Friday Guest Post: Perfume Slut

 By Matt

(Hey, folks — we’re kicking back for Memorial Day weekend, in our winter coats most likely, given the current temperature. Please welcome regular commenter Matt for this Friday’s guest post! Enjoy the scrolldown…)

Thank God I’m easy. I’m at that acquisitive stage of perfume obsession where I want to smell, wear, and buy just about everything. Niche, drugstore, designer, pretty much anything goes as long as it’s not Acqua di Gio. Not that I have anything against that scent, honestly; simply everyone in my town wears it. Shopping here is limited and I could just never forgive myself for wearing Unforgivable. I want to stand out a bit and I really don’t mind standing out by smelling like the biggest skank in town. Everybody loves a slut, right?

Yes, I’ve learned so much in the past year, reading the blogs, seeing what people think, comparing this, that, and the other. But the biggest sermon the blogs and boards seem to preach is to never buy unsniffed and it’s the edict I manage to ignore the most. Maybe it’s the willful rebel in me, or just the greedy consumer I am. Someone just this week called me the Poster Boy for Capitalism, but really, aren’t we all just trying to keep the economy going? I am proud to say that I’ve yet to make a single unsniffed purchased based on The Guide; I’m not saying I won’t, it just hasn’t happened yet. Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez aren’t my devilish enablers; it’s March the Maleficent and Patty the Priestess of Purchases and dear, dear Lee (don’t we miss him?) and the rest of you merry band of rogues who lead me into temptation, much to the chagrin of my student loan lender and the delight of my credit card company. I buy unsniffed all the time. But it’s not my fault.

The crazy thing is, I’ve never regretted a single unsniffed purchase and I’ve made some crazy ones. That’s why I thank the good Lord that I’m easy. ‘Cause y´all have led me down some dirty back roads and I’ve loved every minute of it. I can’t imagine being without any of these bottles I’ve bought just because y´all stirred up a hunch in the base of my filthy little brain.

First and foremost, Yatagan–and I think a whole bunch of you are responsible for this one. First spray, I smelled nothing but beef stew. Second go round, “Dude, who’da thunk of using CELERY in a fragrance.” Third time’s a charm and I was ready to destroy the world. I loved it from then on and it’s now what I wear when I plan on taking sh!t from no one. Thanks to you all; I can’t imagine life without it.

It only gets worse. CB Musk Reinvention. Full bottle purchase, unsniffed. I loved it from the very first whiff. Thank you very much, March. You’re a prophet of skank and I owe you my soul if I ever get it back from the devil. I also need to thank tmp00 from PST for his glowing words as well on this one. Like him I wear it alone, I layer it with Yatagan, as well as just about every other scent I own. Just whenever I want to dirty things up. I’ve never received a single compliment on this fragrance and I simply don’t care. The first time my bf smelled this one, he asked me never to wear it again. You know, that’s only gonna make me wear it more.

Success with these two purchases and I felt like I could never go wrong. I couldn’t and I didn’t. Patty sold me on Bvlgari Black and I knew to expect something weird, but I never really knew to expect a weirdness that worked so well on me. I actually do get a lot of compliments on this and it’s usually from people who have no interest whatsoever in fragrance. People might not have perfume, but we’ve all got tires, right?

Andy Tauer. I’m not gonna carry on too much because I always end up gushing like a giddy school girl. But I’ve got full bottles of all his stuff except Orris (damn limited editions, I’m always a day late and a dollar short). Pretty much all of those were ordered unsniffed thanks to some beautifully written reviews by Marina at PST, particularly L’Air du Desert Marocain and Lonestar Memories (Scentzilla’s review also helped sell me on this one). The new incense ones I did win samples of and Maroc I hesitated with my sample because of the “pour elle,” but I swear that’ll never stop me again. I love them all and he’s the only perfumer I’d buy unsniffed just because of the name on the bottle.

