DSH Winter Goodness

I had a chance to sample a few new fragrances from DSH Perfumes

Cuir et Champignon – a bunch of you have tried this one.  Dawn says: Cuir et Champignon embodies all the soft and inviting qualities of white button mushrooms, then leads you to a more hidden place where the darker mushrooms grow and on to rich rawhide and dusty leather. It’s, unsurprisingly, an earthy, mushroom-y leather with a hint of tobacco.  It’s got that smutty barnyard aspect (hello, civet and castoreum!) that many of you absolutely love in leather – the earthy direction rather than the smoky/sharp birchtar.  Soft, simple, maybe not the safest choice for work, unless you actually work in a barnyard.  I think it’s incredibly sexy, and not in a white button-mushroom way.  Consider yourself skanked.  Notes are: Bergamot, Clary Sage, Galbanum, Neroli, Wild Chamomile, Cepes (mushroom absolute), Clove Bud, Gardenia, Honey, Orris, Sandalwood, Tuberose Absolute, Castoreum, Civet, Guiacwood, Hiba Cedarwood, Indonesian Vetiver, Leather, Peru Balsam, Tobacco Absolute.

Mata Hari – this is her Outlaw Perfume, made with restricted IFRA ingredients; I very much wanted to try this.  The warning attached to it is hilarious– patch test! Use with caution!  Potential irritant!  Danger danger Will Robinson! Guess what?  My arm didn’t drop off.  It’s a nod to zaftig scents from classical perfumery of the early 20th century, a fruity chypre with leather and peach accents, all botanical.  It takes a few minutes to set up on my skin, after which it’s a powerhouse – the sort of thing that deserves either a night out on the town or some marabou slippers in the boudoir.

Winter WhiteOne of our “skin scents” that adds a natural, “not-too-perfumey” fragrance to the skin. Notes are: Raspberry, Sandalwood, White Rose Accord, Heliotrope, Musk, White Chocolate.  A classic DSH comfort scent that wears more lightly than you’d guess from that list of notes – so, so pretty, it really is a skin scent, a bit like Barbara Bui, very soft and lightly powdery.

Also: her holiday sale’s been extended to the 18th – the code HOLIDAY10 at checkout should get you 20% off.

Dawn sent me one of her new Winter White perfume solids to give away (she did solids of some of her most popular scents like Cimabue and Cafe Noir). I’ll include it, Mata Hari, and some other DSH samples in the draw, leave a comment saying if you want it and I’ll pick somebody (US only this time please, I have a prepaid box for it.) UPDATE: drawing is closed, winner is Jennifer, I emailed you.

  • mariekel says:

I think Cafe Noir has become my absolute favourite cold weather scent — and I typically loathe gourmands. It is the only coffee perfume I have tried that manages to capture the roasted, smoke quality of coffee without veering off into sweet overkill.

I would adore to try the Champignon — it sounds right up my alley!

  • KathyT says:

I’d love to be included in the drawing – thanks! I’m really enjoying DSH Festive right now.

Please enter me in the draw. I am very curious about her scents.

  • fleurdelys says:

Please enter me in the drawing, I’d love to explore some of DSH’s fragrances.

  • Rappleyea says:

The very kind and generous Carol of WAFTbyCarol sent me several DSH samples about a year ago. I tried and liked several of them but got sidetracked as a tester of Incense Pure for Laurie of SSS and never went back to them. I’m seriously considering ordering her winter collection with the discount. Dawn is that wonderful combination of talented AND quirky so thanks for this reminder and the chance to continue exploring her line.

  • dee says:

    I want it! :x

  • Lauren says:

Sounds very nice – please include me in the draw.

  • Gilty says:

DSH has been on my “to sniff” list forever…so many of her frags sound amazing. I think I need to check out that sale… And I’d love to be entered in the draw!

  • Victoria says:

March, Cuir et Champignon is the fragrance that I am most interested to try from the line. You know that you have gone over to the dark side when words like “smut” and “barnyard” make you excited!

  • LindaB says:

Please enter me in the drawing! I have never tried DSH fragrances and these sound very interesting…especially the “Outlaw Perfume”. I love a rebel.

