The Precious… and other Pricey Pursuits

A Fragrant Angel sent me a sample of Jil Sander No. 4’s extrait/parfum some time back.  Once I sniffed that hyper-smooth lovely floral confection, I have been in mad pursuit of just a leeetle bottle of it for mine very own.  Almost a year later…. it is mine, Mine,  ALL MINE!!!!!  Notes of Light rose, geranium, peach, plum, galbanum, violets, jasmine, rose, tuberose, heliotrope, ylang-ylang, carnation, tarragon, myrrh, grey ambergris, moss, sandalwood, patchouli, vanilla, musk make up No. 4.

In extrait? Truly a beauty of unbelievable proportions — it’s just like the EDP, but smoother, richer, deeper.   No, don’t go looking in the Frip — this joins my Parfum Sacre extrait as teensy bits of things I have that I’ll probably never get again and must horde. If I ever get more than the little 7.5 mls, less evaporation, that I have now, I’ll think about not being a selfish little bitch about this. Best thing… I got it for about 14 euros. The overpriced shipping ofr 29 euros wasn’t a bargain, and I did start to pitch a fit about it, but realized even at that price, it was a huge bargain and I should shut up in case they decided not to send it to me.  Heaven on the cheap.

Speaking of overpriced things – and this one is not a bargain – I wish someone would have given me the heads up on senior pictures. Yoiks and gadzooks, that is some seriously expensive stuff!!!!  To make it worse, we decided to do a family portrait at the same time since we aren’t picture takers at all, and there are huge gaps in the photo-chronology of our lives.  A couple grand worth of pictures later… Now, they did some great photos of Harry.  At the beginning of the photo session, she was having him be all posey, and the first pictures are a little strained and fake, and she finally figured out who he was, and that the posing thing was not working, she then got him all relaxed and being himself, and then took some pictures that are just perfection — they totally get him, capture who he is right now, many of these could be his album cover if he ever decides he wants to be a guitar rock god instead of a chemist or physicist or photoshop expert or whatever other thing he’s enamored of for the moment.   We should have them back in a few weeks, I’ll post some for y’all to enjoy.  They also did some pictures of he and Alex, and I love those pictures. I have some when they were little — oh, hey, found it, there it is over on the left. I’m going to have Harry photoshop them together somehow.  I wish I knew where the last 20 years went.

So consider this the warning I didn’t get to all of you with kids years away from being a senior, start saving now for those pictures… find the right photographer, and they’ll give you something that will capture who your kid is in that moment as they verge on the rest of their lives.  It’s pretty special, and the thousands are probably a bargain.  I just don’t want to admit that yet.

Okay, back to perfume.  What one perfume, if you could find it in extrait/parfum, would you do anything to get?

  • CH says:

I would love a perfume version of Feminite du Bois. Or, a full bottle of SL’s Daim Blonde! Unfortunately, the budget never allows for it. DH does not understand, and the house we are buying will forever put us in the poor house! :((

  • cjj88 says:

    Hi Patty..

You are so right about children-they grow so quickly. I can hardly believe my DS is 6 now:)

Would love to see Fumerie Turque or Chanel Coromandel in extrait, Do you think you could make that happen…LOL.

    hugs,
    C

  • Kathleen Easton says:

Would love Chanel # 22 and # 19 in extrait. Also, pre-1980 L’Air du Temps. Was thrilled to try Apres L’Ondee in extrait. Gorgeous, but too fleeting for me.

  • Dusan says:

I say ‘nay’ to perfume extrait. No thanks, my skin’s already so scent-enhancing that it’d probably take me hours of painful scrubbing-off in case I wanted to switch on to something else. And now I’m jealous cos I’ve never tried Arabie! 🙁
Your boys are the cutest! Does H have a favorite frag?
Congrats on TPC, my sweet decant angel queen! The world is now a better place, heh 🙂

  • mharvey816 says:

For a long time now, I’ve had 3 fragrances that I have pined to own in extrait form: JS #4, Chanel 22 and Dior Poison. Thanks to an amazing eBay auction, I now have a mini of the JS #4 parfum. Yes, it is all you describe and more. And thanks to the upcoming Sniffa trip, I’m eargerly anticipating acquiring both the Chanel and Dior (a friend bought the Chanel there only last month and the Sephora.fr site confirms that they do carry the Dior). Then I will have my trifecta of divine scent. Ah, the smell of it.

