Monday musings: Amouage for three, please

AmouageOnce in a while, it’s fun to play those “what if?” games. For today: What if a very generous perfumed fairy godmother showed up on your doorstep and offered to give you three bottles of scent. The only catch? All three have to be from the same house and the scents have to be in current production.

So today let’s play with Amouage, in honor of their recent U.S. release of the gorgeously yellow bottled Sunshine.

I’ll go first. Right off the bat, I know I’ll have to have Memoir Woman, Interlude Woman and Lyric Woman, no wait — Ubar. But, but Lyric is so … Oh, dear, controversy already and we’ve hardly begun. Well, at any rate, all have really done right by my often-quirky skin and I enjoy immensely what each brings to the table.

Memoir, whose notes make it look like the kitchen sink scent of Amouage, rolls out a wonderfully absinthe-y, woody-floral-incense-y mix that seems to be a little bit of everything and is ever-changing, much like a kaleidoscope. The body cream brings the same kind of burst, but dialed down to a softly muted color show.

Interlude Woman’s twists, turns and gyrations give me an intellectual relationship with my wrist and really make me appreciate the complexity and thought the perfumer and company put into it. Never a dull moment when Interlude is in the house and on the skin. I never want to be without this stimulating, thought-provoking perfume.

My third choice originally was Lyric Woman, an amazing scent that Suzanne, a lovely perfume pal brought to my attention. It’s such a wonderful, richly spiced rose, and I love the body cream as well (waves to Musette who turned me on to it). Having Lyric on my list is really saying a lot, considering I’m a reformed rose hater.

But then Ms. S. sent Ubar sailing into my orbit. One spritz of this and I was swooning. Something about the interplay between the lemon, LOV, jasmine and sandalwood just lit up the pleasure center of my brain like the Fourth of July. This beauty smells like nothing else I’ve encountered and it has a grandeur about it that pulls me in every time, even more so than Gold. So the decision is in: Ubar has unseated (but not without a scuffle) Lyric Woman.

I have other Amouage scents I really, really like, and I see the ones I didn’t choose giving me dirty looks. I’d hate to be without those lovelies, but the fairy godmother says a limit of three, please. 🙂

What about you – what would be your three-fer from Amouage?

  • Jan says:

    Many thanks!

  • Diane says:

If you are looking for a green Amouage, try Reflection – reminds me of cucumbers and watermelon on a spring morning.

  • Jan says:

My body gobbled up LYRIC; wore it all year, wore it everywhere, wore it to bed . . . none left. And then winter came, the cold of winter, and I went to the Church of FATE . . .the push, the pull, then the dive into a complex layered deep inchoate pool of scent . . . like someone kept you warm by the fire until the earth warmed up again and you start yearning for something green. I have not found my green Amouage . . . but now I have some of your ideas ideas and I will seek.

  • Diane says:

I’ve tried 11 (got a sampler set), and my favorites are Beloved and Dia. Fate or Lyric would be a distant third.

    • Ann says:

Hi, Diane! Excellent that you’ve tried 11, that’s quite an accomplishment. I’m so glad you mentioned Beloved; I love it, too, and had almost forgotten about it (guess it’s because it is (was?) a Bergdorf exclusive and you don’t see so much of it out there). Thanks!

  • Musette says:

Hi, sweetie! You know me and Amouage. Mine would be Gold, Dia and…..Lyric! Couldn’t get through without those 3 beauties! xoxoxoA

    • LaDona says:

Isn’t body chemistry funny? I went digging through my samples and found some Dia, which, on me, smells like soap! I feel I’ve been robbed!

  • Undina says:

Love Amouage! I have Ubar and Memoir already, so the next 3 would be Gold, Dia and Lyric.

  • Brooke says:

My favorite Amouage is Ubar! Followed by Lyric Woman and Homage Attar

  • Oohh there are enough that I haven’t tried that I’m not really sure.. I think maybe Lyric Woman, Memoir Woman and maybe Epic Woman.

  • Tara C says:

I have all the Amouages I love: Ubar, Memoir, Fate, Beloved, Lyric, Epic, Interlude, Gold and Jubilation. But I would be happy to pick 3 Kilians!

  • Leezie says:

I generally prefer the men’s to the woman’s. Interlude Man, Journey Man and Sunshine.