  • Shelley says:

The DSH line intrigues me, as it sort of embodies the idea of “independent perfumer, good ingredients, interesting results.” The website doesn’t frighten me in the way it intimidates/aggravates others…I kind of get that sort of mind…but the price point does make me pause. Not because I think it is wrong, but because I am not in the area, so it costs me just to play a little to figure out which avenues I should further explore.

So it goes with independents in general; somebody registered a similar complaint about the Ayala line last Friday; I’d say that goes with the territory, and is very understandable. This is ONE person with heightened budget issues; just because it is a sample doesn’t mean it didn’t cost time and materials to create them.

That said, I have always appreciated the independents who make sampling from a distance relatively easy.

    But I wander…

I love the DSH Deco labels, and the care she takes with her bottles. Queer Champagne sounds right up my alley; I made note of it when it was released. (Ah! “Note” of it? ah ha ha ha) /:) Winter White is another one of my alleys; thank you for bringing it to my attention.

I wonder how it will work in -20 wind chill???

  • Cheryl G says:

I would love to sample the DSH especially the Mata Hari. I feel a kinship with the outlaws. I however, would most likely purchase the Winter White. I need comforting.

  • Catherine says:

Count me in, please, dear March! I’ll love to try something different as the winter hibernation descends.

  • Annette K says:

I would love to win!!! Please enter me

  • Musette says:

I am not draw-worthy but I must say, these sound deee-lish! I need to investigate her further.

And folks – shut up about FREEZE. It’s 1degree here. ONE. Add a 40mph wind…. they have closed all the hill streets – with excellent reason (one literally cannot drive down the hills to the river. well, I guess you can drive…but you cannot stop? 😕

    your whiny >-)

    • Catherine says:

Wishing you much luck today! Many of our streets are plowed–but damn, it’s so cold!

    • Ann N. says:

Hey Anita, OK, will stop with the complaining. It’s always worse somewhere else, right? Hang in there and stay warm. :)>-

      • Musette says:

oh, you can go ahead and complain! 😉 Catherine’s got it WAY worse than me, etc etc….

        …to be honest, I’m just jealous! :”>

        xo >-)

  • Ann N. says:

Oooh, I’d love to try that Cuir & Champignon! Please enter me in the drawing. thanks!

  • Geordan1244 says:

Cimabue is my favorite of hers – needing to buy a fb during the sale. Lemming for Mata Hari…I love those man-eater sensual scents.DSH is an amazing talent. Would love to be in the draw.

  • Style Spy says:

I’m dying to try all of the outlaw scents, and so, so curious about the Cuir et Champignon. Mushrooms! Leather! Weird!

  • Francesca says:

Those sound great. Wonder why I haven’t tried her yet. LOL on not the safest choice for work unless you actually work in a barnyard. I’d add “or publishing”

  • rosarita says:

Count me in, and thanks for the opportunity!

  • Masha says:

We are in the middle of a Snowpocalypse here today, everyone stuck at home, so I’d love to try a comfort scent! Not so sure about the mushroom one, though….

  • Jared says:

I don’t need to be in the drawing: I might just go and buy that mushroomy leather RIGHT NOW. It sounds awesome. Buzz words of “skank” “civet” and “castoreum” basically put anything in my shopping cart.

Speaking of, I’m wearing the Kirkdjian Absolue Pour le Soir right now- have you tried this yet March? I forgot about it when you did the cumin post, but this has it….welcome to skanky…but I loooooove it! It’s got me close to the “signature scent” territory. Scary, I know. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it!

  • Monique says:

US people only-not fair! I’ve just discovered DSH and made my first purchase the other day. I’m waiting for my mail to arrive-can’t wait, I’m so excited to experience my first DHS scent. Please remember your international fans for future draws :x

  • HikerChick says:

Oh dear Lord… you had me @ “Barbara Bui”… I’ll never stop missing that one. Please enter me, too.

I’m afraid that I have Cepes & Tuberose from Aftelier on the brain, making me salivate for Cuir et Champignon I love, just love mushroom-y scents.

  • Furriner says:

I agree DIrty Rose is very nice. Also, I was able to sniff Mata Hari briefly last week and it has piqued my interest in more of her scents. SIgn me up for the draw!

  • dissed says:

Winter White sounds warm. Want. I haven’t used a solid in ages.

Need to order up some more Erotica before it’s gone forever.
