Posse! It’s STANKIN’ HOT!!! out here – high of 90F!!
… at FIVE pm.
::daHECK!you say!!!::
Anyhow – looks as if I’m going to have to take my laptop in – it’s not talking to my mouse… not itself!( Shruuug) – oh,well. I think we’re still in Retrograde so I guess I should be grateful it hasn’t risen up and tried to choke me! Day’s still young, though…
So! Musings! I haz ’em!
The title refers to the extreme heat and sun, which means Hawaiian Tropical still rules! My Summer go-to,Hermes Pamplemousse Rose, is a gorgeous accompaniment but it gets eaten rather quickly in 90s temps. Plus it’s a tad too chilly and refined for this rambunctious weather and vicious sunshine after the pouring rains. I’m a Jean-Claude Ellen’s fangirl from was way back, loving the restrained beauty of (especially) his Hermes oeuvre – it reminds me of Grace Kelly ( her public persona) – the alt, chilly beauty that Everyman aspires to. Verra elegant.
But sometimes? Sometimes you just wanna Jane Russell it, ya know? Maybe on a (cotton – WAAAAY! too hot for synthetic or…(gasp!) Wool!!!) blanket under a shade tree.. I found the Jane Russell version of Pamp Rose in Maison Margiela Never Ending Summer ( which I insist on calling ‘Endless Summer ‘ – sorry MM, I’ll try to do better) . It’s startlingly similar Pamp Rose , but where HSH Grace wears a bespoke suit and kid gloves Jane is in cutoffs and cowboy boots! I’m thinking cowboy cutoffs FTW! It’s Too Darn Hot to be in a suit and gloves. Never Ending Summer has that hint of ‘Big Ol’Nasty Redhead’ vibe that HTropic absolutely LOVES!
I have a small sample from StC… But I think I see a FB in my Very Near Future!
The First Peach. 10 days back the First Peach ripened. Oh,SO good! I invited friends to come pick.. First Peaches are special.. and they trigger childlike wonder …But also childish reactions. ‘Oh! You… brought a BOX!?’
10 DAYS LATER,after a week of extreme heat and torrential rains. ‘Oh! You only brought ONE box!? Lemme get you another!!’. I’ve processed So Damb Many Peaches! Chicken/bacon meatballs with Habanero- peach gravy ( in the freezer for colder weather)! Grilled! Pureed! Cobbler! M ore cobbler! MOAR cobbler!!!
Hurled into the stratosphere!!
( which Autotrash changed to…CHEETOS!!!?!). And I have yet ANOTHER tree about 10 days out!
I did process 5 gallon bags of cobbler base while wearing vintage Mitsouko perfume. It wasn’t a fail.. But I felt a bit like a fraud, wearing my Mistress’s perfume while covered in peach skin and juice all over the place. Luckily Mitsy Don’t Care so I can happily wear her again. Forever.
But … did I mention that I’m sick of peaches?
What are YOU up to? How’s your weather ( it’s all we talk about here) –
Do you want some peaches??
Off topic. I got my HT today. It’s great!!
Squeeeee! Welcome to the Tribe!!!
YAY!!!!! You are now a member of the cult!!!
Peaches! I love them! When I lived in Florida, a friend who had a vacation home in Georgia would bring boxes of them to her friends.
And… Officially our first 100 degree day today. Still in the 90s at 9. Poor pup hasn’t had a walk in days!
Poor baby! Those are some brutal temps!
Well, our highs in the Bay Area are in the high 70s, so no complaints there. And I have just one leetle peach tree, which gave just about the perfect number of peaches (around 50?). This is the first year she’s really produced (we planted her as a single twig 2.5 years ago, and last year we got a single peach from her, of the threeish she grew, two of them naturally going to our squirrel overlords). In conjunction with my 40ish nectarines and 30ish apricots (from trees planted around the same time, of course), my stone fruit levels have been pretty great this year!
That sounds like a great haul, koyel! I’m jealous! My nectarine tree was supposed to be dwarf… uh… maybe on its planet 25+ft is considered dwarf…
… but I don’t plan to haul my sorry azz up there so ( shrug emoji)
… and s little ‘grrr’ for good measure 😉
It’s hot and shitty here in Montreal, please send peach sorbet and jam!
I’ll get right on it!!!
Oh lordy I remember how the humidity would just make it seem so much hotter- like the moisture in the air was a thousand million little magnifying glasses..
I love peaches and we never seem to get good ones here. They never seem to ripen. We had them in spades in New England. So much so that my mother would buy a bushel of about to go over ones for canning. She would cut them up, and cut out the over-ripe parts. The dogs (two poodles and a doberman who acted like one) sitting by her side waiting for the scraps. Peach cobbler, peach pie, peach preserves, everything but the bellini’s.
And I am going to go upstairs right now and put on some Mitsouko
Tell her I love her! Worship, even!
Love peaches…..so jealous that you are innundated with them! I’ll sooth my jealousy by wearing Mitsouko.
That is definitely Peach Done Right!
I wish 98% of the numerous apricot trees here were peaches instead … sigh. Fortunately we have “Matt the peach guy” who posts up in the parking lot of a local furniture store. News of his arrival spreads like wildfire on social media — I’ve run into friends there. I think he’s from CO and his peaches are lovely.
Nice! I wish you could’ve taken some of mine, too!
Oh Ms A, your peaches sound wonderful!
I’ve been on a very low carb diet for three years now and have reached my weight loss and health goals so I am adding some longed for items to my summer menu. Still haven’t had any sweet corn and I’m waiting for Red Haven peaches. A cold mug of root beer is also in my future.
