Darling Posse! As I write this snow is stomping across the Central IL Valley region, dropping 5-8″ (hopefully that is the most we’ll get). Well, at least we’re not getting snow/sleet/rain like they are about 40 minutes south. That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. I was supposed to go right into that for a race event but the Event Mgr told me to STAY HOME!
So I did.
And whyyy am I telling you all this? Dunno. Just setting the stage for this post, which is about Two Things – a high ticket ginger and a (very) low-ticket ginger… and how they fell in love.
In the early days (at least to me) of Neela Vermeire’s Creations, I was given a gorgeous Discovery Set of her 4 beautiful perfumes: Trayee, Mohur, Bombay Bling and Ashoka. Everyone (myself included) expected me to fall for Bombay Bling, with the incandescent tropical notes so dear to my heart) – and I did. On the coldest nights in Winter, Bling is one of my go-to perfumes, evoking Bombay in all its sultry glory. But…. despite adoring Bling, I found myself reaching constantly, constantly for Trayee – and not really understanding why. Those notes (blue ginger/cinnamon bark, cardamom, clove, Japanese vetiver (among a host of other ‘aromatics’) shouldn’t have drawn me in, shouldn’t be so compelling. And yet. I have nursed my two 10ml bottles and continue to find it beguiling in the extreme cold and snow (ah! and now we come to why I chose to give you the weather report!). Something about Trayee is both calming and uplifting – ginger is the dominant note for my nose but I get hints of jasmine and other white flowers before the pungent base notes come drifting in (they do not stomp, which is lovely, because they are honkin’ BIG! basenotes). It is unbelievably spectacular! in a quiet, self-assured way. Portia did a fabulous review of it here

Stolen from Portia’s post. Because I am a SAVAGE!
Pivoting for a minute: you all know that I am Quing of Body Moisturizer. I sit here, watching some cooking show, rubbing cream and lotion by the bucket! And my tastes are catholic, ranging from standalone luxury brands like Amouage Lyric and FM Carnal Flower that Do Not Play Well With Others, to drugstore brands. I love Tree Hut, as you know – but there’s another brand, Dr Teal’s, that I really enjoy – and my favorite in that lineup is the Stress Relief. I started by using the shower/bath gel – and I kept thinking ‘wow! this smells sooo familiar’ but I couldn’t place it because I am a goober who Does Not Read the NOTES! Then I started using the Body Oil and Body Lotion. Ahem: Ginger.! Cedarwood! a light citrus note that keeps it from crashing into a miasma of heavy aromatics! In short, a worthy support to the glorious Trayee! For only $5.97!!

This one – not the green one that is eucalyptus-based (though that’s nice, too)
Now. I am definitely NOT suggesting that Dr Teal’s is anywhere near the level of the beautiful complexity that is Trayee – but it definitely IS a great supporting player. I love layering body products with perfume but not all my favorites have matching body products. So it’s a magical thing when I find a great match. And at $5.97? Bliss.
Do you have any high/low perfume/body matches? Any other ginger perfumes? I went on Surrender to Chance and there are SCADS! Weirdly enough, except for 5 o’clock Snooze (h/t March) I haven’t tried a single one!

I own quite a few ginger-themed fragrances. The top five I can recommend are Origins Ginger Essence, Ligne St. Barth Fleur de Gingembre, Hilde Soliani Freschiiissimo, Orebella Nightcap, and Jo Malone Nutmeg & Ginger. It appears that 4160 Tuesdays has new scent out called Ginger Snap, anyone try it yet?
Ooh! Excellent suggestions, thanks!!
Well, since they apparently sell this at the CVS on Sunset right up the street I supposed I am forced to check it out.
And since a lot of these look epsom salt based I can do a lot of hot foot soaks, which I love in winter.
There are quite a few epsom salt scents, too! I like the eucalyptus/ mint scent- feels very spa-y!
Oooooh! I share your love of culinary ginger (as you know!) My struggle w ginger in perfumery is it tends not to hang around. I have some Origins Fresh Ginger, don’t know if they even still make it, that I spray on with abandon. MUST TRY that Trayee!
Trayee is phenomenal, March!
I trust your moisturizer instincts Ms A, you know your stuff. I want some of that Dr Teals.
Kris on NST piqued my interest in Jergens body butters. There’s citrus, rose and sandalwood at $6 or thereabouts. I reach for the sandalwood to wear under No 5 and other Chanels.
I don’t have ginger recommendations, I thinks about the only thing with ginger that I have is Yosh Ginger Ciao.
I just discovered the beauty of sandalwood under No5!!!!!
AND… there’s supposedly a Jergen’s body wash in the original cherry-almond scent.
… or there was…
Try as I might I can’t find it anywhere, irl or online!
::probably just as well, as I would never get out of the shower!!::
Oh honey the rest of the country would never get a drink of water! I’d be using it all to shower with..
We would drain the water table!
Tis the season for JM Ginger Biscuit. It is definitely more cookie than rooty as a perfume, but my favourite ginger scent.
I’m still astonished at my lack of knowledge of ginger perfumes!!!
I’m definitely going to check out the JM ( and I… think (?) there’s at least one other in the line)
In the colder months I drink hot ginger water almost every day. Take a nob, chop it up, add boiled water. Keep topping up the hot water all day. Helps digestion, among other things. I don’t believe I have anything ginger among my perfumes. Will have to do some research.
We’re in a couple of day respite from constant rain. Sun might even come out. Think it might be an Aromatics Elixir day…
I LOVE ginger tea ( and I do as you do)! Love ginger ale! Love gingersnaps! Ginger in kombucha!
Etc
Considering the gastronomic ginger love you’d think I would be awash in ginger perfumes!
Nope!
Hey Musette,
You know Christopher Chong said Trayee is a modern masterpiece and was one perfume he wished had been created for Amouage.
I can see you wafting it through the storms. So cool
Portia xx
I miss Mr Chong! I was just thinking of him this morning, as I dusted my gorgeous bottle of Beloved. Such an elegant man!
Checked out UK suppliers. Amazon seems to be the only stockists. Yep it’s almost 4am here. I can’t sleep. Post holiday brain fog is a being a proper bar steward. Keep asking DH what day it is, he doesn’t know either!
Yikes! Hope that sorts itself soonest!
I love Ginger: fresh; dried. Love. I’m off to Dr. Teals.
Ooh! Hope you LOVE it! Make sure to get the Pink label – there are two Stress Relief options and as lovely as the green (eucalyptus/mint) is, it isn’t ginger.
