Freeway by 4160 Tuesdays

Hi there Posse Peeps! Freeway was popped into my hand last year by Sarah McCartney and I wanted to save it for a summer review because I imagined it being a perfect choice for summer spritzing. Then I bloody forgot to do it, so a year later I have my decant ready for a spritz or three. Sorry for the delay. Created with and for the Luckyscent crew in LA, one of 4160 Tuesdays most intricate and accomplished works.

Freeway by 4160 Tuesdays 2018

Sarah McCartney

Parfumo gives these featured accords:
Mandarin petitgrain, Orange blossom, Tobacco, Rum, Brandy, Cannabis, Woods, Vanilla

ORANGE! If there was ever a colour associated with a fragrance then Freeway would definitely be the colour of a ripe, juicy, sun warmed orange. It doesn’t smell like that orange fruit exactly but it does fit the look. If that’s not an LA analogue then nothing is.

I don’t get a real squeal of petroleum like the Histories de Parfums Petroleum but I do understand the feeling evoked, much less confrontational, prettier and infinitely more wearable.

Orange Blossom but not a soapy version, vanilla to sweeten the deal and a bunch of backing players that don’t really get their own spotlight. Maybe tobacco but I’m not sure if that’s exactly what I’m smelling.

Freeway is more than its pieces. It’s got that great carefree LA spaciousness that they all want you to believe LA is. Even though it’s only that for the wealthy and successful. Actually, Freeway doesn’t smell much like the feeling of being on a freeway, it’s much more the canyon drives and hills, the beaches and fresh squeezed orange juices with super sized breakfasts.

I can imagine Freeway fitting perfectly into the early creamy citrus, slightly tropical fragrances of Annick Goutal. It has that same plush voluptuousness. Excellent stuff.

Have you tried any of the 4160 Tuesdays oeuvre? Anything spark your fancy?

I like my Tyger Tyger (I e mailed Kristen and asked her to collaborate again and do Kyttie Kyttie to benefit the Cat Cafe in Ft. Lauderdale to benefit small cats) . I like Tyger Tyger a lot, but it is not quite a love. I do wear it, not super often because I will be sad when my 30 ml is gone because the process was so much fun. I bought Over the Chocolate Shop (blind buy) which I love. I’ve sampled probably 6 from her line and there is often something odd about them which doesn’t put it into the FB category. Maybe I haven’t tried the right ones yet. I shall keep trying.

I love orange – until I don’t. Same with orange blossom (Couvert des Minimes was perfection, though). I don’t think I’ve tried any of the 4160 Tuesdays, for no other reason than they’ve not been on my radar. The orange reference, though, reminds me of the other Luckyscent foray – Frank #2 (something tells me I’m boogering that up something awful…..) or it might be #3. Either way – it was a wonderful, tobacco-y orange.

      Hey there Musette,
4160 Tuesdays is a really interesting indie house. They are worth a sniff. A few of them read like really interesting accords rather than fully finished fragrances. Others are intricate and rich perfumes. I like that Sarah is constantly trying to push the boundaries and doesn’t think inside the boxes of what we already know.

I’m not keen on too much Oud.

  • Maya says:

I feel the same as Gina about 4160 Tuesdays. I also feel this way about Imaginary Authors. It’s OK though. There are plenty that love one or both of these houses and it frees up money and energy for me to find more houses/perfumers that I can love. Since I think Fragrance Du Bois Santal Complet is exquisite, I am exploring more of this line, especially the non-oud ones. I don’t like oud unless it’s subtle. Jin is right – Cow pooooooooooo!

      Hey Maya,
Sure, not every house, especially one as experimental and slightly off centre as 4160 Tuesdays, is going to resonate with everyone. I’m not sure Sarah even wants that particularly. It’s like she has this original taste that really works for some and leaves others cool.
There is so much diversity and choice in the frag world, sometimes it’s nice to find a brand that doesn’t speak to us. I get it.

I’ve tried six of 4160, and own a full bottle of Tyger Tyger. They always sound so good. But, I have not found them to be appealing to me, though I really like Sarah. I like Tyger and Rhubarb & Custard, but not a love. I didn’t like What I Did on My Holidays. They smell very synthetic and a bit conceptual to me. I also am not a big fan of frags that smell like food.

I own Freeway, it was one of my first 4160 Tuesdays purchases. I think what I like about it is it’s not a syrupy orange blossom, it has some grit in there. I don’t get booze, tobacco or cannabis, just the orange blossom, petitgrain and a very small amount of vanilla, plus whatever creates that petrol/grit sensation behind it all. It’s a great addition to my stable of orange blossom scents (a favourite note).

      Hi there TaraC,
Woo Hoo! Another fan! I’m so glad.
What different rides we get with Freeway. One of the things I love most about perfumery, the way our skins, brains and noses make everything smell personal and individual.
I think your love of orange blossom was known to me but I had forgotten. Do you have some other superb orange blossom recommendations?

I have the following: SL Fleur d’Oranger, L’Artisan Seville a l’Aube, Kilian Sweet Redemption, Vero Profumo Rubj, Hiram Green Dilettante, Au Pays de la Fleur d’Oranger Neroli Intense, plus some orange blossom accented ones such as Guerlain Mon Precieux Nectar and Dior Cuir Cannage, which I layer with orange blossom body cream to amp up that aspect. I also layer orange blossom cream under Carnal Flower because they go so well together. I don’t know what I’m going to do when my Couvent des Minimes orange blossom cream runs out!
