SOTD 24.7.2020

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else SOTD choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and Perfume Posse people love to chat. We like to keep it fragrant but there’s always room for life events and adventures too. This is our place to share how we smell, live, love, eat, work, raise kids and pets and get on with the business of living.

Perfume Posse SOTD

SOTD 24.7.2020

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz. Whenever you feel the mood take you, share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at Perfume Posse, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your SOTD comment. Then you can reply to them, and so on.

Go To It Crew.

Stereoplasm’s Sensation Vulgaris (jasmine/lilac/skin musk/sage/white pepper) and Monster Frog, which is a mashup of Monster Parts (tomato leaf/salt/camphor/ozone/Indica) and Pickerel Frog (Night blooming jasmine, wet grass, algae, and tomato leaf) this am. These are both wonderful. I’m particularly enamored of Sensation Vulgaris.

  • Carolyn says:

One of those days where I somehow ended up wearing 5 different perfumes at once …all Possets. Girls Love Vanilla (honeycomb, Vanilla, yellow pear), Silver Rose (Possets silver base and rose), Terra Nocturna (discontinued but I’m in love and owner said he still has some and is making me a bottle), Hatshepsut (galbanum, labdanum, a bit of oude gum, and skin amber) and Shah Jahan and Mumtez Mahal (Bulgarian zdravetz, ylang ylang, red musk, patchouli oude and Tahitian vanilla bean).

  • Portia says:

Vintage Vol de Nuit extrait from the cigarette lighter case. SO glam and gorgeous.
    Perfect warm winter wear.

  • Melanie says:

Atlas, by Laboratory Perfumes for me today. I don’t get the tobacco note – more hay, vanilla and cinnamon with a sprinkle of pepper. It’s quite smooth and has a softness – would love it to last a bit longer though.

  • SonomaVelvet says:

I think I missed yesterday so here’s a 2 for one. Yesterday I was in the divinely elegant and somehow just ‘womanly’ Aqua de Parma’s Magnolia Nobile.. so rich and lovely in the heat. And today for something equally gorgeous but completely different Hermes Rose Ikebana. You know sometimes a lot of time goes by and I forgot about JC Ellena’s creations. I often think they are too subtle for me but then I put one on and mmmmm, why don’t I wear this more often????? So cool and crisp and perfect in the heat.

    • Portia says:

      Interesting Carolyn,
Yeah, I think a few people pass the JCE Hermès by because they aren’t as flamboyant and Perfumistas-ish as many other offerings. They take time to know.

  • Brigitte says:

Commando right now. Not sure what I will put on yet.

  • Portia says:

Today is a sunshiny winters day.
CHANEL 1957 is my choice. Its low key beauty fits the day perfectly. I’m taking a mate out for birthday high tea. YAY!
    Portia xx

    • Brigitte says:

      Lovely!!! Have fun!!!!

    • SonomaVelvet says:

Birthday high tea!! What a fabulous thing to do on a birthday. I need to smell 1957, I’ve read so much about it. I have to go to a different city to smell anything beyond mainstream chanel so I’m really behind but this one keeps getting mentioned…

      • Portia says:

It was excellent SV, we went to a place with an amazing view of the harbour and Sydney CBD called the Gunners Barracks. A repurposed military enclave that is now about education, recreation and food.
1957 is the same as every other modern musk but feels like it’s done with the best possible ingredients. I like it because it fits so many moods and is never overwhelming.

  • Carolyn says:

Today I’m wearing Possets Big Black Cat. Notes are: caramel, bourbon, vanilla, burnt sugar, cinnamon, clove, allspice. It’s definitely a sweet scent but the spices keep it from becoming teeth achingly so. Can’t see myself using up a full size but I’ll probably use up the sample over time because it’s different from anything else I own.

  • Brigitte says:

Reglisse Noire and I think this particular botte will be a thunk by the end of the day. I still have Portia’s bottle and I still have the most current bottle waiting in the wings.

  • SonomaVelvet says:

So, speaking of carefully managing the last bits of a decant. I wore the absolutely incredible Annick Goutal Neroli cologne today. Not from a decant but from a cherished almost empty bottle sob!!! It’s so good. I don’t think I’ve smelled a neroli as perfect and I’ve tried so many. It’s just effortless. Really fragrant and light and airy at the same time. Oh how I wish it was easier to get than paying Obscene amounts for it on eBay the odd time it pops up.
Funny, it’s easy to see the acquiring part of this perfume hobby/er obsession maybe, thinking about them, reading about them, testing them, saving for them, trying really hard not to go crazy getting too many of them…. But when you’ve been doing it long enough you start to see it’s also about letting go, enjoying the ephemeral with joy, and letting it go with gratitude, and surrendering to trust that there will be another one to come along, to fall in love with.

