Long Gone

Hiya Posse, It’s the time of year that I start having reflective thoughts. Love, good times, loss, grief, pinnacles and depths all come flooding back. It’s nearly impossible to live on this planet and fail to be swept up in the Christmas story. No matter what your religion, or lack of it. Christmas is a relentless barrage. Expectations, history, shopping, events, family and friends. It can cause even the most prosaic of us to have melt downs. Last year mine was epic and will not soon be forgotten, or forgiven. It did clear the air though. Anyway, it’s inspired me because I’ve been looking at some of my long gone, discontinued perfumes. The important ones have a backup or two, mostly. Some got completely away, as they do.

Long Gone

Most of my long gone lovelies you’ve read about from me before, elsewhere. Let’s take a trip down Memory Lane. Then in the comments I’d love to read about some of yours too please.

Long Gone

Blonde by Versace

BWF alert! Working in nightclubs we were often given boxed samples to give out during a night. Blonde and Dreamer were both given to us one weekend. All of us Drag Queens went crazy for Blonde and most of us bought a Dreamer as well. You know, back then we separated the sexes we dressed in by scent. It must have been a Sydney Drag Signature for five or six years. When it hit the discounters I bought a couple of bottles of the EdT and a few of the extrait. Every now and then I get the spirit and douse myself in both for special gigs. The hoard is running low now. I can’t find my open bottles! GAH! Freakout and nearly two hours of searching, I’ve put them away (obviously in a rush). Pictured is my last BNIC EdT.

Liberté by Cacharel

This is one of my most worn DCd fragrances. Yes, I know it’s really pedestrian, was a huge flop and is eschewed by most of the perfumistahood. Don’t care. This sizzling orange fruitchouli confection brings a smile to my face every spritz. It was really lucky how reviled it was. During its run out I was able to purchase bottles for next to nothing. Pretty sure I’ll NEVER run out, even ifs I live to 200.

Niki de Saint Phalle

Of all the long lost chypres this is the ONE! It’s not just the scent, which is fabulous. It’s the Niki de Saint Phalle story, the packaging and her art. I’m yet to go to the Japanese island park where her statutory is displayed. We do make pilgrimage to the water garden next to the Pompidou Centre every Paris visit. We’ve travelled to Hannover in Germany, where so much of her work is enshrined. There’s something so alluring about her art that captures my imagination. Luckily, we were given a heads up that they were DCing the brand and though Long Gone I have heaps here in all shapes and sizes. Never did get that extrait bottle but some day it will show up.

Vanille Noire by Yves Rocher

Jin and my first visit to Europe together we caught the train to Prague. It was 2013 and I’d been blogging for just over a year. Also, I was making stupid money. They say a fool and his money are soon parted, truth. HA! It was my first Sephora (in the train station but I didn’t get there for a proper look till we were leaving), bought my first Cartier Les Heures at their Town Square store and found an Yves Rocher store on the main drag from station to our hotel. Mid winter, snow piled up on the ground and I was looking for a delectably chewy vanilla. Quell Surprise! Vanille Noire. There is still over half left but when I want a cheeky pick memory scent, nothing fits the same spot.

The whole Tommi Sooni brand

Cue the wailing and gnashing of teeth. Tommi Sooni was one of the most progressive perfume houses of its time. An Australian brand that really pushed some envelopes. They are Long Gone but not forgotten. In the end I bought four but WISH I’d had the foresight to buy three of everything. I’ve got TS1, TS2, Jinx and Tarantella. They closed with zero fanfare and no sellout. One day they were buyable, then they were gone. So bloody sad. Now my bottles are boxed and packed away. Too precious to use.

Long Gone

So there are some of mine. What faves of yours are Long Gone?

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

That would be my beloved Theorema, I shed a tear or two over the final drops earlier this year. The older I get the less patience I have for nonsense too. Best Wishes to you and Jin for a wonderful holiday season!

  • ElizaC says:

I’ve mentioned these before but I will always regret not buying as many bottles as possible of the Parfums DelRae Amoureuse, Caron’s Nuit de Noel and Seville a l’Aube. Who cares about storage or budgets!

    • Portia says:

      ElizaC,
OMG! Amoureuse! I have half a bottle that is just too precious to wear. What a freaking beauty.
The others I have the working bottle and a backup of.
      Hoarding is my thing.

  • Tom says:

There are so many. But I guess that makes a good excuse to try new things.