Did I mention Jicky? In the extrait? Full bottle purchase, again, unsniffed, and that one wasn’t cheap, my friends. I actually trembled a little when I hit the Complete Purchase button with that. March again with this one, but I’d grown to trust her since I felt she’d pegged the inner workings of my head and heart. My only complaint with this one is the bottle and stopper. It’s kinda cumbersome for a guy with clumsy fingers and no coordination or grace. I just decant it into a spray bottle and spritz away. See, I told you I’m a slut. I know I should be ashamed, but it’s just too darn fun.

Sometimes I throw an extra unsniffed bottle in my shopping cart just to get free shipping. I’m an etailer’s dream come true. Dior Homme I got just for that reason. Habit Rouge, it was Guerlain and I’d had two glasses of wine. Cartier Declaration–Lee loves it so it had to be good. There’s a bunch more, but I gotta stop; one should always hold a little something back, it keeps ’em wanting more. A slut’s credo if there ever was one.

But I keep on doing it. Luckily enough, I ain’t been let down yet. Surely a day of disappointment will come, but I’m not afraid. I know if I end up with something I hate, odds are, one of you scoundrels will be more than willing to give it a happy home, a loving haven for a rescued perfume, ’cause at the end of the day, you’re all just freaks like me. And I thank you for it from the bottom of my wicked little heart.

I never buy unsniffed because my budget can’t handle it, but I am the King of Decants. Given a choice between eating beans and buying a package of decants & samples, I’ll choose the latter (and with enough beans, I’ll need the decants & samples).

Always like to see someone spread the love for Andy’s works … a great perfumer & a nice guy. If I could afford it, he would be one perfumer I’d consider buying unsniffed (almost feel the same way about SL, but not quite). Here’s my take on his frags:

L’air du Desert – Have a 100ml bottle of this, probably his greatest. Dry, spicy, cedary, with a bit of a cold heart.

Lonestar Memories – Great take on leather, but I’m a Knize Ten fan myself. Would consider this decant-worthy for myself.

Maroc pour Elle – A bit too sweet for my taste, I’m afraid.

Reverie au Jardin – Love the lavender, but again, a bit too sweet for my taste. I do consider this decant-worthy (have a decant right now, in fact).

Incense Extreme – Love the CdeG incenses, but this one blows me away. Definitely bottle-worthy.

Incense Rose – Love this one; very complex and satisfying perfume. Reminds me a little of the way his experiment L’eau D’epices unfolded on my skin. Also bottle-worthy.

Andy’s got a few other things he’s working on that I’m really really looking forward to – a vetiver thing and a muguet thing. Who knows what will happen with his hyacinth-mechanic experiment (maybe the guys in the photo are wearing it, huh?).

    • MattS says:

My budget really can’t handle it, either, but I do without a lot of other things and otherwise keep my expenditures low.

Andy is my rock star/poet/hero and he does seem like the kindest man. I almost feel as though he’s my bespoke perfumer as his scents speak so strongly to me and seem to work with my chemistry so well.

L’air I feel is every bit the masterpiece it’s gained the reputation of being. I’m a huge fan of Knize Ten, but Lonestar takes me on much greater distances, both inner and outer. I struggled and debated with Maroc Pour Elle for the longest time, but when all is said and done, I get so much animalic skank that sings to my filthy beast. Reverie is his sleeper scent for me, it does have a dreamlike quality and though I don’t generally do cozy scents, this does have a coziness to which I respond quite nicely. Incense Extreme seduces me more and more with each wearing and will probably be the scent I end up wearing most in the heat and humidity of the oncoming summer. I fell in love with Incense Rose immediately and am amazed by by its complexity also. I dream of his L’eau D’epices as I never managed to get a whiff of that one, or the hyacinth and the mechanic. I did get a tiny sniff of his In the Metro experiment and fell immediately in love. The gentlest of florals with a humanness, like the smell of children at play in the spring. I too am excited about the upcoming vetiver, as well as the chypre he’s working on. Thanks for commenting. I love a fellow Tauer disciple.

