city I love and have proudly shown to so many friends who have visited. Of course that pain is nothing compared to the people directly affected by this tragedy.

A fact that I wish the blowhards, bloviators, and Monday-morning Quarterbacks would think about before they open their laptops and big traps..

Thanks for letting me vent, and now back to our regularly scheduled program..

I don’t know about you but I had no idea that Oribe, a company (rightly) noted for it’s hair care products even did scents, but cruising through the C.O. Bigelow website looking for a Christmas present or two I found that not only did they, but they have a sampler set for $18 of all three scents. Since that’s the price of two limited time only McRibs (not that I would ever consume something so dreadful..) I tossed one in the basket to get free shipping. So, what are they? How are they?

Côte d’Azur is apparently the scent of their hair products and they state it has bergamot, jasmine and sandalwood. I do kind of get those but I also get something that smells like melon. Like someone stuffed a cantaloupe with jasmine leaves. Which is not the way I remember their hair care line smelling, but oh well. If you have a low threshold for fruity-florals, you won’t care for this one. Mine is at zero, soooo..

Desertland lists juniper berry, lavender, pine and cedarwood. Now this one opens sharp- like freshly sawn pine boards were used to smack the living daylights out of a bunch of very ripe juniper berries. As much as I love that portion of the program I suppose that it couldn’t last, but the lavender creeping in and the pencil-shavings cedar keep this one firmly in the fun zone, and I love it for that.

Valley of Flowers is rose, jasmine and peony with a base of amber, wood, and musk. Not my favorite- there’s something of the aquatic in here that kind of floods that valley of flowers, which were, frankly, kind of generic to begin with. Now I am fully willing to admit that subtlety and I are, while not enemies, not exactly pals. Nothing thrills me more that flowers with a threatening aura (I would still love to get a bottle of JAR Fermez Tes Yeux, but I think it’s long gone..) so a scent that it more, shall we say, self effacing isn’t going to be on top of my top ten list. I like it, but wouldn’t jump through hoops to get it. Luckily you and I don’t have to.

McYuck

So there was one direct hit, one that went lightly wide of the mark and one miss. But having written that I wish everyone would do these discovery sets. They’re a good way to try without committing (too much) in these days where free samples seem to have gone the way of the buffalo. And more kudos for doing them in travel sizes.

All of these are available at the Oribe website: $126 for 2.5oz, $34 for .34oz travel spray, and $18 for the pictured coffret of 3 .07oz “Experience Set.” The latter I purchased from C.O. Bigelow.

My beloved hairdresser, whom I’ve followed from salon to salon for over a decade, used to be at a salon that used Oribe products. The smell was ok, not really my thing, but oh did it last. I would take days and multiple shampoos for it to leave me, and I was very happy when my hairdresser opened her own salon and selected a much subtler product line.

My background is in forestry in California and I’m also a bit of a California water buff, so the amount of people being wrong on the internet about the LA fires has been maddening when not downright offensive. Stay safe and sane out there.

    • Tom says:

I do remember the scent of the stuff lingering but it didn’t bug me. It wasn’t a scent that I adored (like I did some of the Aveda products) but I didn’t hate it.

There are some real kooks out here with the conspiracy theories. The new one is that you need to have the roof of your house painted blue to fool the space lasers.

  • Portia says:

Tom, I’m so sorry about your city. Having lived in a fire zone for many years and been next on the evacuation list a couple of times I know how awful it can be.
Thinking of all the LA peeps.

Also, I like the sound of the fragrances. Without wanting to own them for me I can imagine them being perfect for non pefumistas and $18 would make it a good add on to a soap or shower gel for presents.

    • Tom says:

I was thinking about the fires in Australia this past week. Terrible.

I think these would make great shower products.

  • rosarita says:

Tom, I’m glad you vented and hope you will continue to do so. There’s a huge difference between watching the news and hearing from someone who is on the ground. So sorry for all involved. Words are so inadequate.

  • Dina C. says:

I really appreciated your comments about the fires, Tom, and agree with them wholeheartedly. I feel terrible for all those who have lost their homes, rich and not rich. So glad you are safe. The small handful of people I know who live there are safe, but I found out a gal I know, her parents’ home in Altadena was lost. It’s that six degrees of separation thing. We’re more connected than we realize.

As for sample sets and coffrets, they’re a great thing! Love being able to try a bunch of stuff for a reasonable price.

    • Tom says:

I only know people second hand who have lost homes. That’s bad enough.

Yes, sample sets are a very good thing.

  • March says:

I went back in the archives and found it — when I did a “royal family” post. Allegedly Meghan Markle wears Côte d’Azur. That’s also when I learned that Oribe made fragrances, I had no idea. People online can be absolutely awful and I try to engage with the internet strategically to avoid as much awfulness as I can. Hugs to you.

