Hermes Jour d’Hermes Gardenia

Hermes Jour d'Hermes Gardenia reviewHermes Jour d’Hermes Gardenia is the newest release from Hermes, a flanker to Jour d’Hermes.

Never ready to like flankers, but since I loved Jour d’Hermes so much, I gave this a spin.  It’s great.  It’s that sophisticated, elegant floral that is perfect when you want a plush gardenia floral instead of something more earthy.  A fatty, plush floral that’s not too extruded – meaning it’s not super-loud or brassy, a touch of green in it keeps it dewy.  You could wear this lightly in an office, and it would be a beautiful wedding perfume as well. I am hoping they will do an absolu of this one.  There’s nothing groundbreaking in Hermes Jour d’Hermes Gardenia, but there is something beautiful, and no apologies for loving something that is easy to wear and really freaking pretty.  I always have a soft spot for perfumes that do that one job really well, go on, smell beautiful, and behave for the full time they are on.

Winners of the Malle Carnal Flower Hair Mist and potential Carnal Flower Shower Gel – LaDona, CbSutcliffe, Petunia and karibub.  Winners of an older drawing for a sample set of Armani Prive Sable Fume and Sable Or, Unum Lavs and Tom Ford Fleur de Portofino – Jackie B and jirish.

Just click on Drop Us a Note at the top of the blog, send me your name and address and remind me what you’ve won.  I’ll send you a quick “got it” e-mail so you know it didn’t drop into my spam filter and then get it sent to you.

So what’s your mainstream perfume that you think does that one job the best of being beautiful and a great go-to perfume?  I’ll draw out three winners from commenters to get a sample of Hermes Jour d’Hermes Gardenia.

  • Kingcav says:

I would love to try this. My mainstream is Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia

  • Neyon says:

Sounds splendid! I adore the smell of gardenia blooms – lush, creamy and majestic

  • Solanace says:

    Diorama Homme

    • Solanace says:

Dior Homme, crazy corrector! (Not the Diorama isn’t awesome, but it’s not exactly mainstream, not anymore!) Even though Dior Homme is a masculine, I think it’s pretty and soft on a gal.

  • London says:

The original Jour is my vote too. Marc Jacobs Blush is the other mainstream one I thought of.

  • PrincessTonk says:

Kelly Caleche is something that always works for me.

  • tammy says:

Various Bvlgari’s are my mainstream go-tos when I am on the downlow; the rose, the green tea and Pour Femme are always appropriate, never overbearing, always pretty.

I”m trying to find a gardenia that doesn’t asphyxiate me, so thanks for a chance to try this!

  • Maya says:

Original Stella by Stella McCartney. Really pretty and easy to wear. I understand the relaunch version smells the same but is watered down and has no staying power, so I am looking new warm weather go-to perfume. Patchouli Nobile works year-round but is best in chillier weather.

  • Dina C. says:

I’m a big fan of the Jour d’Hermes Absolu, so this sounds great to me! I think I’m on my 3rd sample, so that tells me it might be true love. I also really liked one of the versions of Elie Saab, but I can’t remember which. Chanel les exclusif 1932 is high on my “love it, want a FB” list, too. Thanks for entering me in the drawing.

  • LenaD says:

Flower by Kenzo for comfort and Terracotta Le Perfume for a breeze in your hair feel – are the two mainstream fragrances that make me happy. Can’t wait to sniff Jour d’Hermes Gardenia by myself. Thank you for a lovely review.

  • Hannah says:

I am still searching. For now SJP Lovely or Narciso EDP do this for me.

  • Julie L says:

Hey pretties! This probably isn’t the place but seems to be my only option to put this out there…my email was hacked last week by some ^%$@^ in Nigeria-yeah, I know many of you I’ve communicated with previously got that email and I’m so sorry! No, I’m NOT stranded in Manilla! My email is now broken (thank you very much) so this is my only way to let you all know what happened! I’m trying my best to let people know because my account is frozen, nothing in-nothing will go out, even after changing my password twice…anyhoo, I have a new account that I’ll use for “August Fairy Time”…..(it’s such a violated feeling and quite scary to have this happen 🙁 )

    • Maya says:

I got the Manila email too. Yahoo email seems easy to hack. I know how you feel. When it happened to me, it was used to advertise condoms. Embarrassing. I deleted all my contacts and never put any in again and just use the account for fun stuff. Important email is NOT a Yahoo account anymore.