    • Elizabeth says:

I just ordered a sample of several scents from the Tauer website (well, two of Incense Rose, which I adore)- it’s hard to believe that up to six 1.5 ml samples (4 Swiss Francs each) ship for only 4.5 SFR. I don’t think I could order them cheaper here! I am not ready/able to plunk down the money for a full bottle so for now, samples will be my friend. 🙂 The best part was a confirmation from Andy himself. 😡

Oh, and how did you get this picture of my husband, Matt? He wanted to know.;))

      • MattS says:

Incense Rose is amazing and Andy’s personalized touch is one of the best things about getting his scents. The signed cards, the hand-tied ribbon, the obviousness of a human touch. I love it.

Your husband’s pic? We have cameras everywhere…:d

  • MattS says:

The thrill of the surprise. I know.

Is this Ula? You know, I’m loving that Eau d’Hermes. Glad you didn’t like it, which sounds like such an awful thing to say. How are you enjoying the Aoumassai, which I’m sure I just spelled wrong.

How have you been doing? Hope your summer is great.

    • MattS says:

Whoops. This was supposed to go up above in response to Zara. It’s been a long day…

      • zara says:

hi, yes, that’s me 😀 the aomassai is just great on me, a gem in my humble collection. (so, i’m glad you didn’t like it hehe 🙂 do you remember the samples you sent? well, the tann rokka, a definite keeper, i’m eyeing a FB, have to have it, on me it turns out just perfect, the drydown a perfect, soapy-marine clean scent, plus i like the skanky ylang ylang. to my surprise, i also liked the CB’s, i’d even wear the library stuff, and the memory of kindness, well, in a sick way, i like it, reminds me of my mother’s garden, the awful tomatoe leaves…heh.
hope to see your guest posts more often 😀

  • zara says:

i’m so glad someone touched this topic. and i am guilty, guilty as hell, too. i’ve told myself (more than) a couple of times not to hit the ‘buy’ button, not to browse ebay, but hey, you now our kind. just the day before yesterday, i did it again, weil, antilope. somehow, i indulge in the surprise element that comes with it, will i love, hate it? sort of a game, you know. apart from one (you know, the eau d’hermes), no complaints whatsoever. i guess, i’ve become a habitual offender :-\”

  • minette says:

actually, you have pretty rarified tastes for a slut. there’s nothing on your list i, a fellow scent slattern, wouldn’t wear. sounds like you know your tastes – so congrats, and keep up the good work!

    • MattS says:

Thank you. Don’t get me wrong, there’s some drugstore cheapies that I’m mighty fond of that some might cringe over. This slut doesn’t discriminate.:d

  • March says:

Hey, looky — lots of comments! 😡

My unsniffed purchases tend not to go well, so I try to avoid them. Am so glad to have encouraged your love of CB Musk! And you were probably over there yesterday egging tmp00 on to wearing Eau d’Hermes to work, weren’t you?!?

Hope you have some fun weekend plans.

    • Anthony says:

I know I was 🙂 egging him on, at least 🙂

    • MattS says:

Hooray! Yeah, I was egging him on. He should wear Eau d’Hermes anywhere. Anyone should. I don’t really like to respect those office rules. Luckily, my co-workers just find it kind of amusing. Except when I wore Borneo. I thought they were gonna throw me into a volcano. Oh wait, that’s for virgins. I thought they were gonna stone me. Did you see I “accidentally” layer Ed’H with Jicky? Gloriously, intensely, over-the-top skank. The smell of a wealthy whore. I loved it.

You have a great weekend also. Thanks so much. Hopefully, I’m gonna be off on Sunday (let’s all cross our fingers and say a little prayer) so I can drink free beer and listen to a little bluegrass/rockabilly/honkytonk. Otherwise, I’ll be working. And I’ll wear Borneo, just to be an a$$hole.

