Shampoo Bars

So this is about shampoo bars. Not actual bars where they pour prosecco down you while giving you a shampoo and scalp rub (although if they don’t have those, they should) but shampoo in bar form.

I have my hair mown about every six months or so. So I go from Harrison Ford in “Blade Runner” to Harrison Ford in “Call of the Wild” (without ever actually resembling Harrison Ford, mind you.) I don’t style my hair. I have the same blow dryer I had when I was 16: A GE handheld with settings from windy to gale-force and cold to paint-stripper. I barely use it. As fa as product I will usually put a little pomade of some sort to keep my hair from standing straight up and roostering itself at everyone within sight. Sometimes that works. As for shampoo I do have a couple, usually just a whatever smells decent and doesn’t promise to either strip my hair or oil it down.

I am also not really a bar soap person. I prefer liquid soaps and the pump, at least at home. Even my fave Erno Laszlo black soap has somewhat taken a backseat to the pump action black cleanser they make, at least in the shower. (which is over-run with little bottles of LUSH, Kiehl’s, Moulton Brown, and C.O. Bigelow at this point.) But my old friend Val mentioned again that a friend of hers makes soaps and sells them on Etsy, so I went to check out her wares.

In addition to having bunches of cute little soaps in various cute shapes, ranging from pretty to pretty wacky she also does bar shampoo. Since none of her wares I saw were over $10 (and most less) I figured WTH- give it a try. So I initially bought two bar shampoos and a poop emoji. Rose scented. Because poop soap.

So having used he shampoo bar for a couple of weeks, what do I think? I like it. Hers are spiked with Argan oil, which Kiehl’s briefly flirted with and which I liked in their products. The soap does create a nice creamy lather that doesn’t dry out my scalp or hair and rinses clean. I have a soap holder right near my shower head to it’s a no-brainer to just keep it there in easy reach. Certainly if I went to the gym (which I should) and showered there (which I wouldn’t- I’m weird about that. I go home) it would be more convenient and were I travelling (which I am not) I assume that it, not being a liquid or a gel would not be subject to the TSA’s whims.

So, would I buy again? Yes. Frankly at this price point ($6 per bar, $7.50 with the aluminum travel container plus shipping- so order in bulk) and being this easy to use It would be a no-brainer just to have in the house. My hair isn’t colored or chemically processed and I have no problems with thinning so I can’t speak to how it will work for those who have those issues. But on days where I just want to jump in the shower, scrub myself down, hose myself off, and get on with my day this is a great stuff.

Have you tried bar shampoo? A devotee of the hand-made soap world (which I am afraid in my next frontier/obsession/moneysuck)? Let us know in the comments.

I purchased my items from the seller’s Etsy Shop

I have color- treated chin length hair, and I LOVE shampoo bars! I have used them exclusively for a few years. I like that the ingredients are usually pretty simple and clean (I’m partial to goat milk varieties) — no worrying about toxic chemicals.

I’m not really a soap bar person, I want my shampoo to gloop out of the bottle. Scented soaps make me think of the time, years ago, that someone gave the girls soaps scented like chocolate or brownies or something for Christmas, wrapped and under the tree. Fat Stanley the maltese tore into them and I got to have a fun convo with the vet about whether he needed an emergency appt. It did seem to clean his GI tract out! (I deserve to be marked as spam for sharing that.)

FYI- We don’t mark people as spam. Unless you post something that it a bald attempt to sell something. I don’t come to your home and hawk my tupperware and I hope that you would give me the same courtesy (I am referring to a comment that Blogger gaily let through that was actual spam, which I deleted.)

That seems very convenient and affordable for groups of people you mentioned: those who travel, go to the gym, those with short “easy” hair. Alas, I do not have easy hair. It’s wavy-curly and long and needs stuff meant for that hair, plus a wide toothed rake-like comb to detangle while it’s wet. I’m just grateful that I gave up coloring it 9 years ago, because that was a headache. Those shampoo bars are cute and would make fun stocking stuffer gifts.

    • Tom says:

Oh I don’t think they’re a substitute for real shampoo, especially if you’ve got long hair. But useful at the gym- you can just rub it into the scalp and rinse it out.

I’m glad I gave up coloring mine. I had it black for a bit but I’d get roots by the time I got to the car. Made me understand why people go lighter as they get older. Blonder blends..

My hair is bleached white then toned greyish. It is now VERY thin, after a life time of thick curls & coils to my waist, it’s now a cropped pixie. I have tried bar shampoo in the past but waist length hair & a bar do not mix.
Now I use New Wash by Hairstory. It’s a co-wash & suits me very well. Comes in a pouch so excellent for the gym. When I need a good clarifying session I use a caffeine shampoo & conditioner but that’s only when my hairdresser is washing off the bleach & toner.
Do like the poop emoji one for shits & giggles presents

I tried shampoo bars ages ago, when they first emerged and wasn’t smitten. Same with bath bombs. I’m a gel in a bottle girl all the way. Guess I like that sqidginess…

  • Portia says:

HA! I don’t have hair anymore Tom. It all gets washed with my body, with soap or shower gels. Not enough of it to bother with really.

Darn it. You send me off to spend cash a lot here. I’m checking out the “poop emoji” soap. Perhaps orange citrus might be more in line as rose seems disconcerting in the context.

I love bar shampoo and bar soap! I use JR Liggett classic bar shampoo for my long, straight, fine, balayage hair and it does fantastic with it. I’ve tried a few brands of bar shampoo but keep coming back to the JR Liggett one. I introduced my husband to the world of fun, fancy bar soap (he just used plain Dove before me…) so we love to pick up a few bars when traveling, or hit up our local shops for nice ones. I like that the packaging is usually just paper so it can actually get recycled.

Hope this post goes through and I’ll try a few times if needed. I want to wish everyone a lovely and happy summer or winter as the case may be. I will not be attempting to comment again, for some time anyway. It’s too frustrating. More often than not everything I send is listed as SPAM and last night a comment I made to Cinnamon’s post went through and hours later was deleted. That’s happened before too. That’s all folks!

    • Tom says:

I’m sorry. That happens all the time to me too. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be anything we can do.

I keep having to log out to log in again. Frequently Jetpack tells me I’m off line & I’m not.
Dunno what the heck is going on

    • March says:

Hi Maya — I am SO SORRY this is happening to you! We get hundreds of spam comments in the filter every day. I go in and look and your comments are not there. I have no idea why this is happening, and my (admittedly non-technical) attempts don’t seem to be able to figure out what the issue is or how to fix it. I’d hate for you to think we’re indifferent to this — we so appreciate comments! There are aspects that need to be updated and I’m sort of afraid to do that tbh in case it takes the whole site down.

      • Tom says:

The weird thing is that it never gets to a filter it just won’t let you post..

      • Maya says:

I get it. I really do. It’s just been a bad run this time and nothing I do seems to help. I admit I have an…um…strong temper and getting frustrated does not help. I really enjoy this blog and all of you guys so I’ll be here. I’ll simply shut up for a while and take it from there.

    • Musette says:

DagNABBIT!!! What March Said. It’s not you. It’s not even ’us’.

Site just be gettin’ weird on occasion

Even we ‘administrators’ get beaned sometimes. I had a whole POST! where it marked every single of my replies as SPAM… but then they were all there… ( definite Shrug Emoji)

      • Tom says:

Yeah it really doesn’t have any rhyme or reason. Five times in a row I’m spam so I copy and paste it and then 15 minutes later it’s just fine. Annoying!
