Cher: Eau de Couture

Hey Posse! Cher! One of the queens of style. An icon who has managed to stay relevant and popular through highs, lows and a fair smattering of mediocrity. Her original 1987 fragrance Uninhibited was a direct CHANEL No 5 descendant, all fizzy aldehydes and fruity space flowers over woodsy vanilla. One of my besties is a complete Cher aficionado who follows her concerts around the world and I found him a small bottle of it in the early 2010s, he has loved and cherished it. So, weirdly, in 2019 she decided that the world needed a new Cher fragrance, enter Eau de Couture.

I remember as a kid watching, and rewatching, the Sonny & Cher show and specials. Voraciously reading every speck about her and trying to copy her spectacular Bob Mackie wardrobe for my sisters dolls. In many ways I can thank Cher for my studying fashion and going on to become a drag queen. I think part of her appeal is that she always seems like an underdog, weird considering she has won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Also, the internet has her net worth currently at $360 million.

Cher: Eau de Couture

Cher Eau de Couture

Parfumo gives these featured accords:
Top: Bergamot, Clove, Neroli
Heart: Jasmine, Rose, Orange blossom
Base: Vetiver, Sandalwood, Vanilla orchid

Created by the man who brought us Amber Prada, Panorama for Olfactive Studios, Lovely by SJP and Ariana Grande Cloud; Clement Gavarry. I personally feel that the note list is a giant furfy. Sure I bet there are bits of these notes but what I read here is a generic, safe, modern nothing of a fragrance with nothing even slightly challenging. Far from the reality, far far.

Yet again Cher and collaborators have chosen to directly descend from a CHANEL perfume. Not the same. No. A very heavily influenced nod though. This time it seems the target is CHANEL No 22. Imagine a 22 where the huge aldehydic overdose is played against clove, instead of nutmeg. Still using rose as the lynchpin with lashings of white florals. The heart has been tamed and modernised and the dry down is far less tapestried, creamier and less chypre-ish. The aldehydes are the star of the show though and continue to pump their magic till the very end.

It is a powerhouse compared to so much of the modern releases and has extraordinary tenaciousness. Eau de Couture is a glam party scent, it gets noticed and is as sparkly and diva like as you can imagine. A perfect resemblance to Cher.

Have you tried Eau de Couture yet?

Hey Portia! Looks like Eau de Couture is a must-try: anything from the Chanel 22 gene pool is. I trust your opinion and boy, do I admire Cher!

  • Kathleen says:

I haven’t heard of this; however, I haven’t been to a store in forever! Is this a perfume you would wear Portia? I adore No 22. I used to love watching the Sonny & Cher variety show!

    • Portia says:

      Hey Kathleen,
Yes, I’ve been wearing it. Sadly, something in No 22 has been giving me headaches in the last couple of years. This has all the pizazz and none ofd the side effects.
      Smells great.

I have a precious mini of Uninhibited that I guard with my life. I adore Cher she’s such an icon and I’m very determined to seek this one out ?

    • Portia says:

      Hey Chrissyinoz,
Those Uninhibited minis go for SQUILLIONS nowadays. 10+ years ago they were less rare and only mildly expensive.

Have never seen this one in the shops but I really admire Cher. Great actress & singer, independent and feisty.

  • Cinnamon says:

Absolutely love Cher — she’s very much self made and marched to the beat of her own drum, and stood up for causes as well. Moonstruck is one of my favourite films ever and she was amazing in Silkwood, etc. I haven’t tried the earlier perfume release and can’t see myself being able to try either till our world changes. But I have a lot of time for Cher, so when I can I’ll have a sniff.

    • Portia says:

Yeah, Cher always seems to be the underdog. I don’t know HOW she manages to do that seeing she has been successful the whole way along in so many different areas.

    • Ariel says:

Unrelated: I received the sample you sent. Thank you!!!

  • Musette says:

I adore Cher because… well.. there’s Moonstruck.. and that Will & Grace episode where she graciously (and viciously) allows Jack to school her in how to sing ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’.. and because I always get the feeling she MAKES her life, y’know? Nobody puts Cher in a corner, baby.

Now I have to go find some of this, as I do love 22. Not as much as I love 5 (how could I?) but I do love it.

I didn’t realize she’s released another scent Portia! I was another one of those kids who watched the Sonny and Cher show and loved the glamorous Cher with her amazing costumes, fabulous wigs and great singing. I’ve always liked her acting best.

  • Ariel says:

I have not, but this post makes want to watch Mermaids again. Clove, vetiver, and vanilla orchid sounds like Charlotte, and all the rest is Rachel 🙂