  • Bastet says:

For “just pretty” I love EL Tuberose Gardenia. I wore it to an outdoor wedding recently and it was perfect. I also considered Cartier Baiser Vole.

  • foxbins says:

My easy-to-wear, appropriate anytime perfume is Carner Barcelona D600. Iris and wood, not too rooty or powdery, not too in your face. Just right for dinner out, being a guest, or hanging around doing nothing.

  • Civet says:

My favorite bedtime scent is Agent Provocateur’s L’Agent. Sweet, pretty, powdery, and oddly satisfying.

  • Tiara says:

I still love Shanghai Lily and Bombay Bling. Never tire of them and they seem to wear well no matter what the weather is. The original Jour d’Hermes saw lots of skin time this spring. Happy to hear the flanker isn’t ruining its good name!

  • Queen Cupcake says:

I would love to try this. Lately, my go-to has been Houbigant Orangers en Fleurs–so lovely but I am always looking for an alternative.

  • Cb Sutcliffe says:

I really WANT to like Jour d’Hermes from the notes, but I just can’t smell it. The body lotion is a little better, but still comes across as almost as unfragranced. I’m looking forward to seeing if I can smell anything in the gardenia version.

For a pretty well behaved white flower, I tend to use Chanel Beige. For non-white flower, Hermes Rose Ikebana

  • Ingeborg says:

My go-to is Bulgari Mon Jasmin noir if I do not want something with much citrus. It is very polished and polite and not anywhere near noir.

How does this flanker compare to the original (which was not for me, a meh on my skin)? I do not know the scent of real gardenia, but have liked several perfumes where it is supposed to be a prominent note.

  • Donna S says:

I loved this when I first smelled it at their store. But was there to get the Caleche so didn’t pick it up. I really like Puredistance Opardu. I think it is fabulous. Lasts. Smells beautiful and can’t stop smelling my wrists. So that one does it for me. Their White is also nice too! I have a gardenia plant that I smell each morning when the blooms are genererous enough to share. Lol.

  • caseymaureen says:

I love O de Lancôme on the rare occasion we have a Mediterranean day in our unreliable summer. It’s only been out of the cupboard twice this summer so far!

  • Laurels says:

My go-to is in fact the original Jour d’Hermes–it always works. The Absolu was nearly all grapefruit on me, but I’m excited to try this one. (Don’t enter me in the drawing, though, please. I’m pretty sure I’ll come across it locally.)

  • Jas says:

    Lancôme o de l’orangerie

  • Jane says:

Sounds beautiful. I love Bottega Veneta and Baiser Vole. Thanks for the draw.

  • Snarkyshiba says:

This new Hermes sounds wonderful. I already love the original, Jour, so your verdict shots this flanker to the top of my list of things to sniff out.

My pick for a great go-to mainstream is Cartier Baiser Vole. Suits any occasion, can be dressed up of down, lasts several hours!

  • Grace says:

I love perfume, but am not a perfume snob and do not call myself a perfumista. I used like to read perfume reviews, but have almost come to a point where I don’t want to anymore (I am talking about other blogs). Reading some blogs you would think that the only acceptable type of perfumes are indie or obscure perfumes that are difficult to find and even more difficult to wear and anything else it heresy. Thank you for reviewing something easy to wear and pretty and not apologizing for that..

  • Sapphire says:

Would have to say Lauren (but unreformulated). Thanks for the drawing.

  • KimB says:

actually, it’s Hermes Jour d’Hermes absolu. Love that one – easy to wear, a bit wore richness than the original Jour d’Hermes
Would love to try the Gardenia!

  • Diane says:

I love EL Tuberose gardenia–always pretty and Frederic Malle Eau de Magnolia. Both, very pretty in the summer!

  • Claudia says:

    31 rue cambon

  • Sun Mi says:

Ah! I love the simple to wear and beautiful! I looooove white florals, so for me Do Son is always a winner. I don’t find it terribly complex, not challenging in the least (for me at least), and just lovely. This Gardenia sounds like it may be one that I really like as well – I hope I get to try it at some point! Thanks for the review and the draw!

  • Jennie says:

For me it’s SJP Lovely. Always just right, always draws compliments. It’s what I wear when I don’t want to think about what to wear.
