Roses Vanille by Mancera

Hey there Posse! Now that I’ve worked out that Australia is heading towards summer and you lot up north are heading towards the cold I think today’s perfume choice will be perfectly cosy and cuddly for the deep freeze. Mancera itself started production in 2008 and Roses Vanille came along in 2011. Can you believe it? I’m getting so old that Mancera still feels like a relatively new company, HA! At 13 years old it’s practically a dinosaur. I know a bunch of you heavily hard core perfumistas turn your nose up at Mancera but among the millions of nearly exactly the same releases under different names there is some gold.

My sample came with an order from Libertine in Sydney.

I also love Red Tobacco and The Aoud

Roses Vanille by Mancera

Libertine gives these featured accords:
Top: Fresh Lemon of Calabria
Heart: Turkish Delight with Rose
Base: Cedarwood, Intense Vanilla, White Musk

Though Roses Vanille came out 4 years before Baccarat Rouge 540 there are marked similarities. No, it’s not the same but it is as sweet. Especially on open. I can’t wear it on my chest (or BR540, or any of the imitators) because if I do it’s instant headache. I need to spritz knees, back and wrists. From that distance I can enjoy the Turkish Delight/Marshmallow cuddly puffs that pump out. I even start to get headaches if someone wears a large amount of these perfumes and sits near me, I’m really sad about it because the scent itself is gorgeous.

Once that searing open calms down I can actually start to smell the lemons. It’s really nice. A tart softening of the sweetness that gives it depth and a bit more structure. This is when I start to love Roses Vanille. The heart is so more-ish. It now reminds me of those round tins of Travel Lollies. Remember them? They were square hard lollies in fruity flavours. Quite sweet but also just a little tart. Mum always had them in the car or for aeroplane take offs and landings.

Roses Vanille by Mancera bottle

The base is lemon scented spun sugar rather than vanilla per se, even though that’s what’s on the label. At no point do I get vanilla bean, vanilla extract, bakery or hints of Shalimar. It should be called Roses Turkish Delight or Roses Fairy Floss or Rose Pastilles.

This skews so outrageously traditional femme that it feels subversive to wear it in my man garb. So that’s a gold plated win for me. Longevity and projection are off the charts. If you care for the people around you in any way you’ll go easy in enclosed spaces.

Is it good? Yes. Do I want a bottle? No. This 2ml carded sample will last me years. It must still be popular though because Mancera releases and DCs in the blink of an eye and Roses Vanille is still available in E-tailers. It’s also available on the discounters for a song.

Are you a Roses Vanille fan?

I remember liking it after it calmed down. At first it was so marshmallowy it was like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters was trying to get a little too fresh..

  • Maggiecat says:

I love the blend of lemon and rose, but not so sure about all the sweetness. You make it sound worth a try though!

    • Portia says:

If sweet is not your thing MaggieCat then stay far away from Roses Vanille. Wearing it I was worried I might lose a toe to diabetes.

Portia, If Roses Vanille is too strong for you, it would unalive me! Haha You describe it so vividly though. I’m test driving 2 scents from Arielle Shoshanna today for my daughter and her fiance’ for their wedding day. Liis Of True Minds and Liis Rose Struck. OTM is a spicy blast, unisex, lovely. Rose Struck is a rose with blackcurrant, kinda tangy. Thanks for your review!

I love lemon smells! This sounds like I must go and investigate getting a sample of!

  • March says:

Huh. I’m not a big fan of rose as you know but I bet I’d like this one with those other notes. And I bet it smells absolutely amazing on you! I love “femme” scents on men every bit as much as I love “masculines” on women.

    • Portia says:

It’s pretty amazing March, in small doses. After that it becomes insufferable for any length of time.
Yeah, I like sexual ambiguity with fragrance. Feels so subversive.

Thanks for this review! For some reason, I’ve developed a fascination with Montale and Mancera. I’ve not sampled any of Mancera but Roses Vanilla intrigues me.

I’m pretty sure I’ve tried this & have a sample knocking around. Cannot for the life of me recall how it smells though

This post sent me looking for my sample of Love Don’t Be Shy. Definitely don’t need a full bottle but it is wonderful every once in a while.