    • Tom says:

I have to go find that one..

Thanks for the metaphoric hugs. With they were actual. I think I took you and Patty through the Palisades when you came to visit.

  • MzCrz says:

Tom, glad you vented. Gladder still you are safe.
I lived in L.A. from 1978 to mid 1991. Loved it. While the loss of lives and homes is horrid, the loss of wildlife and natural habitats is beyond awful. I saw a clip of a mountain lion and a cub fleeing the blaze. Where can they go?! Just typing that makes me as tearful as when I first saw it. Animals don’t have insurance or second homes. Yes, I am an unapologetic misanthrope. Screw the trolls. Pathetic spineless filth.

Never considered trying Oribe. Crissy Teigen comes to mind with that brand for unknown reasons.

    • Tom says:

I’ve wondered about wildlife as well. We have seen a few raccoons (out of the ordinary for us) but that’s it. I hope everyone is just giving them a break and letting them be.

  • alityke says:

    Dear Tom
Thank you for the LA update. So many people made homeless & uprooted. Not to mention those who lost their lives.
I’ve never tried Oribe fragrances & reading your reviews they don’t sound like they’re for me.

  • cinnamon says:

One of my most successful gifts brought from US to UK was a box of CO Bigelow own brand shower gel and moisturiser. You can Oribe hair stuff here. He was such a thing back in the day…

I’m glad things are improving. And it is so heartening to see firefighters from elsewhere coming to help out. As to trolls, I wish there were something like garlic for vampires that when you held it up in front of them (the trolls) they just screamed, shrivelled and disappeared — poof!! — into the air. We would all be better off.

    • alityke says:

Cinnamon, would the garlic equivalent work on the pair of US Ultra Trolls too? Oh for something that would go just that to Agents Orange & Interfering Stench before next Monday.
Interfering Stench has fallen out with Garidge after finding out that Garidge is afraid & felt humiliated by a milkshake.

    • Tom says:

One of the things I loved about living in Alphabet City was the easy proximity to CO Bigelow. It was like my CVS. That and Murray’s Cheese shop. Aedes de Venustas (sp?) is there now as well.

  • Maggiecat says:

Glad you’re safe, Tom, and people who are trying to find some way to blame people for natural disasters should … well, not gonna finish that sentence in the interest of being civilized.
I actually wore Cote d’Azur today! So obviously, we differ on it, though mostly I like it because coordinating shampoo, hair care, and scent seems kind of cool. I had higher hopes of a scent advertised as a jasmine/ sandalwood combo (my two favorite notes), but it’s wearable. At least to me.
    Stay safe!

    • Tom says:

I really wanted C d’A to work but there was that fruity something that just didn’t for me. But you rock it, so good for you. Skin Chemistry is weird- I was convinced Angel was the devil incarnate until I smelled it on someone who wore it well.

I am finishing your sentence in my head..

  • Maya says:

I’m glad you vented. Sadly, in times of crisis, the uglies crawl out of their hidey holes to spew their nasties before eventually retreating again. I always remind myself that that the good and kind and empathetic are always there too, doing whatever they can, however they can, and whenever they can – often quietly with no show or fanfare.

    • Tom says:

Very true. But what the uglies don’t realize is that the cloak of anonymity they think they have on the interwebs is just that- a cloak. One that is very easily pulled aside. It’s happened before and the results are not pretty.

  • Pam says:

I’ve been thinking of you, Tom, and all the people affected by these fires. Keeping y’all in my prayers. Stay safe.

  • KC says:

Fellow Angeleno here, living in Toluca Lake, now with two more humans and two more dogs, as my dearest friend and her wife had their home burnt to rubble in the Eaton Canyon fire. I’m also the daughter of a fire chief, and your update on the situation in LA is 100 spot-on. Thanks for writing it.

    • Tom says:

Thank you KC, and thanks for being one of the good people helping others. That’s the LA I know and it doesn’t get the publicity it should.

  • Musette says:

People be peoplin’, Tom . Alas.

The Oribes sound… okaaay? I do like their haircare, though.

    That Sunset Fire… yikes!

I’m so glad you’re safe and sound.

    • Tom says:

The Oribes were okay. I like the hair products a lot. Oddly enough, when I lived in New York I had my hair cut a few times at John Dellaria in SoHo by Danillo, who became a bit at Oribe. Super-talented guy, extremely nice and looked like a young Marlon Brando. I can still remember practically melting when he would go by on his bike (bicycle, not motor) and call out a cheery “Hi Tom!”
