Best Perfume – 2005 Edition

My best perfumes from 2005. These are all scents that were new to me and not just released in 2005.

best perfume 2005Guerlain Attrape Coeur – ultimately this scent is not for me. It is beautiful and stunning, but something of the animalic base or perhaps overdoing it when I first got it has put it out of my arm’s reach. But it is the best perfume for someone else because it is beautiful.

Serge Lutens Bois de Violette – Pure, beautiful, fierce violets, almost like a deep smokey purple violet lollipop.

Serge Lutens Tubereuse Criminelle — The name!!! And it packs a mean tuberose, but what is there not to love in this. It was my first Serge I fell for, but it has not been my last.

Serge Lutens Fumerie Turque, Rahat Loukhoum and POTL — the best perfume I wound up loving that I started out hating.

Caron Coup de Fouet — Easily the best perfume ever for me. The peppery clovey spicy smell takes me to my happy place. Smelling it on a jacket days after I’ve worn it just makes my eyes close and a smile to come to my face.

Gobin Daude Seve Exquise — The best perfume I cannot buy. Green sappy goodness in a bottle, Robin is right, there is nothing like it, and it is almost impossible to get. I vow in 2006 not to sniff or fall in love with any perfume that is this hard to find. Oh, who am I kidding, part of this is the hunt, the perfume prey. That and pimping it to our friends and family so other people we know and love share our obsession.

Flowerbomb and L’Artisan La Chasse Aux Papillon — These are the best “Completely Girly” scents for this year. They go on strong and bold and can be overwhelming, but when you’re wanting to be All Girl, you can’t go wrong here.

My Best Scent for 2005 — Santa Maria Novella Eva. This was close with Caron Coup de Fouet for best perfume, but there is something charming and lovely and refreshing and innocent about this scent. Not innocent in that affected “clean scent” way, but just in how it feels like fresh meadows and hay and outdoors and young love and a roadster heading south from Firenze. If Coup makes me smile and close my eyes, Eva makes me laugh out loud and believe that I’m really not getting that old.

Celebrities that Annoyed me most: Kirsten Drunkst, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie

Celebrities that Make me Laugh because they are an F’n Train Wreck: Britney Spears, Nicole Ritchie, Lindsey Lohan

Musical Recording I’m most looking forward to: K-Fed’s release of his rap single at midnight New Year’s Eve. It should keep me laughing into the New Year

Best Makeup Line: Giorgio Armani and Trish McEvoy, they are the ones I reach for daily

Best thingie for my hair: Kerastase in the pink bottle. Highlighted-hair ladies, this will keep you super-shiny when you may be a smidge over-colored.

Predictions for 2006:

Many more Caron Urn scents, especially Montaigne, Poivre, Farnesiana, N Aimez que moi, finding out if they will sell me the mondo bottle of Coup, like a vat, so I can just leap in it every morning after my shower.

I will find Seve Exquise in a bottle — no, in a case of bottles, all for meeeeee!

Idole de Lubin will arrive in January, and I will either instantly love it or hate that boozy fruity thing that has me worried every time people talk about rum balls when this perfume is mentioned

I will not stick within my perfume budget next year either

  • Patty says:

Oh, it’s so bad. I listened to it briefly, just couldn’t even take it as a joke.

Have you posted your story about Ms. Drunkst? I’d love to read it!

  • kristen says:

So have you heard K-Fed’s single yet? “PopoZao?” What absolute crap!

I was of course happy to see Ms. Drunkst on your list of annoying celebrities. I will have to tell you one day of my encounter with her in LA. 🙂

  • Patty says:

Oh, congrats, this is soooo exciting!!! The jarlings must be feeling much anticipation now. 🙂

  • Marina says:

Just to wanted to wish you Happy New Year and to report that The Mother of All Jars has finally been purchased and will be flying from England to join her little decanted jarlings

  • Katie says:

Heh, I too am looking forward to the musical stylings of K-Fed. It’s just… well, despite his website’s claim (he has a website! Hee! And if you look at the sourch code, he’s glomming bandwidth off Britney’s site. How appropriate) I know I can judge a book by its cover. It’s going to be wicked funny.

Another pick for Chinatown I see – it’s lovely isn’t it? I think I may have to invest in a full bottle soon.

  • Cait says:

    Dear Patty,
You are fabulous and so is your list. Your list makes me realize that I need to be independently wealthy so that I be a slave to my senses. Hell, I’m that already, but just doing it on the cheap. You are an angel for all your encouragement and sweetness to me, and I thank you. Happy New Year!
Cait:biggrin: Your bucktoothed emoticon of perfume, Cait

  • Patty says:

Robin! You’re back, yeah!!! Happy New year to you too, and hugs back. I think the most wonderful year ever is coming for you, you are so dear and deserve it.

M – we may need to talk “bottle split.” I am reconsidering Fifi, thanks to you, and thinking I have not given her a chance. I’m not quite ready for that ambery boozy Russe thing, though.

Jonna — BdV is a monster lemming and worth every sleepless I night had before I got it.

  • jonna says:

    Freakin’ Bois de Violette. *swoon*

This list is wonderful too. Lemmings! Lemmings! THEY’RE EVERYWHERE.

  • Marina says:

Yeah…I saw that. My heart stopped beating for a second there…but I just cannot do it at that kind of price and postage. Fifi will be bought first, then Fem du Bois, The Mother of All Bell Jars 🙂 Then only Ambre Russe. I just hope that no one buys it at that price and the seller is forced to reconsider her pricing behaviour :banghead:

  • mreenymo says:

Great list, Patty! And boy, do I love that Attrape Coeur thanks to you! I love it! 2006 will be spent testing more Guerlain re-issues and creations.