      😡

  • Dusan says:

This post was such fun to read, Matt! I seem to be in minority here, though, since I’ve only made two unsniffed purchases but I’m sure you of all people will understand one’s fears stemming from one being on a student budget 😉 Granted, the perfumes I bought were costly but well worth the money and, more importantly, came recommended by a blogger friend. So, thanks to Vika of Boisdejasmin, Chergui and FT are now among my most cherished fume babies.
I should also mention that courtesy of some divine bloggers/commenters, an insane number of samples and decants have the potential of one day becoming FBs.
And hey, kudos for wearing whatever you darn like!

    • MattS says:

I understand the budget issues completely. If I didn’t have this perfume habit, my student loans would be paid off and I’d probably own my own home. Chergui is an awesome unsniffed purchase. If I can ever finagle another bell jar, that will probably be it.

  • Elizabeth says:

Oops, that was meant to be a reply to Matt in my first post.

  • Anthony says:

Brilliance! This was a fantastic article… literally, our experiences have been amazingly parallel… I suppose it’s the same for all of us perfume sluts. Just when I think, “Ok, really, try to get at least HALF way through SOMETHING before buying another one!” That just never seems to work. Thank God for the Perfumed Court because these days, for my eager nose, it’s all about the experience , and not the owning. I love having read the amazing prose written by The Posse and PST, etc, and then experiencing it first hand! Have you tried Monocle Scent One Hinoki by CdG? That might be my one and only unsniffed purchase. Thanks again for the article! Great reading.

    • MattS says:

Thank you so much. I’m embarrassed to say that I have scents that I love and have only worn once or twice and still find myself ordering more bottles. It’s really the fault of all these blogs. We cannot be held responsible.

I haven’t tried the Hinoki, but I could easily see it being an unsniffed purchase. It’s almost like the Incense Series Part Two.

  • Elizabeth says:

yes, that first moment when I spray it will be scary and exciting. The only question is whether it will become a daily scent or one I save for special occasions.

    • MattS says:

There is nothing like that thrill of tearing open the box, tentatively spritzing and getting that first whiff…wow, I sound like a junkie.:d

  • MattS says:

Hey love. You know I have to know what it was that Just Couldn’t Exist Anymore.

Enjoy the holiday! Someone have a cocktail for me; I’ll be working my ass off!

  • Suzanne says:

Matt, your flirty, playful way of writing is a wonderful match for the Posse. Hope to see more of your posts! Like you, I have made an unbelievable number of unsniffed purchases based sheerly on blog reviews, but somehow, magically, almost every one of them has worked out. It’s pretty amazing when I think about it. I can think of only three things that didn’t (Knize 10, Frederic Malle Le Parfum de Therese, and Ineke Evening Edged in Gold).

By the way…Yatagan, oh yeah! Be still my heart!

    • MattS says:

March and Patty are great and I think every bit as bawdy and rowdy as myself. I’ve tried to order Knize 10 probably fifty times and it always seems to be sold out or on backorder (I’m an impatient slut, too. I guess most of us are). I love it. And Yatagan, it’s amazing how unwearable I first found it and now could wear it for almost any occasion. Maybe not Easter church service. But just about anywhere else.

  • aelily says:

Great post Matt, and thanks to March for the Friday morning pick-me-up pic. A few weeks ago March did a post about being a perfume vagabond, and I thought Yes, that’s me! Then a few weeks passed and the temptation to buy got too great, so I thought, I’ll find some minis that I like and that aren’t too expensive. Then I found a bottle of Annick Goutal’s Eau de Monsieur for ridiculously cheap, and March had just blogged about how much she liked and how TS had given it four stars in The Guide and …I bought my first bottle unsniffed. And I’m very happy with the purchase, thank you March. So now I’m somewhere between perfume vagabond and slut…
BTW March, if you are looking for Eau de Monsieur, check out Beautyencounter.com
    Happy Weekend All!