And yeah, hot! and sooooo humid! Corn sweat is real, dumping all that water into the atmosphere. I would be totally ready for fall but February comes eventually, so I am trying to embrace the heat.
OMG cold Root Beer! The best! There’s a brand from Milwaukee called Sprecher that does the best one I’ve tasted. You can see if they have it near you here:
https://sprecherbrewery.com/pages/store-locator
COLD root beer. Thanks! Walmart carries it around here.
Yep, it’s carried at my local Kroger store. I’ve never heard of it, thanks for the rec!
It’s FABULOUS, Ms A! I think they’re the ones who also make the watermelon soda as well. A little schweeet – but a wedge of lime, ala Corona, dials that down.
Congratulations!!!!!
Sweet corn is ready here – I just picked some yesterday ( forgot how much WORK that is)!
My peaches are in a microclimate ( walled, etc) so they’re about 10 days ahead of everyone else. The ones I just picked are Red Haven … so fabulous!!!
Ha! You can send me your peaches — I’ll figure out something to do with them. Here, it’s just on the edge of blackberry time and the bushes are looking very heavy this year. My go-to for blackberries is crumble. With whatever other fruit is in the house.
Oh, and by the way, today (29 July) is National Lipstick Day! If you partake what are you wearing? I am in Lisa Eldridge’s slightly weird weird (ie, texture) Velveteen Liquid Lip Colour in Rain, which is a pink-red. The formula needs you (or at least me) to prep lips. A bit of a faff. But, I really like this colour.
‘tis a Truth, universally acknowledged, that I don’t get out of bed without lipstick!
I’m definitely YLBB – some version of myself ( tan with pink)
I rarely wear COLOR! because it makes me look like Krusty the Clown
I love the smell of fresh peaches! I bought a few today that were hard as rocks. My hubby loves peaches. I can only eat canned/processed because I have oral allergy syndrome, a bizarre crossover allergic reaction that happens to people who are allergic to birch trees. Can’t eat any fresh fruit with a pit or fresh apples. Pamplemousse Rose and Never Ending Summer both sound really pretty. I’m a fan of the Hermes JCE scents, too. We’re in another wave of high heat and humidity this week. It’s like
the pits of hell!
That pit allergy sounds like the pits of hell, too – and what a fascinating connection ( birch trees!!!)
The weather here? It’s 10pm and 90F (32C) and says it feels like 102F (39C). Humidity is 69% and dew point is 79 degrees. 79 dew point means you can chew the air or you can wear the air. It all equals miserable!
I love fresh peaches – once I peel the fur off. And I noticed fresh cherries got a mention too! I love everything and anything made from either of them.
Mitsy forever!
YIKES!!!
That’s some WEATHER!!
Yeah… Mitsy said ‘hold my beer. We ain’tskeered’a no peaches!
It’s been sooo hot here. And yes, I want peaches! The ones I’ve been getting from our grocery have been—mealy. You know, dry and grainy. I want peaches that have juice that runs all over your face. Bring em on!
Honey!! C’mon ovah! I’ve had to scrub my porch floor because of all the juice!!!
Would you swap your peaches for my apples? They’re the size of grapefruit & ripe already, not supposed to redden up til end of August. Even that’s early? I still have sauce & apple pie filling in the freezer from last year.
I’ve only just recovered from the soft fruit & cherry glut. Last week I preserved jalapeños.
No! I’ve got apples coming up!!
Jealous of your cherries, though
Didja make Cowboy Candy with the jalaps!?
No candied things for me. T2 diabetes.
I pickled sliced jalapeños in white vinegar & sea salt for 48 hrs then drained them, jarred them then covered in good rapeseed oil. They can last for years!
Oh, please… please send me peaches! I ain’t seen a dang local one in Richmond yet. (Gaze was stationed at three different Army bases over the past four years, and if he got leave in the summer, he’d bring us some. Sadly — or not so sadly, depending on your POV — he’s now stationed on O’ahu. So. No peaches, but I foresee another trip to the islands before he ends his stint there.)
I go through this OMG PLEASE COME TAKE SOME OF THIS FRUIT, FOR I HAVE ALREADY EATEN/CANNED/COOKED/PRESERVED/FROZEN ALLLL I CAN MANAGE thing every other year with the two pear trees in our backyard at the farm. I mean, they’re delicious and I’m grateful for them later, but it is three weeks of absolute madness.
Gaze is… grown!??
When did THAT happen!!?!
And I feel your paaaiin! on the canning/ eating/ freezing/ etc…
Sigh
Mildly amusingly Musette, I only like tinned peaches. The real deal are something, something, something but I’m not quite sure. It’s the everything about them.
Apricots are my fuzzy fruit.
Mitsouko though. MMMMMMMMMM
Hug
Portia xx
OMG! I remember that!!!!
Xox
I’m with you on the apricots, Portia. They are hard to find here these days, not sure why.
EVERYONE here has apricot trees, you can’t even give them away when it’s that time of year! Our neighbor picks ours before the trash pandas get them.
MARCH! I’m moving in with you.
Well, feel free to come visit in late June/July, they are EVERYWHERE, including scattered on the ground.
Bummer Rosarita.
I actually like canned (the Yank word for tinned) peaches too. In syrup. Fruit cocktail too. Must be from growing up in the Julia Child years when our mothers wouldn’t be caught dead feeding us that “garbage.” I grew up sneaking Twinkie’s and Spagettios and canned peaches like I was doing crack in a back alley.
