So, part of my StC order from last time included a le labo that I have never heard of (well, I never said I had encyclopedic knowledge of these.) Looking on the interwebs I found came out at the end of 2025, but there seems to be nothing at the le labo website about it. Which would normally have me going after it like a dog after a frisbee.
CB I Hate Perfume Wild Pansy and AG La Violette are ones with violet that I have enjoyed and Uncle Serge’s de Profundis (although that is a little more Chrysanthemum than violet, not to mention long gone) and his Bois de Violette are ones that I love.
This one? I think I must have a block or something. Reviewers had written about the Aldehydes and violets and this and that but I got some washed out aldehydes (Chanel No 5 would just look at this disdainfully, grind a Gauloise under her pump and walk away) and not much in the way of violets/ Notes (from Fragrantica) are:
Top notes are Violet, Aldehydes and Rose; middle notes are Cumin, Incense and Saffron; base notes are Cedar, Amber and Patchouli.
I guess I get some of the saffron or the cumin in the slightly earthiness of this. Note that I write “slight.” It also seems like it really wants to go play-doh on me as some violets can (looking at you Caron Bellodgia), but thankfully doesn’t go there.
But it doesn’t really seem to go much of anywhere on me, unless I am not smelling something. But perhaps subtlety is something that I am unused to in perfume and this is too subtle for my neanderthal desire to smell pretty. Or smell of anything at all.

I promised a dog with a frisbee..
Since this isn’t on their website does not show this as being available I don’t know what the pricing is going to be. There’s a FacePlace page that’s dated 10/25/25 that reads that it will be coming “soon.”
I’m afraid I won’t be waiting with bated breath.
I don’t see it on the website so I don’t know the pricing on this one. I am assuming that it follows the rest of the line and is around $250 for 50ML. Don’t hate me for not caring enough to do the legwork.
Have you tried this? Do you like le labo? (I do, even with that silly “expiration date” and “mixed fresh” thing) Like violets? Discuss in the comments. My sample is from Surrender to Chance.
This just in: My neighbor stopped and asked at one point if I was wearing cologne. I told him I was and he said it was really pretty. So someone can smell it and is pleased. Maybe after a few tries I’ll smell it too..
This just in even more: I am smelling more of it and it’s quite lovely. Very quiet, but lovely. I want to say that it has something in it that I can’t place: something makes me want to say it’s like FM Dans Tes Bras, but while similar, aren’t quite the same. And I am too lazy to get my butt over to the FM store on Melrose Place to cadge a sample, since I never reviewed that one either. Well, I am too lazy to do it today, anyway. Stay tuned..

Iris 39 and Santal 33 are my absolute favorites, i love the Le Labo scent DNA and their way of making scents, this sounds interesting
I love several of their scents. the LA and Texas exclusives (although the whole
city exclusive” thing is as silly as expiration dates), the Patch and several other are winners. The “mixed fresh” thing? Not so much.
I wonder what notes are combined with violet notes that read “ old ladyish” on me?
It may be the powdery notes of heliotrope and iris, but it could also be that the violet scent was used in most makeup for many many years – powders, soaps, creams, lipsticks…….Depending on your age, it would be the scent around mothers and grandmothers.
Thanks, Maya.
Yes, thank you Maya!
That makes sense.
I get something kind of mushroomy myself..
ROFL
The last Le Labo that I tried was either Aldehyde 44 or Labdanum 18. So yeah, it’s been quite a while since I have tried anything from Le Labo. Might have to start looking at them again.
Aldehyde 44 is a favorite. I have an eensy bottle from the last time they opened up the “City Exclusives” (which I guess are exclusive only 11 months out of the year..)
I haven’t heard a thing about this! I have a decant of Santal but Le Labo has never really been a love of mine. Their performative in-store “fresh from the tap!” nonsense irritates me more than it should, and as Portia mentioned, I kept trying weird things that didn’t match the notes.
That’s a true irritant… plus it actually VARIES from shop to shop
:: had a couple iterations of Aldehyde 44that were palpably different::
I think that “fresh made” thing is so stupid. I want my OJ fresh. I want coffee made fresh.
also there’s a lot of room for user error in these that could lead to different outcomes.
Hey Tom,
I agree that violets are a great note in scent. Two that I thought of that I’ve got were Balenciaga Paris which is a contemporary violet musk, and Guerlain Meteorites which is a powdery violet scent. I’ve also got an old bottle of Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel which has violet and violet leaf — a beautiful masculine scent from the 80s my dad used to wear. I hadn’t heard of this Le Labo violet scent. Thanks for the review!
Omg! LOVE Grey Flannel ! Didn’t realize violet/violet leaf were notes!!!
I need to revisit this. It may be a “cheap and cheerful” at this point.
Ooooooh! My DAD wore Grey Flannel (or Old Spice lol). I would love to smell that again.
Grey Flannel! I haven’t thought of that in decades! I totally didn’t get it when it came out- I think I was too young for it.
Oh, get some and write about it! My dad wore it back in The Day.
I find Le Labo stuff generally interesting even if I can’t wear something. Those notes sound worth a look. I believe the whole thing is concept based and a name and a notes list has little to do with what you end up with. Violets are not a fave note but who knows.
Hey Tom,
Aren’t Le Labo famous for calling a perfume something and then making it about ANYTHING else?
Wildly, during the scourge of too much perfume I refound my 2013 Labdanum and Santal we bought at Venice beach. Then, serendipitously, Justin the SA there popped up in my FB so I messaged him. So sweet. What a charming and beautiful man he is.
Portia xx
Well you had me coming and going. It started out with a violet perfume. Love violets. Then, while it was fun reading, the perfume was going slowly downhill. And lastly there was hope again. Will stay tuned. Other than vintage Apres L’Ondee I cannot find many violet perfumes that I like. Guerlain Insolence from 2006 is an exception.
I have to revisit CB I Hate Perfume violet..
I had forgotten, but I bought a partial bottle of Balenciaga Le Dix a few years ago. It is very much a violet perfume on me. I like it a lot but it’s short-lived on me. I’m going to have to try it in different weather and see if that makes a difference.
I have a vintage mini of Le Dix, and I love how it smells. Didn’t realize it had violets in it. Thanks Maya!
🙂
I like a straightforward ‘Spring Violet’ so Vert Violette is my go- to.
And that dog is gonna sh!t in somebody’s shoes!!!
Going to go look for that..