    • MattS says:

A great holiday weekend to you also. Enjoy and remember that sluts have more fun. Temptation is there to be given in to.>:)

  • MattS says:

You and March are my Moses and Harriet Tubman leading me to the Promised Land of Skank. Freedom feels so good…

  • Bryan says:

Hilarious post, Matt and I loved every inch, I mean bit of it. I admire your ability to ignore what other people say/think about your purchases. I love that you wear the scents for YOU and only you. I try to do the same, but I have been told on more than one occasion that I smell like an old lady. That just makes me smile and reach for more vintage. I love me some skank too….muscs kublai khan is the emperor of skank. Thanks for the wonderful post.

    • MattS says:

Thanks Bryan. Usually if someone describes a scent as smelling like an old lady, chances are, I’m gonna love it. Skanky old lady is even better. I wonder what the set of the Golden Girls smelled like? MKK is in my top ten and the only SL bell jar I own; I’m trying to remember if I tried layering it with CB Musk just for the sheer perversity of it. I know I considered it. Surely I would’ve remembered; I guess even a slut has his prudent moments.

  • mikeperez23 says:

Great post Matt – I agree, nice to hear from the ‘boys’ ever-so-often, even though March and Patty always keep it fun anyways.

I must say that I am so overwhelmed with samples now (probably more than 50!) that buying bottles blind is just not necessary. Yet.

Last blind buy bottle was…oh let me think…Vetiver Extraordinaire by Frederic Malle. Loved it!

As for being a fragrance slut – well, I can relate. I like to call myself fragrantly promiscuous. 😀

    Holla!

    • MattS says:

Thanks Mike. I always enjoy reading your posts on Basenotes. Somehow, I find samples more overwhelming than bottles. I’ve got so many that I haven’t had time to experiment with, when it’s so much easier to just pick up a bottle and spritz. “Fragrantly promiscuous” I love it. You’re so much classier than I am.

  • Patty says:

    to my fellow slut! 🙂

Great post, I’ve got a really, really long list of stuff I’ve bought because of blog recommendations. It’s ridiculous, but very few of my unsniffed lemms have been horrific!

    • MattS says:

Cheers, my love. I usually read and research enough about a scent that I’m fairly certain I’ll at least like it. Plus, I’m easy. Arabie and POTL are the only things I’ve ever scrubbed. You and Carmencanada and LT and a few others have caused a bit of obsession with PdN. I just ordered four bottles, all unsniffed. Hell, they do 30 ml and there was a 25% off code for BeautyHabit. That was just being practical, right?

  • Flor says:

Great post! And thanks for the great picture to brighten up my morning. :d/

I have had very good luck with my unsniffed purchases. Believe it or not I bought Apres L’Ondee unsniffed and it has become one of the big perfume loves of my life!

    • MattS says:

Thanks so much. I’ve got a decant of Apres l’Ondee on the way; it may actually be sitting here beside me in this unopened package for TPC. I tried to be good last week and just order decants, which worked for a day or two, but now what if I fall in love? Too many great Guerlain’s in one’s shopping cart and one could end up in the poor house.

  • monkeytoe says:

    Thank you for the post.

I buy unsniffed once in a while and it usually works, but maybe I am slut, too. Recent unsniffed buys: M7 Fresh (excellent, especially in the Miami heat), Caron Pour un Homme (there were no testers in my town, but how could this be wrong), and Mitsouko EdT (ugh, Aqua Net and DEET and nothing like the few drops of extrait that I have).

    • Kim says:

great description of Mitsouko in edt – what is Guerlain thinking? Maybe try the edp – I find it lighter and peachier than the parfum and very wearable even in hot weather. I got my edp from Costco of all places, just over $50 so almost free!

    • MattS says:

I’ve never tried the original M7 or Caron Pour un Homme, but have always wanted to and could easily see myself ordering them unsniffed. I’ve certainly lusted for them for the longest time. I’ve only ever done Mitsouko in the extrait and it was so perfect, I saw no need for any other form.

