CHANEL Coco Vintage Extrait

Hello Posse Peeps! My bottle of CHANEL Coco Vintage Extrait came from another fragrance lover who felt they had more than their fair share and was downsizing the excess. Considering how often I give myself a few sneaky swipes with it there is still a lot left in my 15ml bottle. It’s either a 1992 or 2000 vintage by the bottom stamp and glass lid thickness. Pretty sure it isn’t a 2008, too full bodied and a little bit dirty. Ann also loves Coco.

Parfumo gives these featured accords:
Top: Mandarin, Pimento, Coriander, Frangipani
Heart: Jasmine, Rose, Orange blossom, Ylang-ylang, Cinnamon, Iris, Angelica
Base: Patchouli, Tonka bean, Benzoin, Frankincense, Amber, Musk, Honey, Civet

Even lifting the glass stopper out of the CHANEL Coco bottle sends a thrill of butteries through my tummy. Almost immediately I’m hit by the spices pepper and cinnamon. Some flowers are all bunched together with only hints of rose & ylang sticking out. Resins are already working to smooth the whole extravaganza over, to soften, enrich and blend everything into the inimitable Coco.

Once I swipe on my skin Coco almost immediately blooms. It’s thick, deep with layers and every so often one ingredient will poke its nose out. In reality though it’s like looking at a northern Indian silk carpet. Each little colour block is interesting, beautiful, perfectly knotted and cut yet it’s looking at the whole that makes it utterly breathtaking. Plush and regal, a honeyed, spicy, resinous bouquet that quietly announces your presence.

Anyone wearing this beguiling 1984 Jaques Polge masterpiece will be taken seriously. Its gravitas is a powerful weapon in your arsenal. Be it seduction, backbone, business or gala, CHANEL Coco extrait will give you the extra lift and oomph you need. It’s almost impossible to slouch or seems less than you are when surrounded by this nimbus. An especially good choice for all the holiday adventures currently in full swing.

Your review has me yearning for it. I sprayed some EDP on at Macy’s yesterday and loved it all night long. I’d forgotten! I wonder if anyone can explain the ‘vintage’ part – when was it reformulated and how different is the current parfum different from vintage? (Not that Macy’s carries any parfum strength – of anything!) ‘Extrait’ isn’t part of the name of the perfume you’re describing, is it?

    • Portia says:

      Hi Sarah,
Every batch is slightly different because of the ingredients inside that differ from year to year. The jasmine, rose and whatever crops are weather/soil/sunlight affected. They have to tweak the formula each year so it stays the same. Regulations have taken some of the things and swapped them out for others. It’s not that they necessarily did a total reform but over time everything changes.
The older stuff, like whiskey, gets better with age as long as it’s stored carefully.
The current Coco extrait is still heart-stoppingly beautiful.
Extrait is the strength, also called Parfum and erroneously Pure Parfum. The strongest amount of ingredients to alcohol ratio you can get. It wears less showily and closer to the skin because there’s less alcohol to lift it quickly. It also lasts beautifully and has a deeper tone.

Oh, oh, oh!! Be still my heart!! What a wonderful gift for you! This scent is gorgeous in any light but vintage parfum? I can hardly imagine! Thanks for sharing this, dear, it made my day!!

  • Kathleen says:

Coco was my first Chanel love; my grandmother bought me a bottle was I was 18 years old. It felt so glamorous! I wish I still had that bottle. I’ve never had the fortune to sniff the extrait. Portia you have described the fragrance beautifully. I have an older bottle of EDP, and a vintage EDT which I both love. I also really enjoy Coco Noir.

  • Musette says:

this is a March Madness! I confess to not loving it, though I certainly ‘get’ it. It’s gorgeous (esp in extrait) but not ‘me’. More for youse guys! lol! xoxoxo

Coco extrait was my first Christmas present from my husband, back when he was still my new boyfriend! And it was the scent I wore when we married a few years later. It brings back wonderful memories.

Ohhhhhhmyyyyyy…I have a bottle of the parfum that I got in the early Nineties — not a ton left, but god, it’s gorgeous! It is one of the most decadent-smelling perfumes I’ve ever worn!

  • Jo says:

I love Chanel Coco! I have a vintage bottle of the EDP spray. Absolutely adore it.

  • Eldarwen22 says:

I haven’t had the pleasure of trying the extrait vintage or otherwise. I have an older dabber bottle of the edp that I am going to have to try out.

  • Bastet says:

I have a bottle of Coco EDP from around the same time- it’s also fabulous! And I agree, perfect for the holiday season.

  • MMKinPA says:

Love that little bottle. I have has a couple of very small decants of Coco but both evaporated quickly. I would love to smell the extrait!!

  • Brigitte says:

Like everyone else I am jealous! I wore the original EDT or EDP (not sure?) when it first came out because it was gifted to me. I did not love it at the time but felt obligated to wear it since it was a gift. Now I wish I would have saved some…I can only imagine it is far more luxurious and gorgeous in perfume version!!

  • matty says:

I’ve never smelt the vintage extrait. I’m sure it’s divine. I do have a spray of the Coco when I’m in the perfume section of a dept store.Nothing like the vintage, but I still like it.

  • Shiva-woman says:

I am jealous of that bottle! I have vintage coco half-bottles, one an EDT and it’s amazing. This is still one of my favorites, very powerful, seductive and comforting all at once. It’s also one of the few scents I always get compliments on, so I guess it works with my skin. I’m definitely a Coco versus Chanel 5 person.

  • Libby says:

Ooh, sounds lovely. I get said when I think about the few perfumes I had in the past before I knew so much and didn’t appreciate enough. I love spice in my scent

  • Tara C says:

Haven’t had the good fortune to smell the extrait, but I do love the edp. A spicy beauty. Coco Noir is nice too.
