Possedarlings! We’re (and by ‘we’re’ I mean I) in the midst of Bleak Midwinter – except it’s been a wild couple of days – I’m writing this on Friday (because tomorrow and Sunday are Plumbing Day!!! Wheee!) and today, in the middle of a Midwestern January, we had temps top out at 51F!!!
Which is great. Except! Come Sunday, it’ll be a high of… 7. Seven. Se.Ven. Which is.. absurd. But.. (oh, here’s the shrug emoji). Anyway, I was thinking about Winter perfumes and for some completely incomprehensible reason, landed on citrus. Actually, I know the persack reason I landed on citrus – it’s actually Citrus Season right now. Oranges, grapefruits, those little clementines… all are showing up in the produce aisles, looking all jewel-like and tasting like little pops of heaven… funny how I rarely think of citrus as a Winter scent, though. So I decided to remedy that, trying some of my favorites in the chilliness of post-Christmas.
Agraria Bitter Orange: I was really nervous about trying this in January because it sits firmly in my scent memory as an Urban Summer Perfume – it (along with Liz Zorn’s Violets and Rainwater) always reminds me of sitting at one of the outdoor cafes near Gramercy Park in NYC right after a brief Summer shower. But! Turns out Bitter Orange, with it’s strong sweet orange (almost orange juice) scent underpinned by the round spiciness of clove, is a great Winter scent. Plus it smells like Constant Comment tea, which I always drink with a slice of orange in Winter. It’s even better if you use the shower gel and body lotion to amp up the scent. (n.b. looks like Agraria isn’t selling a lot of body products anymore, which is both a damb shame and a blessing. If they made a good body cream I’d probably never get out of the bathroom!) I have one bottle of the cologne left – once that’s gone I’ll use the Room Spray. See if I don’t 😉
Hermes Pamplemousse Rose – JCE must love him some Musette because, sweatergawd, it feels as if he made this especially for me! I’m on my third (!) bottle and it’s one of those evanescent perfumes that nevertheless manage to hold my interest (and has quite a bit of longevity). This is the most elegant grapefruit/citrus I’ve ever smelled (none of the bitter pith ) with Ellena’s always nuanced composition… and a bit of a wink and a nod to the double meaning of ‘rose’. I have the cologne – there is a concentree’ but imo it loses the freshness that makes the original so appealing. Ymmv. If so, lmk!
Demeter Sweet Orange – omLORDT! This has the fabulous CB written all over it (and fingers crossed I am not just presuming/wishing – there’s no actual timeline I can find to determine persackly when he left Demeter and my plumber’s coming in about 30 minutes * so (insert that lovely shrug emoji) – if anyone knows if this is his, please lmk. Anyhoo – back to Sweet Orange...
so.. this is exactly how so many have described it – the smell of that first orange ‘mist’ you get when you break the peel of a really good, fresh orange in Winter. It’s simple, charming, beautiful, so lighthearted-yet-grounded. There’s no way in an orange grove you can spray this and not be transported to Good Mood Land. It’s also a perfect layering scent for Agraria, if you’re looking to dilute the clove a little bit. It also works well underneath vintage Coty L’Origan, which is kinda bizarre because who would’ve thought a very decidedly ORANGE orange would work so well under a carnation-centric scent. But it does.
These are my 3 in current rotation. Obviously I’ve focused on the sweeter citrus; lemon is beautiful..but it’s not as ‘cozy’ as orange and grapefruit and in the extreme cold something about that note vanishes almost upon application At least it does on my skin. Has anyone had better luck?
- tickticktick…any time now, my doorbell with ring and MY PLUMBER – my BELOVED PLUMBER!!! will be here to hook up the ‘facilities’ in my new bathroom. TO BE FAIR… there is still a lot to do (baseboards, etc) but the essentials! DONE! (or, at least, they will be once he gets here)!!!
I would like to add (to my above mentioned Winter Palace), that I love to use body washes and body lotions to lift my mood in winter. This year I have all of the L’Occitane limited edition ones (there is one with kumquat, one with kaffir lime etc.) together with Rind Concentrate by Aesop. I live in the Alps and apart from the cold we get little light. I need all the help I can get.