    • Maya says:

What a lovely sentiment. You are so right!

    • Brigitte says:

Your last sentence…. sublime….and so true! I’ve been wearing fragrance for more than half a century and agree wholeheartedly that another true love always comes along. So don’t mourn your AG Neroli. Enjoy every last whiff.

  • Portia says:

Oud Ispahan by DIOR. I’ve had this bottle for years but been living on a large decant till now. Got it out of it’s box a little while ago and it feels so good to spritz with abandon, instead of eeking out my decant.
    Portia xx

    • SonomaVelvet says:

Oh, I love that feeling. after careful midgy little bits to savour so carefully, to finally be able to just luxuriate in spraying and smelling and spraying some more, and again the next day if you’re like me.

  • Melanie says:

Lovers Complain, by Shakespeare Perfume. A beautiful leather scent – juniper, and amber in a super fancy bottle.

    • Portia says:

Those Shakespeare Perfume bottles are gorgeous too, eh Melanie? So hefty and they feel really good in my hand.
      Portia xx

  • Brigitte says:

    Reglisse Noire to bed

  • Brigitte says:

Change of plans… Incense Pure today

  • Portia says:

    Inspired my Melanie,
    Fat Electrician!
    Portia xx

  • Melanie says:

ELDO Fat Electrician is my perfume choice today – love it.

  • SonomaVelvet says:

I love Puredistance 1. Love it, and have been living from sample to sample for years. I really do like this gorgeous peaceful calm coolness. I feel like I’m walking in a cool green forest beside a creek burbling away when I wear this, I think a wood nymph would smell like this.
But…. it is soooo expensive, I just can’t pay that much for it. I have spent that much before for other perfumes but this one is just a bit too quiet and not long lived enough (I know it’s based on dabbers and spraying could be quite different). So, I seem to keep loving it 1 ml at a time.

  • Brigitte says:

So I started my morning walk in Winter Woods. Post shower I combined Oui Plus, Vanille Sauvage de Madagascar and Somei Yoshino…the eldest came home for a brief visit…said “what smells so good?” Took all three full bottles…then announced she’s obsessed with Burberry so I gave her Brit Parfum…..thunkX4

    • SonomaVelvet says:

Oh my, 4 gone in one thunk. I wonder if you’ll miss any of them. Looks like you held on to the winter woods though?

      • Brigitte says:

I tend to give things away when someone says they really, really love something. I won’t miss anything knowing that I have made someone happy. I have plenty of other bottles to love, including Winter Woods which might be my next thunk.

    • Portia says:

OMG! You are a MACHINE! 4 frags gone in one visit. Woo Hoo Brigitte.
      Portia xx

  • Carolyn says:

More Death and Floral today. I swear Brim is a genius….I love almost every perfume of hers I’ve tried. Today it’s The woman and her time-traveling picnic basket. Notes according to D&F: golden amber, dry sage, buckwheat honey, and orange blossoms.

  • Teresa says:

I’m a newbie here and late to the party. Today I’m wearing Dame Perfumery Black Flower Mexican Vanilla. I love vanilla fragrances that have a touch of wood and spice and aren’t too sweet.

O/T – I’ve noticed references here to a Facebook doc for perfume sales. Can you point me to it? I have an extensive fragrance collection that due to age, widowhood and moving house, I have to pare down. Sad to see my lovelies go but needs must.

    • Brigitte says:

oOoOO!!! Love Black Flower Mexican Vanilla!!!!

    • Portia says:

      Hey Teresa,
Welcome. So good to see someone new here.
Not late. We do this every week and all pile on all week till the next one.
If you are in the USA then Facebook Fragrance Friends is a good choice. They have Sale Docs but you might want to go and join in the conversation for a couple of months so people get to know and trust you before you start offloading your stuff. When you join make sure to answer all four questions so they will let you in.
      Portia xx

      • Teresa says:

Thank for the good advice, Portia. I will head over there and join. This is such a warm and friendly place. I love reading of everyone’s fragrance choices and hearing of some new scents to check out.

  • SonomaVelvet says:

SSS Voile de Violet. So warm and rich and gorgeous. And literally one teensy little spray fills the whole house all day.