  • March says:

Oh, P — they are soooooooooo cute! I can’t wait to see the new pics of Harry, either.

    I’m so happy for you about the JS4, that sounds amazing. I think I really need to schedule a trip to visit you one of these days, just so I can bask in your glory. And run my nose through your secret cabinets. Doesn’t that sound filthy?!?8-}

  • violetnoir says:

Hey, babe. I’m late as usual! 8-|

Congratulations on Harry’s senior year. It is, indeed, an exciting time. I should know: I just went through it. 😉

Yes, the senior pictures are ‘expensivo.’ As are the other senior accoutrements like college applications, the SAT, tutoring for the SAT, the senior trip, and…well, I don’t want to depress you, but it gets mighty pricey. Oh, and how about when you have to make that big deposit to the university of your child’s choice??? 😮 (That face is mine, looking at the bill.) Ah yes, fun times!

Congratulations on the Perfumed Court, Patty darling. I know that you and the other ladies will be beyond successful, and I wish you nothing but the best.

What is the one fragrance I am looking for? Well, actually it is Jil Sander No. 4’s extrait. It’s not for me. It’s for my best perfume buddy here in LA, and she’s been looking for it for a mighty long time. If you have any hints for me, please let me know.

    Hugs and love!

  • Amy K says:

Lauren used to come in parfum form, and I’d love to try that just for kicks but I’ve never managed to hunt it down.

    Adorable sons!

    • Patty says:

That sounds so lovely! I loved Lauren, I really should sniff it again. I know it’s one March re-tried.

      • CH says:

I remember Lauren – it was a sweet but unusual perfume. I believe it can be found around with some hunting. It brings back memories of the 80’s for me.

  • Lee says:

    *drums fingers anticipatorily…*

Love you, love your boys. As for extrait / whatever – I’m happy as I am fankoo very much.:-“

    • Patty says:

I know, me too! *keeps checking the international mail delivery* Come on, Love!

H may need your help on a video he’s doing for a scholarship. He hasn’t started yet, but I’ll have him holler when he gets it done!

  • carmen says:

    Patty,

Gorgeous kids ! Looking forward for the grand opening of P.C.

I will love to own all the Guerlains in pure parfum and to get my hands on those vintage Diors, I own a huge vintage bottle of Miss Dior, but will love to smell Diorella, Diorama , Diorling….. !

    • Patty says:

      Thanks, C!

Yeah, I’d love to find Diorella and Diorama in parfum, but so far, no luck. Were they both made in that strength?

      • carmen says:

Patty, loved the “C”! I have no idea if Diorama, Diorling and Diorella come in parfum strenght, Miss Dior does for sure. I was day dreaming, I love the old Diors so much ,and think of Guerlains like masterpieces, isn’t Jicky out of this world? love the EDT in that one.
I will be checking for some decants of the Diors I mentioned earlier, at the opening of the Perfume Court.;)
Iam sure it will be a much better expierence, “The Independence of Decants” wish you all ladies the best in your new store !:)>-

  • JenniferR says:

Well, I’ve got a slightly different hard-to-find wish. I so badly want the Feminite du Bois perfumed body cream. Again. I am still hoarding the last of my last jar — had I known, back in those days when you could buy it even at my local Meier and Frank, I’d have bought a case. Sigh.
Of course, I’m doing even more sentimental sighing over my own graduated senior. We didn’t do the senior portrait thing, partly because Laura REALLY didn’t want it, and partly because the only really good photographer for this kind of thing in my pretty small town is no longer in business. I couldn’t see spending that kind of money for the canned poses all my daughters’ friends wound up with. But I have seen the kind of thing you describe, Patty, and I’m so glad to know you have them!
OTOH, my older daughter and I have been taking absolutely rockin’ prom pictures lately, and since I made the dress this year, they are exceptionally special. 🙂

    • Louise says:

Oh, yeah, the FdB body creme is great! I got mine on ebay, it’s in good shape (and I just checked-there’s one now-just waaay expensive.) Hard to imagine Freddies carrying FdB.

