Goose Egg

Remember us?

My darling Posse

It’s HARVEST! here in the Midwest and I was going to say ‘I Got Nothin’… but I do have a few things.  To wit:

  1. I have THE most inflamed sinuses – my upper sinuses and soft palate are just sore and the soft palate inflammation means I can’t really taste much, which also means I am over-seasoning my food with chiles and my stomach is OW!  Bicarb for the Win (oddly enough I can taste that!)
  2. I have the ITCHIEST skin right now.  Corn dust/bean dust – and it’s everywhere!  And those vicious midges with the 4 inch fangs are out in force having been evicted from the fields as the combines set upon them.  Shower is a morning and evening Must Do!
  3. Gardening.  There’s a No Bite window, which I am using every minute of – moving hostas ahead of the Bobcat (or beensy tractor, whichever one is available without a lot of hissing).  Those hostas!  Every one of them about 3′ in diameter at the root.  At this point I should be RRRIIIPPPED! Alas, I’m not.  But I am glad I spend so much time at the gym – it’s probably saving my … well, pretty much everything!  But I still have about 20 hostas to go.  Okay… 10.  But it feels like 100, so I’m going with 20.
  4. It’s so weird to not be able to smell anything!  If I didn’t have this experience this time every year I might be concerned – but it’s Harvest and I live in the rural Midwest.  So it’s Tuesday.
  5. Goose Egg.  Why, you might ask (if you’re still here, though if you ran off, screeching, I wouldn’t be surprised).  My neighbor just gave me one of his ladies’ eggs.  I’d forgotten how damb BIG! they are.  And how tough their shells are.  And so rich!  I wish I’d thought to keep it until I could taste it better but the mouthfeel was amazing!  A few years back he gave me 6 – and I made soft scrambled eggs with lobster, thyme and mascarpone (one of my favorite brunch dishes) for a brunch… for six.  And there was enough to serve 8, easily!  And MAYNE! was it delicious!  I first had that dish at the Prescott Hotel in San Francisco and have made it for special occasions (like Sunday) ever since.

And that’s all I gotz!  Oh!  Except I just came back from my friends’ pasture, picking up (literally, with a manure fork) a good-sized bag of horse manure – it’ll go into my compost tumbler to cook over the winter.  There are some bison in Mr M’s field but he’d already spread their manure … what a strange life I am now leading!  Ah, well.  At least the hostas will appreciate it, come Spring.

What’s new with you?  Are you getting buttoned up for Winter?  Because it is Coming.  Except for Portia and other Southern H’ers  – you’re probably starting to open up your world!

Tell me how you’re faring in the Comments!  Sorry I’m such a LOSER this week but except for the Goose Egg and the horse manure… I truly gotz NUTHIN’!!!