  • Disteza says:

Whomever chose the pic, thank you for causing me to snort my morning tea! Guess that’s what happens when your man’s been out of town for 2 weeks.
Anyhow, I applaud your success amongst the unsniffed–for me there are so many that I want that I HAVE sniffed that I can’t justify buying something out of the blue. I’ve been trying to focus on getting the bottles on the list (which is constantly in flux what with the changeable nature of my moods, weather, distribution, etc.), but I find other things that deserve my money more. You know: bills, new tennis shoes, a new dress for feria next year, whatever. At this rate I’m only acquiring one new bottle a month.
    :((

    • MattS says:

I’m trying to swear off all further scent purchases until September, but I’m not sure how that’s gonna go. I should just buy decants, I know, but somehow Greedy Matt likes having a shiny full bottle.

Thank March for the pic; it could’ve a been a lot worse had I chosen it.

  • Musette says:

    Matt,

LOVE the post. Thanks for a great Friday read. I confess to never buying unsniffed because I already owe the Earth…my fault is going back to frags I hated the first time…..and STILL hating them. Luckily I rarely do it full price. By now, everybody knows of my desperate need to revisit Aromatics Elixir from time to time…and everybody knows what a house-fanner it is for me. It’s like a sickness…..it keeps calling, I keep coming…and it keeps smacking me right in the nose!

    >:)

    • Musette says:

Huh! That’s weird. I put a little ‘enabling’ comment in there for you and it disappeared! Maybe the devil ate it!

      xo

    • MattS says:

I revisit AE all the time, but always with joy in my heart. I do love it, have worn it when raiding other people’s perfume cabinets, but never bought a bottle. It’s just so uniquely itself. Unmistakably its own.

  • Marina says:

Great choices, all of them! Hopefully the day of disappointment won’t come soon, if at all.

    • MattS says:

You know, I may have jinxed myself writing this post last week. I got my first stinker at Marshall’s this week. Azzaro Vetiver. Yuck. Somehow I just assumed it being a vetiver, it would be at least wearable. The freshest, cleanest hairspray with just enough nutmeg and mace to keep me from flinging the bottle out the window. But, hey, I was only out $15. If anyone reads this and wants it, contact me, it’s yours for the asking.

  • Elle says:

Wait…the acquisitive, must have it all, unsniffed purchase stage…is just a stage? I must have missed that bulletin. 🙂 I do go through cycles where my interest waxes and wanes, but I still am madly in love w/ the hunt and so far this year have made a shocking number of unsniffed purchases based on blog and board posts – not all successful, but such is life.
*Love* the fact that you bought CB’s Musk unsniffed! SUCH a man after my own heart. Adore that scent and I’m also w/ you on ignoring your partner’s comments. Blessedly my DH is relatively anosmic, but I wouldn’t stop wearing something I loved even if he did complain. I might try to wear it more when he wasn’t around, but I wouldn’t be stopped. Oh, and I agree about Andy – I think his scents are pure genius.

    • MattS says:

Yeah, the greedy acquisition is something I can’t seem to get past…more, more, more.

Yup. CB Musk unsniffed. It was kismet and it’s one of the few bottles that I’ll most likely actually get around to having to replace soon.

Have I read in past comments that you live in NC? It seems like you were the one who lived in the Triangle area?

      • Elle says:

Yes, we live near Chapel Hill. And, as far as NC goes, all I have to say is thank GOD for the internet and a nearby airport so I can get to places w/ decent perfume shopping. Are you in the area?

        • MattS says:

I live in the Jacksonville/Camp Lejeune area. I’ll guarantee that the perfume shopping here is much bleaker than up your way. I was just wondering if there were any good places around there to buy scent…but I think you may have already answered my question. At least you have Nordstrom’s in Durham, which is better than our Belk’s. :-&

          • Elle says:

Oh, but you’re near the ocean! I envy you for that. Being near a beach trumps being near unimpressive shopping malls any day of the week, especially when I can essentially get everything I want from the internet. Anyway, nice to see someone else from NC on the blogs! 🙂

  • chayaruchama says:

    MWAH –

    • MattS says:

And a great big kiss right back at you, precious one. I do have my moments of restraint. Sometimes. I’m trying to be good now and save pennies for Chicoco Scentsation. Although I had a few weak moments last week.