  • Portia says:

Palissandre d’Or by Aedes de Venustas. Just picking up this bottle brings me joy. I love the way they designed it, so cool. Also, smoky brown glass is my favourite.
Woodsy McWoodserson with a dark patchouli

    • SonomaVelvet says:

mroowwwwwoooorrrrr Portia. That sounds amazing. I’ve never smelled that one or I don’t think even ever read anything about it. I love their Ouillet Bengale and am nursing a last few mls before it will be gone gone.

  • Brigitte says:

Winter Woods again today. Not smoky or woody at all . Just a gorgeous vanillic amber.

  • Maya says:

Amouage Portrayal Woman. It’s a nice one but doesn’t cross the line to “I want it.”

    • Portia says:

I’m still to get a sniff on the Portrayals Maya. I’ve been so lazy about new recently.
I net your wallet heaved a sigh of relief!

    Molinard Violette today

  • Portia Turbo says:

Ambre Nuit by DIOR today. It was really flat and lifeless in this cool, muggy, rainy weather. Couldn’t even recognise it. About to take a bath and then put something sensational on. News as it comes to hand.
    Portia x

    • Brigitte says:

I find that so many of my perfumes go flat on my skin in the cooler weather. There’s something about the heat of summer that makes them bloom and sing on me….most especially the gourmands and orientals.

      • Portia says:

That’s really interesting Brigitte. I’m now trying to think if it’s been happening very much lately but my mind is mush and I can’t think of anytime in the recent past.
Ambre Nuit usually performs beautifully in the cool. I’m wondering if it was just me having an off day. Went to bed last night scent free to see if a little break might wake my senses back up.

  • SonomaVelvet says:

Wore Dior Addict on one side today. I knew I was going to be around people who love that one on me though I don’t know if they were picking it up 6 ft away. It’s warm spicy vanilla goes with campfire really well. And I really craved green white flowers too, so wore Donna Karen Gold on the other side. I love anything lily so that one is perfect for me. It took me a while to enjoy it even though it is a beautiful green lily scent but it has a little bit of a smokey almost cigarette smell in there that threw me off at first. I used it on my curtains at first but now I’ve been wearing it and enjoying it enough I’m noticing the bottle’s less than full. Going to have to start wondering if there’s any more of this discontinued lovely out there.

    • Portia Turbo says:

      WOW! Two fabulous scents SV,
Yeah, you can often find Donna Karen Gold floating around FaceBook Sale Docs. Not so terribly expensive to pick up a used bottle, yet.

  • Eldarwen22 says:

Tested Demeter Elvira Vamp this morning. I was so happy to get into the shower because it was nasty smelling to my nose. Since I am post shower, I am thinking of putting on Shalimar Ode a la Vanille.

  • Brigitte says:

In bed with Winter Woods. I love it in the heat. This full bottle might be my next thunk.

  • Anca says:

Just discovered Diptyque’s Olene and I’m in love. That kind of love that slips through your fingers just like this beautiful and addictive perfume is disappearing in half an hour. Still I love it.

  • Brigitte says:

Fragrance combining Basil & Neroli and Wood Sage and Sea Salt. Thunk to two travel sprays after 16 sprays of each all over post shower.

  • SonomaVelvet says:

Guerlain AA Herba Fresca. Was perfect for a hot and muggy day and to my surprise lasted all day. If I put my nose to my wrist and really huff I can still smell it. It almost has a texture, its so cool and refreshing. Slight sweetness, and slight green but not sharp at all, just feels like lazing on cool grass in the shade looking out at the lake.

    • Portia says:

      What an excellent description SV,
      You should be writing fragrance.
      Portia xx

      • SonomaVelvet says:

Thanks Portia. Coming from you that’s really saying something. I’m enjoying hanging out in here with you guys.

    • Brigitte says:

Sounds lovely. I really need to explore the AA line.

      • SonomaVelvet says:

I seem to cave in and buy at least one every summer. Not always the newest, sometimes it’s a replacement. I’ve burned through 3 or 4 bottles of Mandarin Basilic. They seem to suit me perfectly in summer, and for a reasonable price and reasonably easy to test and get my hands on.

        • Brigitte says:

Yes, they sound perfect for summer and lavish spraying. I see them discounted and the bottles are quite pretty.

  • Portia says:

  • Rachel says:

I hadn’t tried any Amouage perfumes despite reading about them for years, and just ordered some samples to try. I have Epic Woman on today and love the cinnamon opening notes. Working from home has allowed me to go back to wearing perfume every day (there are a few chemically sensitive people in my office so I try to be considerate), and I can also risk new perfumes on workdays since if it’s too strong or not to my liking the only ones I’ve annoyed are my spouse and dog.