    • Patty says:

That sound scrumptious! I think I’d like the body cream better than the perfume. Like POTL, love the cream, love/hate the perfume.

You must have a daughter about my son’s age!

  • Gaia says:

Some serious cuteness going on with those kids.

It’s funny- last night I posted about JS#4. I keep hoping to find it in parfum, but for now I’d be happy just the EdP isn’t going to be discontinued.
I wish L’Artisan would make extraits. I’d get many of them. Also Black Cashmere and all of the Tauers. Oh, and Parfumerie Generale! Can you imagine Tubereuse Couture in parfum? And for grossing out certain people (starting with my husband): Aomassai (insert evil laugh).

  • Louise says:

Aw, cute kids. Can’t wait for the updated pics.

We got some really great shots of my son at prom and graduation on our own (actually on my ex-husbands own) by pretending to not know him. That strategy generally works well in all public domains with him these days…

Given my skins voracious scent-eating tendencies, any extract of any fragrance would be good. But yes, I’d put some of the Exclusifs at the head of the line, and even a few of the Fords (perhaps Japan noir would lead that list).

  • tmp00 says:

    Awww- cute kids.

Can’t wait to read about the new Lutens of course…

  • Billy says:

Personally, I would love any of the Les Exclusifs from Chanel to come in Parfum/Extrait form. Can you imagine Coromandel or 31RDC? I’m (not-so)patiently waiting.

Same thing for the Hermessence line. Actually, most Hermes scents fade incredibly quickly on me. I would love to see how they could amp up the silky factor in Paprika Brasil.

    • Amy says:

Yeeeeeeees. 31 RDC would be gooooooorgeous in parfum. Put me down for some of that!

    • Patty says:

Mmmm… Bel Respiro in parfum, yum!

Agree on the Hermessences, most of them lend themselves well to a deepening. I think Ambre Narguile in parfum could almost kill me, though. Like a Nazgul on steroids!

  • Amy says:

I still have the tiny, beautiful bottle of Mitsouko parfum I bought in Paris last year that I haven’t yet opened. The time just never seems right… How silly is that?

  • Judith says:

They are adorable. Can’t wait for The Perfumed Court. Parfum choices are too hard–I’ll let you pick a discontinued Guerain for me! 🙂

  • Marina says:

Aww, they are so cute! 😡

  • arhianrad says:

Patty, lookin’ forward to the Perfumed Court opening….and I agree with you about those senior photos. Mine were taken seven years ago (I was part of the Class of 2000), and my parents spent a crudload of money…I didn’t even want them to. But I’m glad I have them these days. I show them to people and I’m like “Look! This is me at 18! Wasn’t I HOT?!?”

Anywho, I wouldn’t even want the parfum (because I don’t think they ever came in parfum), but I’d kill for any Gobin Daude bottles.

    JAR, too.

    • Patty says:

Yeah, I appreciate mine too. I was thinking this morning that there are three times you love your kids more than any other — when they are born, because it is new; when they are seniors in high school, because they are still your child and not completely their own person and full of promise and part kid and part grown; and when they have children of their own, because it all begins again.

Lord, I am going to cry like a baby when he graduates high school. His older brother cheated me out of that moment for him, and he regrets it now, so it’s extra poignant.

  • Elle says:

That’s wonderful that The Perfumed Court will be up soon!!
I would *love* to have Bois de Paradis, Arabie, Coromandel, No. 31 and Sous le Vent all in extrait form.

    • Patty says:

Arabie?!?! How did I not know about this Arabie love you had? Gak, that stuff is toxic! 🙂

MKK in parfum… Now that would be something worth having.