  • LaDona says:

I don’t have enough experience with Amouage, but I could easily do Tauer, Lutens, Volnay, Histoires, Odori and Xerjiss! Oh, the places I could go! (Parroting Suess!)

  • Tatiana says:

I thought this would be easy, lol. Lyric, Jubilation 25, and Memoir. Gold, Memoir, Gold, Memoir, Gold. Wait, can I just include 4?

  • Diana says:

For some reason, the Amouage line doesn’t thrill me. (Guess I’m lucky that way–saves $$) I could easily pick 3 from Serge Lutens, F. Malle or L’artisan tho.

  • Maya says:

I have tried quite a few and don’t like any. The last one, which came well recommended, was OK, but when I asked friends what they thought, they held their noses! Not very mature, but funny. LOL…..So i’m leaving Amouage behind.

  • sherobin says:

Can we choose attars? If so, my choices would be Tribute and Homage. And my favorite non-attar from this house is the magnificent and regal Dia.

  • Neva says:

Mmmm, Amouage is my favourite perfume house but I own only a few decants so far. Everybody – guess why??? 😉 My choice is Epic, Beloved (both Woman) and Library Collection Opus I. The next would be Jubilation XV Woman, but it should be just three, right? LOL

  • FeralJasmine says:

The only Amouage that works really well for me is Lyric, so I guess I would choose Lyric Woman and two Lyric body creams. Oh, how I would love to have a supply of that body cream…

  • Julie L says:

I wish I knew , but have never tried any! They all sound legendary though, from the swooning descriptions I read!

  • Portia says:

    GREAT question today Ann,
May i please have Interlude Man, Jubilation 25 Extrait and Epic.
That should round out the collection nicely.
    Portia xx

  • Rina says:

Sadly, Amouage doesn’t do it for me, but if you play with Frederic Malle, Kilian or Tom Ford, I could contribute!

  • Amouage attars are available in limited quantities from Zahras Perfumes – http://perfume.zahras.com info@zahras.com
So samples of Amouage sprays are also available.

  • eldarwen22 says:

Scarily enough, I have all the Amouage ones that I want. Those are Lyric, Gold, and Dia. Now, if it were Serge Lutens, it would be a little different with Sarrasins, De Profundis and Iris Silver Mist.

  • Suzanne says:

I’m so glad I could help you down the Amouage path, Ann. Hm, playing your game, I’d have to go with Amouage Memoir Woman, Amouage Dia Pour Femme and Amouage Opus III (since I already own several that are my favorites, these would be my next three if money were no object). Oh, and I must thank you, in return, for turning me on to Memoir Woman – so uniquely beautiful!

  • Jennie says:

Definitely Dia, also Gold, and then …. probably Ciel, but I’d love to try Sunshine too.

  • Anne says:

Hmmm. Jubilation 25, Ciel …. and Dia. I love Gold but it fades after half an hour on my skin (yes, I know… Amouage is so light weight for me!) much as Ubar does. So Dia, which is similar to Gold and lasts a lot longer has to be the third choice. Ubar, alas, is just lovely but so fleeting. Jubilation 25 is so animally, warm and glorious. Love it on days when I am active or it is warm. Ciel is plain prettyand I am more likely to wear it than Lyric (man or woman).

  • AllGirlMafia says:

Funny you should ask. I’ve only recently. had the chance to sample this house. Last week Opus VI and tonight Fate woman. Both are very beautiful although Fate is doing something strange on my skin at the moment…we’ll see. If there were three others I could try they’d be Gold, Dia and Lyric.

  • Spiker says:

My sampling of Amouage has been a bit more limited, but I do love Memoir. Lyric is a nice second, and then I’m left blindly guessing for a third. I guess I’ll say sunshine. Maybe it’s just because of the bleak, cold winter that’s finally ending, but really, who couldn’t use a little more Sunshine in their life?

  • KirstenMarie75 says:

I winced in sympathy reading the line about the other Amousge bottles giving you dirty looks for being unpicked. Gold in particular. For me, as a rose lover, Lyric heads the charge. I’m intrigued by Sunshine, though questioning how the dry down actually would work. Patch and I often disagree, but juniper and papyrus? On a scent called Sunshine? Hmmm. Third one would be Ubar. I’m an LOV sucker.