  • Francesca says:

What a great way to start the day. Thanks, Matt. Such a great, witty, amusing post. Personally, I’d never buy a whole bottle unsniffed, but bravo to you for being so devil-may-care. And also reminding me I need to purchase some more Bulgari Black. Oh, and for the girdles-of-Hercules.

Elizabeth–I hope you will love your Annayake Miyako. It’s really exquisite. I can imagine one of the kabuki actors who specializes in women’s roles wearing this to pull him right into the essence of femininity.

    • MattS says:

Don’t be scared to purchase unsniffed; it’s quite the rush, really. I don’t play cards or do slots, so it’s my own little version of a trip to Vegas, without ever leaving the house.

    • Elizabeth says:

Francesca, I am so excited to have this scent now. I can’t believe the lengths I am going to to get it when I’ve never sniffed it – I am actually bidding for it on eBay France. It was quite fun to use my long-unused French again. I wonder if the shipping will be more than the perfume, though. 😕

  • Louise says:

Hey Matt! So nice to see you hear. We do miss the male Voice.

    Everyone loves a slut :d/

I still, maybe always will, buy unsniffed. All your unsniffeds were well-thought out choices, though, while many of mine are “what the hell”s. But many, many have worked out well. Vintage Vent Vert, Mitsouko parfum, Silences have been great. Others, not so much.

And my friends have sometimes benefited from my didn’t-work-outs. Why just recently, I was the recepient of a bottle of “Just Me” from our dear March, and she in turn got the bottle of Yatagan that I tried to love. But didn’t. I have only tossed one bottle that just could…not…exist…anymore.

    Have a terrific weekend, all!

  • carmencanada says:

I haven’t boughtanything that’s currently available unsniffed for a very long time, though a couple of years ago I used to…
There was Bulgari Black which I believe I was inspired to order from Luca Turin’s defunct blog. And what a kick *that* was. Immediately made it to the list of scents I couldn’t see myself without, ever. The same blog inspired a purchase of Paco Rabanne’s La Nuit on the basis of LT’s description: “smells like Tabu sprayed on a horse”. That was a less successful match.
Now the only unsniffed purchases are long-discontinued vintage classics I sometimes buy more for my perfume culture than for actual wear.
I’m very curious about Musk Reinvention though: I’ve been writing about musks on my blog but CB’s scents aren’t available in France so I’ve had to skip that one.

      “Tabu sprayed on a HORSE”?????=))

    • MattS says:

You and Patty are the main reasons I ordered PdN New York unsniffed. It should arrive tomorrow and I’m quite excited. I could probably get you a little sample of the CB easily enough. Just contact me.

  • Gina says:

Matt, you rock. Seriously, you do. I buy unsniffed often – not because of the guide yet – but because of March, Patty, Robin, and Angela (the last two are from NST). I will buy anything Andy Tauer makes unsniffed, too. The man’s a genius. I just bought Bvlgari Black unsniffed – I know I’m going to love it. I love weird, I love skank. Oh, and Yatagan – bought that unsniffed too!

Scary thing is that Scent Bar is about 5 miles away from me here in Los Angeles. I’m such a weirdo, I’ll buy online, unsniffed, after I read a review here on the Posse or NST. Damn.

So glad I’m not the only one. :d

    • MattS says:

Thanks Gina! You rock, girls named Gina always rock and you know they’re tough chicks who can kick ass. You and I seem to be unsniffed fragrance twins (tee-hee). Lucky you, living so close to LuckyScent. I’d be living in the world’s most fragrant cardboard box.

      • Gina says:

LMAO @ “Girls named Gina always rock”, so funny! What’s ridiculous is that though I live so close to Scent Bar, I still order from Luckyscent…I guess I just love to click that button!!! Unsniffed scent twins, we are!!!

        • Musette says:

You do? That’s so…..different from what I would be doing, were I to live 5 miles from Scent Bar. See, they would be dragging and pushing my moaning, drooling, oversampled self out the door….every week!;))

….or maybe every day…who can tell?

