Rock the Myrrh by Dries Van Noten

Heya Posse, Rock the Myrrh by Dries Van Noten came out in 2022 and I tried it last year on a day in Melbourne with the below pictured bunch of fragrance loving superstars Anna Maria, Margeaux and Rob Blandford. We were at the brand new, three story, Mega Mecca. Definitely worth a visit if you happen to hit Melbourne. I might have fallen madly in love, just quietly. Yes, there are plenty of places to spritz the DvN collection of perfumes here in Sydney but there is nothing like getting to do it at home. So off to Surrender to Chance and added it to a recent order. Considering how much a bottle sells for here in Oz, it felt like a pretty good deal.

Perfumer Amelie Jacquin is a fairly new nose on the scene but she has some impressive houses and some low key niche and mainstream hits already. I’m thinking she may be a name to remember.

What is it about Rock the Myrrh that had me swooning? Especially in this super cool, august company? I may have a style that is like a lodestone. That rich, resin sweet, deep and burnished beauty. It’s a feeling more than a specific scent profile. Like if you looked at all the boyfriends and partners I ever had. They range wildly in size, colour, wealth, beauty and ability to dance. What they all share is a masculine softness, cheekiness and humour that is reflected in their faces and demeanor. So Rock the Myrrh fits the swag profile of fragrance that hits me hard. I know, meaningless drivel (except it makes perfect sense to me).

What do I smell then? The opening moments are sharp woods and that familiar, fun sweet sizzle of pink pepper. It’s weird to me that no white florals or aldehydes are noted because I distinctly smell both in the first few minutes. As we move towards the heart a resinously sweet amber is met with a lightly shorn patchouli. There are hints of its earthy, head shop roots.  I’m going to be totally honest here. I love myrrh perfumes, they always seem to be beautiful and swoon worthy. Here’s the thing though, I’m not exactly sure what myrrh smells like alone. I’ve even smelled beads of myrrh but the fragrances never match my scent memory.

Rock the Myrrh has a beautiful airiness as we head towards dry down. Which is weird for something so resinous and now leathery. It’s like I’m smelling everything from across a room. It does not collapse though. The fragrance holds tight for a few hours till I get nose blind. Others can smell it MUCH longer than I can.

Rock the Myrrh is beautiful, interesting and well worth a sniff. At this price for a bottle though I’m going to pass and enjoy my decant to the last drops.

Patty wrote about Dries Van Noten par Frederic Malle, the OG and I think one of his absolute best. This way back in 2013! What!?!

So, Rock the Myrrh. Sound good? Like you could?

I have come across this line several times but the price makes it a “no”, unless Tinkerbelle herself gathered the ingredients, then created the perfume and gave it to the gods of Olympus who made it their new magic elixir.
Seriously though, we may all be getting used to seeing the insane prices but there is a limit for me. I can deal (just) with $300+ for something I really love, but I stop at $400 and above.

  • March says:

Oh, this sounds interesting! I like the DvN Malle very much. I love your description of how your men all have this commonality, makes sense to me. I have burned myrrh resin and don’t love it on its own but I bet this is great.

    • Portia says:

Yeah March that Malle was spectacular. I remember it selling out really quickly too. Enforced short run?
Yeah, this smells nothing like that weird dark smokiness from burning the myrrh tears.

This reads really nice but I am sorry but for $400 USD for 100ML I don’t think I need even a decant..

  • Dina C. says:

Sounds like Rock the Myrrh is a good match for your taste and for your seasonal weather, Portia. Enjoy every drop of that decant!

I have not managed to sample the Malle DvN which I heard and read is wonderful. This sounds well worth a look but we’ll see about finding it… The notes list is quite intriguing.

The FM DvM was so beautiful, I got a couple of the travel sprays as soon as they became available & still have one left.
All the DvN bottles are stunning but I haven’t yet sampled any of them. I try not to sample what I cannot afford to buy a bottle of. This does sound glorious though. Right up my strasse in autumn & winter
