Cuir Cannage by Christian Dior 2014

Hi there Perfumed Posse! I hope life is fragrant where you are. Cuir Cannage from DIOR La Collection Privée range came out in 2014 with much perfumista fanfare. I tried it in South Korea and was immediately underwhelmed. I don’t know what was wrong with me on that day but since then I have drained one 5ml Surrender To Chance decant and am onto my second. It feels a lot like love…..

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Orange blossom, ylang-ylang
Heart: Rose, jasmine, iris
Base: Birch, juniper, leather

When I first spritz my immediate impression is how delightfully retro Cuir Cannage smells. It opens like something I’ve bought from a vintage store, maybe it’s the base which seems to be right there in your face in the opening moments with a deliciously indolic orange blossom and creamy ylang. All together for about 10 seconds I am a movie star spritzing in the limousine before being usher onto the red carpet and into an event. The heavy make up, my fur coat, leather purse and the hairspray all combine with the soft hint of excitement perspiration and my dates cologne.

Soon after though I am head first in a new-ish handbag that has a bunch of fragrant decants and a couple of lipsticks, a pressed powder and lip liner, a Glo-Mesh purse filled with crisp colourful Australian polymer money (which has a smell all its own) and a Glo-Mesh cigarette case and ladies Zippo lighter. This is what I smell.

A warm and sweet leather fragrance that has so many beautiful facets and goes through distinct metamorpheses and finally after hours of joyful sniffing we end up with a lovely creamy leather. A worn leather with hints of the tanning process but mainly we smell the covering fragrances and the warm body of the wearer, maybe they’ve just taken it off.

Whenever I wear Cuir Cannage my head turns to Guerlain, it’s not a particularly Guerlain fragrance and certainly it lacks their sweet vanilla/amber dry down trade mark, but this is a fragrance that I would love to see in the Guerlain line up. It would fit the bill I think.

  1. I absolutely adore Cuir Cannage Portia! I get a very sexy dry down which makes it my favorite purchase last year. Sandra xo

  2. The first time I tried CC I got iris and expensive leather hand-bag. The second time I tried it I just remember that i didn’t enjoy it. I did spray heavily and think maybe it was too harsh. Time to try again. You make it sound so good, Portia. A comparison to Guerlain will get me going any day.

  3. Howdy, dear! I try to keep close tabs on all the Dior new releases, but this one somehow escaped me. Maybe I was in the midst of some mini-crisis or another or something, ha! Anyhoo, you can bet I will be getting a sample soon, especially with fall coming on over here. Thanks!!

    • I remember it coming out Ann because I got to smell it in South Korea before it got to Australia. I was less than thrilled that first sniff but blame that I was wearing about 7 or 8 other frags on my body at the time.
Can’t wait to hear what you think if you do try it.

  4. Loved your detailed description of what this smelled like to you, Portia. I could really picture this glamorous gal all dolled up. I love a floral leather in the fall, so I need to sniff this one sometime this month.

  5. I really like this one – it’s rather similar to Cuir de Lancome with that handbag/makeup vibe. I have to say, though, that it doesn’t seem like a Guerlain at all to me. I kept thinking, “Now wait… this IS Dior, right? It’s not Chanel? No. Not Chanel. Smells like a Chanel.” In any case, I think it’s lovely.

    As an aside, what’s Glo-Mesh?

    • Hey there Malsnano86,
Yes, it is a little similar to Cuir de Lancome but I find it less sweetly smooth. As to the CHANEL-ness, yes you have a very valid reference but it doesn’t have that ultra cool subtlety that I always associate with the CHANEL exclusives. It’s more in my face and bold, then again 22 is pretty big. I don’t think it smells like a Guerlain but it does have that Guerlain of old “I’m Here!-ness”. I explain myself badly.
What I am glad about is that you like it, me too. It’s a lovely fragrance and I hope it does well for them. Almost everything I love from this line gets the chop.

  6. I adore this scent. To me, it smells as if I had been doing something naughty while wearing a leather jacket, and am now reclining beside a vase full of violets, remembering, and smelling the faint remains of his cigar. Carnal and smoky with the leather and violets that Jolie Madam used to have.
I need a FB of this someday