And as for Idole de Lubin, just let me know what you think, because I can’t wait to hear from you!

If I happen to stumble across a bottle of Seve Exquise, I will be sure to buy it for you. :bouncy:

    Happy New Year, darling Patty!

  • kyahgirl says:

    Happy New Year!!
We have Flowerbomb in common, and, even if it didn’t make my list, I still have a much adored bottle of Seve Exquise tucked away in my drawer!

    Laura 🙂

  • koneko says:

    hello!
Caron Coup de Fouet sounds wonderful! i think this is going to be something i will have to try out! 💡

  • Patty says:

Well, fair is fair, Miss Marina, and that same seller has a bottle of Ambre Russe up as well.

  • Marina says:

I promise. I will hunt for Seve for you, whether I like it or not, myself. BTW, just thought I’d let you know that there is a bottle of Idole de Lubin on ebay at the moment. It is misspelled: Idol de Lubin. Just sayin’

  • Patty says:

Robin, if you don’t have a sample, I got the mondo gigantor bottle of Eva, I can send you some.

Tania — Spederline really are just entertainment beyond compare. Since you like my choices, you obviously have singularly rare good taste. 🙂

Annie – Ah, to go back in time and clear the aisles of all SE just a few short months ago. HNY to you too!

Mireille – Happy New Year to you too, may we all be showering in SE before 2006 is over!

Risa, do you have the IdL yet? I never got the sample so had to do an unsniffed bottle. I’m so hopeful. AC is so beautiful, but Vega seems to have my name on it more often, that and Liu are easier to wear. AC, I think, exhausts me because it is distracting.

Victoria, if you need a sample of Eva, just let me know, I’m happy to send some. I honestly didn’t know you could buy a bottle of perfume as big as the one I got of Eva after my first small bottle ran out.

Victoria O — Eva may not be for everyone, and I could see how it would go under the radar. It’s very simple and straightforward and old fashioned in many ways.

    Bela, thank you!

Trina, loved your list too, this has been so much fun to read and do.

Happy New Year to all of you!!! xoxoxoxox!

  • Patty says:

 Okay! But the deal is, if you love it, you have to help hunt some down for all of us. 🙂

  • Marina says:

I am fearless, Patty (and apparently shameless), so yes, I WANT!!! And I love you. :bouncy:

  • Patty says:

SSG, perfume budget – a fence around my purchases so my children can still go to college. Invisible fence for sure.

  • Patty says:

M, if I find a crate of those bottles, I’ll share, promise. So do you want to open the Pandora’s box of Seve? I’ll send you some. 🙂 But I have to ask first because if you love it, and you might not, I can’t be responsible for the wailing and gnashing of teeth. I’ll even throw in some Coup and FT for you to try. FT grew on me, and I seriously hated it, just had no idea why anyone would want to smell like a barbeque grill.

  • Trina says:

LOL at pimping out perfumes – that’s the *perfect* term for it! Your list is excellent!

    Happy New Year!

  • Bela says:

As a Serge Lutens fan I approve of your list whole-heartedly. 🙂

    Happy New Year!

  • Victoria O says:

Great List! I must try the Guerlain Attrape Coeur, I’ve just heard too much good things about it! Also I need to re-try SMN Eva. I admit it was *nice*, but I was on severe fragrance overload when I tried it. I will give it a proper test based on your recommendation.

    Perfume budget? What’s that?

May you have a beautifully scented Happy New Year!
    Victoria O

  • Victoria says:

I love your list. We share many favourites, and of course, now I have to test Eva.

May your predictions for 2006 come true! I wish you Happy New Year and best of luck in 2006 and beyond.

  • risa says:

    i love your predictions!

these are all marvelous, marvelous choices, and i’m wholly with you on Idole de Lubin. i’m starting to worry myself with my Guerlain love, and i have a feeling Attrape-Coeur will be another one i have to have…

i also have a hatred of Kirsten Drunkst, and it evolves over time – now it’s her teeth and their bad texture.

great list! hope you have a fantastic New Year and that the coming months are filled with delight!

  • mireille says:

I will find Seve Exquise in a bottle — no, in a case of bottles, all for meeeeee! yes, yes, yes, WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Happy New Year, P! xoxo

  • Annieytown says:

I love your list! We share a lot of the same fragrance loves!

My biggest regret was passing up a seve exquise bottle that was on sale at TAK. I am still kicking myself!

Have a wonderful new Year P!

  • Tania says:

Ooh, great list: Bois de Violette, Guet-Apens/Attrape Coeur, Tubéreuse Criminelle, Coup de Fouet (wow, I love that one), Chinatown — I love them. You are clearly a woman of taste and distinction. And yes, I too love the train-wrecks. Britney makes life worth living.

Best wishes for the New Year!

  • Robin says:

P, adore several on your list, and must wholeheartedly second your list of most annoying celebrities.

And now I must add Eva to my “to try” list!

  • sarasotagirl says:

What is this “perfume budget” of which you speak? Very confused, please explain!!

  • Marina says:

You will find a bottle (or a crate of bottles ) of Seve Exquise. I have every confidence in you. After all, you did unearth Idole de Lubin! What IS that Seve scent like…no, don’t answer that, I don’t think I want to know 🙂

I must sample Coup de Foeut as well. I should also give another chance to Fumerie Turque. I still can’t beleive it didn’t work for me. :banghead:

  • Atreau says:

Huge 2nd on Serge Lutens Bois de Violette, such a stunning fragrance!

I need to try Caron Coup de Fouet without a doubt, that sounds right up my alley!

Ha, K-Fed’s entire album should be a riot!
