Venturing Out and FM Northern Love

So we are off of Daylight Savings time, which gave us an extra hour to doze. Or, since it was Halloween in West Hollywood, an extra hour to party. Since my partying days went out with hoop skirts, I stayed in. Besides, it rained. And I am trying to get over the flu.

I was at the point where I was getting stir crazy, which I guess meant that I was getting better. So I decided to try to get into the new Horror exhibit at the Academy Museum, which I had tried two weeks ago to get into but was thwarted. They had had a black-tie event the night before and closed without notice for the load-out. As a paying member an email would have been nice, but I just went to LACMA next door. I went on Sunday to see the Horror exhibit, but was thwarted again- I did walk in but the whole thing is in literally pitch dark. Like you can’t see a thing. The last time I was in a room that dark that was full of strangers was in the 80’s at the Ramrod or the Mineshaft or something, and even then the light was better. I’ll come back with a flashlight.

Diver is across the street behind the Waymo car.

Since I didn’t feel like spending $16 to park, I took the bus over there, and obviously had to do the same to go back home. So I get on the Wilshire Blvd bus towards Westwood. The driver decided to engage a man at the stoplight at Crescent Heights wearing a Steelers jersey about a bar or something on the corner who did sports things, then. leaving the bus running, went across the street to investigate. I really just wanted to take the keys and leave, but that would have been silly. And perhaps actionable. So I didn’t. I did walk over to the Beverly Center and checked out the Apple store and the new iPhone Duo. There has been quite a bit of press on this since it’s Apple’s first folding phone and costs more than twice what the most expensive one does. Because it folds. And, apparently (in some cases) fails. Like the screen goes wonky after you dare fold it. My take? I don’t need one. I have a phone and an iPad and this seems like both a worse phone (oddly shaped and very heavy) and a worse iPad (oddly shaped, too heavy, and too small) So I saved $2500. Yay me.

Melrose Place Farmers Market

Then I walked up to Melrose Place and the farmer’s market, which is a Sunday thing. Beverly Hills has one at the same time that is my usual, so I rarely go to this one, but I did want to stop by Frederic Malle and sniff the new one, Northern Love. Cinnamon wrote of it earlier in the week and didn’t care for it, writing that it was like “vetiver butter cookies, with a big dose of pine.” I might have liked that better. My nose might still be a bit off, but I got the vetiver and a bit of the speculoos, but it had the undertone of rancid popcorn on me that ruins it. Another few hundred saved. But the staff at that store are delights and the Santa Maria Novella store is right next door, so it’s definitely worth a stop. And Norms and pancakes are right down the street..

Today is Vote day in the US. I voted weeks ago thanks to California’s very liberal (and very well-protected, despite what you may have heard) early voting and vote-by-mail system. I will be glad to no longer see the many ads. Although I do admit the dueling attack ads between Ken Calvert and Young Kim, two Orange County politicos of the same party accusing each other of everything but being responsible for the death of the Black Dahlia and Futurama being cancelled were kind of fun.

So how was your weekend? Let us know in the comments.