    • SonomaVelvet says:

Yes it’s like cinnamon and sandalwood with some roses isn’t it? Did you enjoy it? I love that one.

    • Portia says:

Work From Home has enabled us to all really embrace our perfume loves. It’s one of the small things that we can be super thankful for Rachel. I’m hearing loads of friends saying how much they’ve enjoyed the ability to work fully fragranced.

  • Dina C. says:

Wearing the hard-to-find Donna Karan Iris. Love it. Has ambrette seed, vetiver, violet, magnolia and rose to round out the iris. Projection/sillage/lasting power is only fair however.

    • Portia says:

      Hi DinaC,
I had a bottle of this, the black column. One of my friends loved it too much so I moved it on to her. NOW you remind me it was SO good.

  • SamanthaL says:

I’m in Ds & Durga Debaser today, lovely fig and pears. I bought it originally untested because I had to have any perfume inspired by a Pixies song…fortunately I loved it and use it often during the summer. I always get complimented by women when I wear it.

    • Portia says:

I love that it’s women who love it on you SamanthaL. Interesting that it is more inviting to them, making you approachable.

  • Carolyn says:

I’ve been unpacking decants that have been in bins in the back of my closet for 3 years since my cross country move and have discovered many that are fully/nearly evaporated. Last night right before bed I decided to use the rest of the little bit of Ineke Chemical Bonding in bottom of the decant. Didn’t recall what it smelled like but thought I remembered enjoying it. Well either my memory was wrong or its nature changed dramatically due to evaporation cause it was hella strong and quite chemical (hence the name…duh Carolyn) and not what you want to be wearing overnight. Why is it that the pleasant fumes go away too fast and the fumes you don’t like have the half-life of plutonium? It was as strong and fully present when I woke up as when I went to bed!

    • Portia says:

Great way to use up your decants though Carolyn. You might want to try a little bit though in the morning pre shower, like a test run for tonights main event. That way you can edit your choices a bitt but you also can wash it off if it’s AWFUL!
      Portia xx

  • Musette says:

I’m in 22 sort of by default. I was organizing ……
but what a glorious ‘default’ – and my bedroom smells AMAZING!!!

    xoxoxo

    • SamanthaL says:

My husband was organizing my closet for me recently and broke my large decant of Profumum Dolce Acqua…which, if you don’t know is nuclear strength vanilla, almond, honey and coconut! The entire upstairs smelled lovely for at least a week!

    • Portia says:

Woo Hoo Musette! No 22 is a high octane glamour girl. Sadly the aldehydes have started attacking me in No 22 and I can’t wear it anymore. Had to move my 200ml EdT on and a vintage extrait. A very sad day at Chez Portia.
      Portia xx

  • LaDona says:

I’m in San Diego, where it’s been cool and somewhat cloudy, so today I’m wrapped up in Akkad, by Lubin. I love it so much, I just bought three bottles! Shame on me!

    • Portia says:

O M G! Three bottles. You ARE a fan LaDona.
What is it that particularly hits the spot for you about it?

  • Carolyn says:

Orange Sanguine by Atelier Cologne because the high temps and humidity are coming back today. A happy burst of orange, from the fridge.

  • Queen-Cupcake says:

First thing I reached for this morning: Paco Rabanne Metal. Dunno why, because Calandre is usually my choice for warm & humid weather. Kind of strange name for something so green (a la 1970s green chypre), and pretty, too.

  • Cinnamon says:

Today is grey and very humid. Not as warm as it has been and it rained overnight. The plants surely need it. Dior Eau Noire today — all about immortelle and that hay and tobacco thing. I wasn’t sure when I put it on but it’s actually perfect.

    • Portia says:

I love Eau Noire Cinnamon, It’s only recently that my bottle has made it out of the cupboard and onto the easy reach shelf. Getting loads more wear now.

El L’Aime by Lempicka all day.

Tonight I’m wearing Oriental Brulant by Guerlain. MMMMMM

  • Brigitte says:

Oooo! I am the first! Going with EA Green Tea again and maybe all week in order to thunk this baby. It’s 100ml with maybe 1/8 left. There’s a part of me that would like to go back to the old days of no more than 7 bottles in rotation. It just seems easier and simplistic which is pretty much my life’s theme these days. So no new purchases until I thunk down the collection.