Hugs, G
My winter citrus is AA Orange Soleia. Always gets compliments whilst AA Pamplelune disappears in cold weather.
I look forward to the result of the bathroom adventures!
My favourite winter citrus, and one that I wear from early january until late february, is Winter Palace by Memo.
Oooh! I’ll have to try that one!
Please do!
My fave citrus is L’Artisan Seville l’Aube and it’s a summer staple….maybe I’ll try it next week. Right now it’s -4F at my house and I need some heavy hitters, perfume wise.
It was a brutal -11F this morning, Ms A! We did get up to 2F… but the sun is dropping so (insert shivering shrug emoji)
That L’Artisan is absolutely lovely. I have the scrab of a decant left – I should try it in this weather!
Toooo coooold
Chanel Gabrielle is a pretty citrus too, I found a decant I didn’t know I have, but my first thought was perfect for summer. I’ll try it instead winter too.
I like citrus scents but don’t really have many. I really should remedy that. I don’t know about them in winter though.
The plumbing is all good? Plumbing matters! That’s why I love nature and the outdoors but I don’t like or do camping – no indoor plumbing. Enjoy your bathroom.
LOL! We must be sisters! I absolutely HATEdoing anything ablutions without the luxury of running water – and I do NOT mean a creek.
Ditto, Sis. 🙂
Hmmmm, I should try the Demeter, how have I not?!?! I’m going to dab on a touch of my iPdF Arancia Dolce this morning … I got it in Florence so long ago and I wear it sparingly, tiny bottle. Perfect weather for it.
TO BE FAIR…
While beautiful … I really don’t think the Sweet Orange is ‘you’ – it’s absolutely gorgeous but it’s supremely uncomplicated.
Hope the Arancia Dolce cheered you up on this frigid day!
For the most part, I confine citrus scents to the spring/summer rotation. However, there are a few just too heavyhanded to wear with anything other than a sweater in the frozen north–Fred Segal Citrus Zest, Nest Paradise, and Versace Versense. Best of luck with your plumbing work and be sure to check right away and often for leaks. We had work done recently by two different plumbers in the kitchen and master bath, and both projects leaked. The new kitchen sink plumbing leaked FOUR times until it was finally fixed. I was shocked they kept taking my calls!
That Fred Segal… how did I miss that?
Definitely checking for leaks, especially in this ridiculous weather. Luckily… no leaks so far (fingers crossed).
I hope we hear wonderful plumbing stories when you comment on our comments:-)
Citrus. I don’t even really eat citrus fruit in the winter. Get my vitamin C elsewhere. Only thing citrus going in this house is candles. I am alternating between the citrus and the gourmands.
7 degrees. I don’t even know what that is in Celsius and I’m not going to look. The daffodils are up here. Soon it will be crocuses and snowdrops. Thank you, Mother Nature.
cinnamon –
when I woke up this morning it was a whopping MINUS 11F. Northern Plains were clocking in at minus 24F – and below.
We’re insane like that.
So excited to hear that the plumbing is getting done! Yay! I totally agree about citrus and winter working well together. Oranges give that juicy vitamin C boost that everyone needs when it’s overcast and bleak outside. Same for the scent. I just ordered a mini of Prada Infusion d’Mandarine a few days ago. I’ve worn Dior Escale a Portofino (bergamot) and Chanel Cristalle eau Verte (lime) on winter days when I needed that brightness and lift. Love a cup of Constant Comment tea any time of year. I wonder why Agraria stopped making all their scented body products.
those are great Winter citrus options!
Dunno re Agraria – maybe they’ve decided to focus solely on Home?
I love citrus in winter. I love working plumbing even more! Hope you get the latter as well as the former.
I did! Squeeeee!
More about it in a coming post
Good Luck with the plumber gorgeous Musette, Can’t wait to see pictures of the new bathroom.
You are so lucky with Pamplemousse Rose, it lasts nearly no time at all on me.
Portia xx
Hey, beautiful! Could it be… that I marinate in PRose?
Could be…
