SERGE LUTENS ÉCRIN DE FUMÉE AND Dans Le Bleu Qui Pétille

The last two of the freebies from my purchase of that Bell Jar.

Écrin de Fumée is one that Cinnamon reviewed last year, so go and click on her piece to get the salient points (and enjoy her writing, as always.) I’m afraid I don’t have that much to add. It’s very nice and all, but I’d be lying if I didn’t write that it’s kind of a disappointment. It’s perfectly wearable, and if it were, say a flanker from Uncle Ralph or even a destined-for-Mary’s Chanel (Chanel Blah?) I would think “well okay then.” but if you’re going to slap the name “Serge Lutens” on there I am afraid I need a little more. In this case literally.

Dans Le Bleu Qui Pétille on the other hand is far more interesting. It starts off all Dryer-sheet fresh and fairly pungent with mint before becoming a lot more interesting with seawater on skin. The closest thing I can compare it to is it’s as if I gave myself a liberal dousing of MKK, went and danced my rear-end off, then went skinny dipping in the warm ocean. (If I did this using the body of a 24 year old ballet dancer with 4% body fat and abs you could scrub your washing on) The dryer sheets do pop back in every once in a while like Carole Cook and Barbara Rush in “Summer Lovers”, but like their characters they leave and leave you back to that Santorini sun-kissed salty flesh. Yum.

Both of these are available at the Lutens website as well as a various e-tailers for quite a bit less (what is up with that? I like bargains but am not sure why I’m getting them. Packaging changes?) I certainly could go for an inexpensive bottle of Dans, wear the heck out of it, then not be too crushed if it disappeared like my 24th year. What say you?

LOVE those Serge Eaus Tom. I have most of them but completely forgot to get them out last summer. BUM.
24! What a year! We made Priscilla, went to the Cannes film festival and I moved to London for two years of non stop partying and drag work around Europe. Some of my best memories come from that moment.
    Portia xx

    • Tom says:

Well my 24 wasn’t nearly as glam but it was a bit of a whirl. Somewhat of a waste, but fun..

  • Maggiecat says:

I’m still looking for a Lutens that really suits me – a few have been close, but not quite. Which is a shame because I truly admire his creativity and craft. And I love reading what you all have to say about them! Maybe someday….

    • Tom says:

I think everyone has a house that suits them. Lutens is mine. I’m wearing the new MKK and if I could curl up in my own chest and purr I would.

  • Musette says:

Huh. Well… your writing is, as always, fanFREAKINGtastic!

These two from Uncle Serge? Eh

My 24 year old body??? Yes, please. But body ONLY-I was distinctly… stupid at 24. Alas

  • Dina C. says:

Great reviews, Tom! Thanks for an enjoyable read. Makes me long for a beach trip and fresh seafood lunch. I haven’t sniffed these yet.

    • Tom says:

My friend and coworker (who never does anything for herself) has taken the first vacation in 15 years to Sicily and is enjoying the beach and the seafood. And I am not even jealous; she deserves the trip.

  • March says:

These … do not sound much like me; I’m generally expecting to be wowed if I reach for SL. I want some nightmare like Miel de Bois hehe. But I wouldn’t mind a return to my 24th year for a week in summer, as long as I could come back to now!

    • Tom says:

No, they weren’t he SL fireworks.

I’d like a return to my 24 year old waistline. But I suppose I could manage that by putting down the candy and moving my a$$

  • cinnamon says:

Ecume sounds so promising on paper … The other, Dans, I’m not so sure about though I really enjoyed reading your take. It is really pleasing Uncle Serge et al still send along a load of samples. Proper CS in a world of spend more but get even less.

    • Tom says:

I love that they send them, I just wish they gave us more of the choice of which ones

  • alityke says:

Initially I fell hard for Ecrin de Fumee. A dear perfume friend sent me a sample, a decant, then the dregs of her bottle! By then I got bored. I did think it was a return to form after a few bumps in the road.
You make the SL Eaus sound great, then I see the note mint & know it’s not for me.
I’m in the nearest big city shopping for mothers of the groom & bride outfits. Fingers crossed for a bit of perfume sampling

    • Tom says:

Those eaux aren’t bad at all.

Hope you get some sniffing in!

      • alityke says:

Just Chanel Exclusifs Comete. I’ve just published a quick review of the day & the fragrance on alitykescents.
Why are some SAs so far up their own fundaments they can only see their liver?

        • Tom says:

I always want to quote Edina with people like that: “You just work in a shop you know, you can drop the attitude..”

Now I am off to read the rest of your blog.

  • Maya says:

All this talk about SL lately has gotten me wondering whether I might like some of the newer ones, so I got a few. I was surprised that I liked them. You got me interested in Dans Le Bleu Qui Pétille and reminded me that I have never tried MKK. Those are the first two on my list and after I submit this, I am going to see what others I might want to add.

    • Tom says:

I have liked some of the newer ones. Quite a bit. I’d love to read how you found MKK