  • March says:

Tommi Sooni! Yeah, poof then gone! Which was really a shame. And I loved Dreamer, what an oddity.

    • Portia says:

We never got the low down on why March. Just gone.
Dreamer! So cool. They did this weird reformulation when they changed the box and I fell out of love with it. Bummer.

  • JillS says:

I may be showing my age, but I miss Unforgettable Skin Softener by Avon. Then I wore Oh! de London by Yardley. More recent faves were the original Miss Dior and Theorema.

    • Portia says:

      Hey JillS!
I remember Mum having an Avon for a while called Imari. She also had the shower gel which came in a hang over the shower rail squeeze bottle. I thought it was the coolest piece of design ever.

  • Maya says:

I can’t think of any Long Gone right now. I always enjoyed perfume but it was a long time before I became a perfumista, so no old love has had a chance to be particularly long gone.
That may be partly why I love vintage, the seriously long gone vintage, so much. You get to sniff and wear some of the most beautiful perfumes ever created, sometimes not even knowing they existed. And when you’re lucky, you can sometimes find a bottle in good shape at an affordable price. Heavenly!

  • Musette says:

Honeydoodle! Tarantella was the first leather I could actually identify within the host of other notes ) I’m not taking sll the leather-forward scents into account).

But … yonks later… that note is GAWN! …at least for me.

My Sobbing Long Gone is Coty Chypre. WAFT by Carol sent me an vial of the most exquisite iteration of it. I’d put a dab on… and have an olfactory ‘Little Warm Death ‘

    • Portia says:

Ahhhhhh! Coty Chypre. We were lucky enough to smell it with Jean Kerleo at the Osmotheque. I know we swooned but we smelled so much that day that the exact profile has left my memory.

  • MmkinPA says:

Sad! When you lose favorites. I haven’t been doing this long enough to have lost any! The closest was when I couldn’t find SJP Stash anywhere (all time favorite for both scent and sentimental reasons) but it seems more accessible at the moment. To be honest, though, I have so much perfume that I rarely come close to finishing anything so it never feels like I’m running out…

  • Dawn Crawford says:

Septieme Sens by Sonia Rykiel, Diamond Water by JAR, Chamade by Guerlain. If only.

  • Dina C. says:

Thanks for that trip down memory lane, Portia! From my teen years: Flora Danica by Royal Copenhagen. It came in a beautifully hand painted bottle which I stupidly threw away when it was empty. Also miss the OG Lauren in the red cube. More recently: Guerlain Vol de Nuit Evasion, AKA Guet Apens, AKA Attrape Couer.

  • Fernandno says:

Guerlain has a talent for dropping perfumes I like from their list: Derby, Arsene Lupin Dandy, Coriolan.

  • cinnamon says:

I remind myself daily that we’re almost at the solstice and then it’s upward into the light. At least that’s how I manage this time of year.

The long gones I miss … Tauer Orris. I wish I had bought a backup. The Cezanne studio candle. Again, should have bought a bushel of them. Finally, Gaubin Daude line. All of them. What a shame. Sigh.

    • March says:

Gobin Daude. Man … that was early on in my insanity and I didn’t realize how special they were, or how they’d just be gone in a snap. And yeah, I do the same thing with the solstice — we’re almost there! I cannot imagine how people live through looong, dark winters in the far north.

      • Musette says:

We’re not even AT the Solstice yet…and we’re expecting a low of Minus EIGHT tonight. MI. nus. ( ( about which I’ve already whiiiined to March)

And we’re getting tons of snow right now… yikes!

This is a rough Winter coming, I fear…

    • Portia says:

We are heading towards longest day here in Oz Cinnamon, fortunately we don’t really have the short days of winter you get. There are still lovely balmy days even in the dead of winter.
Tauer! So many good things he has DCd.

My long gones are probably quite common.
Gucci Envy. The best name/scent combo ever. The best sharp, green, talons out fragrance. I thought it would be around for ever, so never stocked up. Well, that & a friend started wearing it & it suited her catty wit far better than it suited me.
Nicki Verfailles Grain de Sable. My wedding scent. Never released in the UK, I bought it at Athens airport. Think Diorella with the overripe fruit dialled up to 10. Very akin to FM Le Parfum de Therese. In my early Basenotes days I was gifted a mini, which I treasure.
Charles of the Ritz. The version I had was in a metal bottle in a red/purple/brown shade. A HUGE kitchen sinker very heavy on the carnation.
I will stop here otherwise this will be a long, long list
