Hiram Green No 2: Philtre and Tryst

The weather has turned glorious. Long may it last. But in any case am enjoying it as we have it. On a less chirpy note, this time of year means 1) potholes to the max – it’s no longer a good idea to traverse over the Common road unless you have a pickup truck or a big SUV with thick, heavy tyres and 2) it’s silage time. No matter how many springs I’ve been here I will not be able to smell silage having been spread on the fields and not go yuck. And apparently the local water company is now selling farmers ‘denatured’ sewage to spread on fields …

I got my Covid booster last week. At the same time I dropped the car for a wash and a major interior clean. This is the thing about having a labrador: you can vacuum the inside of your car all you want but the fur will still pop up in unusual places and it will stick in others in such ways as to defeat a regular vac (or a human being with a roll of packing tape). In any case, the car came home immaculate. I had a very woozy afternoon not napping but not doing much else post the jab. By the end of the week my arm no longer hurt.

And, sadly, on Saturday it was off to Sara’s (my fave bakery in the next town over) for her last day of operation. Brought flowers and a card (others had dropped boxes of chocs and cards, and more flowers) and bought some last bits for the weekend. Thankfully, once she’s had a rest, Sara will be doing special orders (like, for Xmas and bdays). I am reminded that during Covid she actually kept baking and offered a dropoff service so your croissant needs were still met. Big sigh.

So, onward. After a number of weeks the second iteration of HG samples. As I finish this post up I’m wearing Clinique Aromatics Elixir yet again because it makes me feel … centred? I mean a witches brew makes me feel centred? What does that say about me?

Today, it’s Tryst and Philtre.

Not to be repetitive but I have a lot of time for Hiram Green perfumes. Had nosy through Arcadia and Ultra here.

I own Slowdive and the now gone Dilettante.

But these. I’m afraid neither one floated my boat. But, that happens with every house. You can’t get along with every perfume.

Philtre. Notes include flower stems, cloves, rose, carnation, jasmine, resins, vanilla and black pepper. It’s about love potions. And after the samples arrived I realised I had bought this one before. Which is to say straight off it doesn’t sing on me.

I vaguely recall the commentary on Philtre when it was released related to it being at heart carnation – and I love carnation.

But, alas no. On me, this is pepper and clove rather than carnation. And it’s a bit too unctuous. Which maybe has to do with the Green-ade (ie, like a Caronade) that is heavy, honey-ish and very pongy. In other HGs, I enjoy the drydown. In this, along with the perfume itself, it was simply too much.

Tryst. Yes, I bought this for the name. It’s just too good. Notes include orange zest, green buds, neroli, orange flower and honeyed resins.

Tryst is pretty – but not as pretty as some of the other pretty perfumes I’ve sampled in the past few years. It’s more flower than fruit and I think it suffers because of that. Just a bit too sweet where it might benefit from being ever so slightly sharper.

And in this instance the pongy drydown emerges early and is a bit too much, IMHO.

In the end it is the HG I’ve tried which has the least oomph and presence. But, if orange flower is your jam it’s certainly worth a go. (Apologies for the huge bottle pic. I seem to be having trouble with some of the graphics I import these days.)

Hm, neither of these sounds too compelling. Slowdive and Dilettante however are fantastic. I’m so sorry about your bakery (I love a good bakery) but excellent that she’ll be taking custom orders.

I (and many others) will miss her. That town has a number of cafes and cake bakeries but nothing like Sara’s. No more wonderful croissants, just mass produced at the grocery or slightly stale ones. Sigh.

  • Dina C. says:

Tryst sounds really good to me, Cinnamon. Thank goodness the weather finally took a turn for the better. You are a dear customer and friend to send off baker Sarah with flowers etc. like that. Sounds like everyone will be missing her! I also recently did a car wash and vacuum, but more pollen was quick to settle on my nice clean car!

    • cinnamon says:

If you love orange flower this is worth checking out. Sara posted a pic of the flowers (a number of lovely bouquets) and cards, but not of the boxes of chocs they also got. I’m still sad about it.

I need to go out to the car and do some spot cleaning. The birds are not helpful…

  • Tom says:

Ah Goldens. Such lovely dogs. My friend had two. And a Cadillac with a black interior. Well, black and gold.

I’m sorry your baker is taking leave but I have to say if she was delivering pastry during covid she might not only deserve a rest but maybe the Nobel Peace Prize. Wonderful of all her friends and customers showing the love- it may convince her to come back when she gets bored enough to candy coat the downsides.

I did try and liked some Hiram Greens. I am afraid that they kind of get lost in the noise.

    • cinnamon says:

Sara is a canny person — and kind. I expect she’ll saw a way to keep the business going but also understood that people need nice things during difficult times.

Dog floof gets inserted into crevices and unless you have a high-powered vac you’re looking at using tape. Not fun.

  • Jennifer S says:

Not a house I’ve explored except for a sample, if memory serves, of….something? Somewhere? I’d have to go looking.
Nothing like a good bakery. Dangerous if there’s little willpower involved though!
Love AE when the weather is warmer as I get the prettiest rose note from it!

    • cinnamon says:

      I do think it’s a house that’s worth a go.

As to the bakery it was a special place. I don’t see myself indulging as often any more.

  • Maya says:

I’m glad your weather has turned nice. Enjoy! We’ve been rainy with thunderstorm, flood, and tornado watches and warnings. April showers bring May flowers, right.
I’ve already mentioned that I loved Hiram Green until I didn’t and I’ve tried all his perfumes except the last 2 or 3. Maybe it is the “Green-ade”.

    • cinnamon says:

To be honest I hadn’t noticed it with Dilettante. Maybe it’s gotten stronger.

That’s some weather. Sounds unsettling. Hope it calms itself soon.

      • Maya says:

Maybe that’s why I really liked his first group of perfumes. The lovely Dilettante was one of my daughter’s favorite perfumes. I loved Moon Bloom and the first Voyage. For whatever reason the rest were not for me. The carnation that wasn’t, the rose that was sour, the violet that hid and on and on.

  • Portia says:

BUMMER about your bakery Cinnamon but YAY for a deep cleaned car. I’m such a scummo that the only time my car gets washed is when it goes to have panel beating done. Inside? I pick up the miscellaneous detritus if someone is traveling in the passenger seat. Otherwise it looks like a tip.

The birds have already had a go at the exterior, which I resent. It’s so satisfying to have the inside look halfway decent I won’t go so long until next time.

  • Musette says:

Dilettante! Now THAT was swooonalicious! I miss it.

    These two sound… okay…(?)

Sooo sorry about your bakery closing… but glad to know she’s going to continue baking!

    Croissants for YOU!

    • cinnamon says:

Her croissants are among the best I’ve ever had (and that includes Paris). I expect she’ll have a break and then let people know she’s ready for special orders.

  • alityke says:

Never tried any HG that I remember. Somehow it isn’t a house that calls to me. I wonder why some houses whisper sweet nothings to you & you dive straight in, whilst other can be playing the bagpipes in your ear really well & you still ignore them?

    • cinnamon says:

It is a conundrum, the house thing. Chanel leaves me cold, even though I tried to wear No 5 for a while.

    • Maya says:

alityke, you are so right about perfume houses! lol. I have noticed the same thing and finally gave up fighting it. Sweet nothings it is!