And Matt, I’m thinking you’d be under the bridge? Imagine the delight of those crossing overhead…….(Mavis! What IS that heavenly smell?) ;))

          • Gina says:

I know, Musette, it’s weird. But it’s hellish traffic, what would normally be a 15 minute drive turns into 45…then there’s the parking nightmare. I wander in there from time to time…if I have a job on that side of town, I’m alllll over it.

          • MattS says:

I could see myself as a Billy Goat Gruff.

  • tmp00 says:

    Awww!:x

I helped to make you buy CB musk unsniffed? Well that’s appropriate since I think it was March’s review and the fact that Marina found it nearly unspeakable that caused me to buy it blind.

    I have never regretted it.

Billy, no offense taken; it is nice to hear another male especially since Lee, Bryan and Kelley have sadly abandoned us..

    • MattS says:

Whoops! I left a comment for you way on down the line a bit. I’m on my work laptop, which is slow as Christmas and a p.o.s. BTW, loved your Eau d’Hermes post yesterday.

  • Billy D says:

Just wanted to say great post; it’s nice to have another male voice back here (I haven’t forgotten about you over at PST Tom!). I don’t know if I could ever do a full bottle unsniffed, unless twere incredibly cheap, but back in the days when ebay accepted decanters, I bought a few larger decants of stuff that was just too good of a deal to pass up. I’m dying to try the CB Musk–unlike you though, my bf’s reviews do sway me.

PS: the pic is good and all, but come on, twinks–that aren’t even touching? Surely there’s a better photographic representation of sluttiness out there. I’m sorry, what blog am I on again?

    • March says:

Easy there, pardner! 😉 You can’t blame Matt for that photo, I picked it from the Posse archives. I don’t know if there’s a name for that triangular-shaped dip their abs take into their jeans, like a giant THIS WAY arrow, but there should be… <):)

      • Louise says:

        Oh, so you’re the >:)

        Why am I not surprised ;)) !

      • Billy D says:

Crap, you know I know there’s a name for that thing–something like adonis triangle?? It’s genetic. What scares me most about the picture is the complete lack of hair…no matter how low the pants go.

        • Francesca says:

          girdle of Hercules 🙂

        • Musette says:

I’m with you there, BillyD! I prefer a bit more grownup Man in my man, if you catch my drift…. you know who did the whole Girdle of Hercules to manly perfection (my opinion)?. The Spartan king in ‘300’ – you know, the one with the teeth and the beard. Now THAT was a GofH!!!=p~ Interestingly enough, the actor doesn’t look anything like that in real life, though I doubt he’s gonna show his Girdle on the red carpet.

wonder what scent the King of Sparta would wear?

        • March says:

Where IS the hair? Do they all have to look like 11-year-old girls? I mean, I don’t need some Planet of the Apes thatch, but still. I wish they hadn’t shaved off their happy trails :”>

          • oblitterati says:

I suspect that these delicious young gentlemen had a little more fuzz that was digitally removed so as not to disturb the delicate sensibilities of all the 14 year old female fans of the brand’s patented muffin-top jeans.

    • MattS says:

CB Musk is either love it or hate it. But if your tastes lean toward the skank side, you’ll quite possibly love it.

Thanks for the welcome…and the skinny A & F boys aren’t really my type either. But thanks to Abercrombie and Fitch catalogues, there’s soft-core porn available for closet cases round the world.

I actually couldn’t wait to see what image March would chose for this post.

  • Elizabeth says:

I just bid on a full bottle of Annayake Miyako unsniffed, thanks to raving reviews…I am sure I will like it. I have never done a whole bottle unsniffed, but I think it will be happening a lot more from now on. If my bank account allows, of course! Then again, I am spending as much on samples as i would have on a few full bottles by now…

    • MattS says:

I’ve never tried that line, but I say, “Go for it!” The greatness of the unsniffed purchase is the thrill of the gamble.