    • Lee says:

I love Arabie too – huuuuuge amounts.

      • Gina says:

I too love Arabie, I own a full bottle. I love knowing others love it too…

        • Louise says:

How can anyone not love Arabie!!! It’s just a basic instinct-type love for me. But I surely don’t need an extrait-one of its charms is its intensity. Yum.

          • Maria says:

I don’t think it’s intense. I love it just the way it is. What I enjoy even more is thinking about how outraged Patty must be to read about all this Arabie love. >:)

  • Silvia says:

This wet British summer of ours has made me fall for the wet earth graveyard rose of L’Artisan Voleur de Roses. But I would like more ooomph, think a EDP or extrait would do the trick.
And of course Parfum Sacre’ is still high up there on top of the wish list…
Look forward to The Perfumed Court !!! ^:)^

    • Patty says:

There are a number of the L’Artisans I’d love to see added in parfum. I somehow doubt they’ll ever do it, which is a shame.

Good luck on that Parfum Sacre! I’ve gotten it down to a fine art on how I search for that sucker, but even the, it’s taken almost two years to get just 15 mls of it!

  • Bryan says:

    Patty,
You have a beautiful family and they are lucky to have you. I understand the hording phenomenon…I think we all do. I still have to beg a taste, though. Ok, Ok, I’ll stop. If it existed, Carnal Flower in Extrait would be psychotically fabulous. I don’t quite know what I mean by that, but you get the idea. I would love to find any of the Les Exclusifs in parfum. Of those that supposedly exist, hmnmmm, probably the ancient Guerlains that are simply legendary, bordering on myth….but then, this is a comment, not a post./:)

  • Flora says:

Well, assuming that the parfum in question can be one that never even existed, I would like Serge Lutens Un Lys in that form, or even in a straight-up perfume oil. I would be the Lily Queen of all time.

Barring that fantasy, I want Cacharel to start making Anais Anais Parfum again – it was exponentially the best form of that fragrance and many years after its demise I can still smell it in my dreams. :((

I don’t know what the Perfumed Court is – what did I miss? – but I am sure it’s something wonderful….

    • Patty says:

Un Lys in parfum?@! Wow, that would be stunning. Okay, now I want that too!

Theperfumedcourt.com is going to be the joint decanting site of me, Diane (dragonfly), Nancy (fishbone) and Lisa (lisalaw/fleurdelisa). So we’ll combine all of our things into one great big decant/sample service site!

  • Maria says:

First of all, Patty, congratulations on getting the Perfumed Court close to being ready and for having such cute kids. I’m sure they’re cute in a much more grown-up way now. 😉

It’s great that you tracked down the object of your desire. Every fragrance is better in extrait if it was originally designed to be in that form. If Guerlain’s owners and directors were ever hit with a cosmic ray and they decided never again to make L’Heure Bleue in extrait form, I’d be haunting the Internet. I’d pay a lot.

So that I can pay a lot in such an eventuality, I’m undergoing a job interview Tuesday morning. I’m not great at job interviews. Patty, I know you’ll approve of the fact that I’ll be wearing Iris Silver Mist. Mmmmm. It makes me feel serene, and it doesn’t have much sillage. However, if my interviewer does catch a whiff of the scent, how can he fail to hire me? Wouldn’t you want to work around someone who smelled like that? (At least, that’s what I tell myself.) @-)

    • Louise says:

Maria-best of luck (not that you’ll need it) on the job interview. I am sure you’ll present yourself well, and will smell eminently hire-able. Cheers!

    • Patty says:

Good luck on the job interview! You smell wonderful, and they should hire you as soon as you waft in the door!!!

I hate to tell you about the bargain I got on L’heure Bleue parfum a while back — less than $100 for an ounce of vintage. :-“

    • Maria says:

Thanks for the good wishes! I survived the interview. They have full-time, part-time, and temporary positions. At the very least, the interviewer said, I’ll be on the waiting list. He’ll let me know next week. Here’s hoping for intense Spanish-instruction needs in the near future. [-o<
