Yes, I am whining. Again.

I do have things sitting here waiting for me to review but it’s hot and I’m lazy. Yes, I know that it’s not as hot in West Hollywood this morning as it is in say Wauwatosa or even West Adams. and Washington DC and the rest of the East Coast could be underwater by Thursday. So I shouldn’t be complaining because it’s not hot, comparatively. And I have AC.

But I don’t let that stop me.

I do have a packet of musk samples that I need to get to as well as a few others but when it’s too hot I just want to bite people. We are getting humidity (again, relatively. It’s 45%, which is in West Virginia desert-like, I suppose) so it’s like a wet sauna to me. Ugh.

Rain we aren’t getting. Yet.

So I have been turning to the lighter side, mostly of things you’ve already read about: Alvarez Gomez, Dior Eau Sauvage, Acqua di Parma, and the default for me, Eau de Hadrien. I love Eau de Sud even more but that one can come out in the evening.

So, a couple of updates. I am down to either 190 or 199, depending upon where I stand on the Hume scale the people who refunded me the second one that didn’t work left me with rather than paying to ship it back.

The $13 digital LCD scale I have had for years reads 196. I will be very happy when it’s 175. I know that sounds thin for someone that tall, but I have a very weird body- big chest and shoulders on teensy little hips and ankles and wrist that’s about 7″ in circumference. Which is a plus and a minus- I tell myself that I can carry a few extra lbs. and not show it. Don’t dissuade me.

Since it’s been hot and in season and dirt cheap I have been having watermelon a lot. I make a salad out of it- watermelon chunks with crumbled goat cheese and diced red onion that I soak in lime juice. Black pepper and maldon salt and you have a nice lunch dish. With a cold piece of chicken or fish it’s dinner. Berries are in season and I am a total fool for them. I will say that the blackberries I used to filch in the woods behind our houses growing up tasted better but that might be the glow of nostalgia and the added sweetness of (somewhat) purloining them. If I don’t eat them in a day or two they go in the freezer. I can add them into plain yoghurt frozen the night before and have them ready for breakfast.

I wouldn’t try to get away with that top,

Okay- I’ve babbled long enough about not very much- how is your week going? Are you in the path of Weather? (who isn’t, according to the news?) What are you doing to beat the heat? (I know it’s winter South of the border. If I had SuperLooto winnings I’d be travelling between hemispheres telling everyone “I haven’t seen  an Autumn or Winter in years..”)

Most of the summery ones I’ve mentioned are able to be sampled at Surrender To Chance.

The watermelon salad with feta & olives a one of my regular summer meals. I like to dress with lemon juice & peppery Greek EVOO. Green bell peppers are a delicious addition too.
It’s 10.30pm now & 15c outside. Inside it’s 26c & we have no running water. A water main on the road between our two village centres had burst & brought part of the road up.
I’ve used baby wipes & 4711 to do a “festival bath”

I am so sorry about the water- we had a main break close by that caused a bunch of problems with flooded garages and power off.

I hope the people who plan things in your village have more brains than the people who do so here- who puts a string of high-rise hotels on a fault line and then doesn’t even upgrade the supply lines and sewers that have to serve them? That spent over 100 years serving two-story buildings. That’s my rant for the day

Nope the Planning Committee have granted permission to build over 300 new homes in the last 5 years. The largest proposed development is on hold as the Planning committee insisted upon new infrastructure to be a condition of the permission. The developers are just sitting on the land until the current permission lapses & they can reapply to the now Reform led committee. Large bags of low denomination notes will be expected if the Reform councillors are like their leader. The council had to build a new nursery& primary school but after 10 years it’s already over subscribed.
The village has a 1000 year history of mine workings so slips & sinkholes are common but the private water company hasn’t invested in decades & our drains & water systems are Victorian. The water company actually sold the land above the underground reservoir to be developed!
The world over money is king!
The water is back on but the main road is closed from the damaged drain.

I wear lots of citrus in the summer heat (Eau d’Hadrien, Moschino I Love Love and even Chanel Allure Homme Edition Blanche) plus Chanel No. 5 L’eau.

I absolutely love watermelon salad and happen to be making it tonight. I also have to recommend a beverage I had recently at a farmer’s market. It was just watermelon blended with a little water over ice. Super simple, super cold and super refreshing. No sugar added or needed.

    • Tom says:

Funny you say that- the market I got to has that same thing. Delicious- I don’t think if even needs booze.

  • Dina C. says:

Today I’m wearing Lubin Gin Fizz, Tom, which is a marvelous unisex citrus scent supposedly favored by Grace Kelly. (Anyone else know if that’s true?) If so, I salute her good taste. Your watermelon salad sounds tasty, speaking of taste. I would switch out the goat cheese for feta, but that’s just me. My daughter loves goat cheese. Best wishes on your continuing weight loss journey. I’m avoiding the heat by staying in the a/c. Also wearing linen and cotton clothes only.

The Weather has largely missed us. It’s too warm and too dry here but what else is new? That is awesome about your weight, and your describing your body shape makes a lot of sense (I was thinking of your barrel chest … but not in a perv way.)

  • Musette says:

Tom, those musks might be really interesting in your heat… but that might just be the SAVAGE in me…

    • Tom says:

They are! But they’re exposed to it going from the house to the office so the exposure is limited. But oh my- I’ve gotten complements.

  • jillks says:

Here in the Phila. area we’ve had thunderstorms, rain and wind advisories. It’s so humid I can’t wear my rings.
Congrats on the weightloss. I love your recipe. Eau de Hadrien was a summer staple of mine. Now I wear Hermes green tea or Jo Malone Sweet Lime and Cedar, also MM Replica Beach Walk in this weather.
    I dislike summer and winter.
I was just watching a talk by the author of “Platonic” and she was saying how expressing vulnerability invites people in to become friends so complain away!

    • Tom says:

Green Tea and Beach Walk are also perfect- I have a vat of the green tea one that a friend gave me. It’s in the icebox.

I think whining is appropriate. We’re a lot more comfortable than much of the world at this point (high today will be 28-ish / low 80s) but who knows how things will unfold.

I’m still doing Halston a lot but did have a break for Divine one day and Eshal another. It’s Fracas today from my rapidly dwindling sample.

    • Tom says:

I enjoy whining. It’s like a safety valve.

I want to read about how you found Fracas. In detail.

  • Portia says:

    Heya tom,
It’s delightful here. Warm, sunshiny days and very chilly evenings. Wearing all sorts and fragrant odds and bobs.
Today was admin day. Tomorrow I go north four hours to see a couple of girlfriends who’ve made the sea change. Just for a night and day.
Good luck with the humid heat.
    Portia x

Well, in the past week we went from “Heat Advisory” to “Extreme Heat Warning”. Temps were in the 90’s to over 100’s with high humidity. Friday evening and night the Dew Point was 80F!!!! I’ve never seen that! Breathing outside was uncomfortable. Today was in the 90’s. Tonight “85F feels like 96F” and the Dew Point is 77F! And humid! Kansas City has been shockingly quiet. Even the homeless seem to be in hiding. That’s my miserable tale.

    • Tom says:

I’m trying not to pi$$ and moan too much since I know the rest of the country as well as a lot of the rest of the planet are having truly dangerous weather. But I’m still whining..
