Just Not That Into You

First- winner of last week’s draw is Dina C. Please contact me at tmp zero zero at yahoo dot com with your address. Now back to regularly scheduled snark.

Creed is a house that I have kind have avoided all these years and I am not quite sure why. I am sure that it has nothing to do with the fact that Erwin Creed is young, handsome. rich. accomplished, has cheekbones that could make Katharine Hepburn green with envy, and won’t date me.

No, not at all.

Now we all know that Creed has it’s fans. I seem to recollect that there is a thriving business in making fake Creed products to fool the sort of people who seriously think they can get a Rolex on Canal Street for $50 or a Vuitton Keepall at Santee Alley and it will be the real thing. I have tested the real thing at various reputable retailers and kind of don’t see what the fuss is about. They’re nice. Not life changing. And while Creed claims that they are a centuries old concern, Wikipedia notes that that history is only supported by the word of the company and no documentation exists (if you believe Wikipedia.) So I went to Surrender to Chance to get some of the ones that people kvell over.

Aventus is bergamot. Not just any bergamot, but (according to them) “exclusive, hand-picked Calabrian bergamot.” Which is lovely- I am glad it’s not some machine-picked stuff from, say, West Covina. This was not very long lasting and I was left with what they refer to as a “decadent base of cedarwood intertwined with The House of Creed’s signature ingredient of ambergris notes.” Or what I think of as a nice skin scent. It’s $365 for 50ML. I can get others that will tread that ground for less but I guess I won’t be able to say it’s Creed.

Green Irish Tweed is the one that I remember the fans going nutso over. It’s supposed to be the best thing ever- it’s certainly the most duped. It starts off soapy then becomes very green like grass and mint and basil and celery, Then it smells like coriander and celery seed come in, with lime zest. It’s very nicely done and I can see why it’s popular. I can’t really see why it’s $345 for 50ML, but I guess I am just not that refined. I like my green with tendrils that grab. This does however fill up a space very well so I would hope that fans would go steadily.

Virgin Island Water was the one that I immediately liked. Mostly because of it’s initial hit of coconut- like opening a can of coconut cream. It’s so coco-loco at the opening you feel like it should come with a paper umbrella and a lei. After that “Hawaii Five-O” start it gets more accessible and less weird (not a plus for me) as it becomes a more conventional unisex scent with fruits and white flowers. I still smell Tiare and Coconut, just a lot less “book-em Dan-o.” Which is too bad. It’s also $345 for 50ML, so although I like it, I don’t think I need it.

Think Erwin will ask me out? No?

Have you tried any of these? Any Creed favorites? Discuss in comments. My samples were from Surrender to Chance

    Hey Tom,
The ones you note are not my favourites.
Here are bottles of Fantasia de Fleurs (ad copy says created for Sisi of Austria), Carmina (a strange more-ish sweet cherry thing), Iris Tuberose (as advertised) and Jin has Delphinus (amber with interesting un-noted citrus opening)
    Portia xx

Creed never interested me very much but I do not have any real reason for it. Yours is a good one though!
I did try Adventus once to see what it was all about, but I don’t even remember it. Recently I sampled Delphinus and thought it was nice but not for that kind of money. (They hadn’t gotten Eladaria in yet.) I think I might like Virgin Island Water. I love coconut to eat and smell and am a fan of all tropical scents. At their prices though, they better be among the best perfumes made on planet Earth!

I think VIW is the only one I’ve liked, but not at that price! And the GIT abbreviation has always made me laugh (UK slang for an idiot) apparently it’s the king’s favorite. I am clearly not the Creed target audience.

  • Alityke says:

Jetpack keeps saying I am unauthorised, the Error 404 but I’m nothing if not persistent & got in through the other door.
I liked VIW when I tried it, well over a decade ago but not enough to buy.
There are many coconut water scents out there now that would fill the same itch
