Baccarat Rouge 540 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian 2015

Hey Posse Peeps, Not so long ago I bought a bottle of Lumière Noire home from Maison Francis Kurkdjian. With it came a carded 2ml spray sample of Baccarat Rouge 540. TBH I completely missed this fragrance even being launched. The other day though my mate Ainslie, who is up with EVERYTHING fragrant, told me that Baccarat Rouge 540 had become MFKs best selling scent. That’s a big deal. Considering how popular many of his fragrances are, how topical he is now the house has sold to LVMH and how respected he is as a perfumer I thought it high time I spent some real time with this new superstar on my skin.

Baccarat Rouge 540 Maison Francis Kurkdjian FragranticaFragrantica

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Jasmine, saffron
Heart: Amberwood
Base: Fir resin, cedar

First created as a parfum to celebrate the 250th birthday of Baccarat Crystal in 2014. In 2015 the EdP was released into the MFK regular range.

How does it smell? The first thing that jumps out at me is the saffron and wood. Amber wood is a perfect description, it is both resinous with the lovely furriness that entails and woodsy. Now don’t go expecting a lumberjack fragrance, though it would be perfect on one. Here we have a smooth, slightly animalic, expensive smelling fragrance that creates an ambience around you like a 21st century movie star. This is so unusual yet seems as if I’ve known it all my life. A warm, comfortable and exciting scent that takes all the cynical, boorish niche malarky and dips in it rose gold then wraps it in velvet.

Underneath the beauty I smell blood, the sharp tang of metal and the last cold char of incense. Baccarat Rouge 540 makes me wonder if this how some healthy, wealthy, fur clad person would smell to a vampire.

I am now about to go buy myself a bottle. How in the holy heck did I miss the magic of Baccarat Rouge 540, it’s like I’ve been living under a rock..

I tried this from a small dab sample received from a kind friend months ago. Like Tara C i must be anosmic to something in there, all I got was a fruity, sweet perfume, much like many much cheaper offerings. Don’t want perfume smelling like boiled raspberry candy or similar, so will pass on this one.

Thank you for the link <3

  • Tara C says:

I am totally anosmic to whatever is in this. Wish I could smell what you are smelling!

    • Portia says:

So interesting that you say the TaraC,
I was out sniffing with friends today and I spritzed 3 big ones onto my arm and he could not smell a thing. Amazing.

I agree that there are too many new fragrances, not only to be aware of, but to even sample, not to mention actually purchasing. However, I have had a bottle of Baccarat Rouge since it was made available to the rest of us. I own more bottles of perfumes that I could ever use in five live-times, but this one is unlike anything else that I own and I could not compare to any other perfume I have sampled thus far in my lifetime. It is an elegant, classy and dressy perfume, which I could picture would go well for very dressed up occasions, or cocktail parties, but I wore it once to a bar for happy hour and got lots of compliments.

      YAY Filomena813,
      It’s quite delicious.
we were comparing it today to mashed jelly babies and metallic zings. Very cool frag.

Oh my god, I actually spit coffee reading that line about “this how some healthy, wealthy, fur clad person would smell to a vampire” — DYING. I haven’t smelled this one, either, but now I’m intrigued!

  • Tiara says:

I’m convinced I’m on another planet, not under a rock, because so many of the better new releases have escaped my attention. This sounds like something my sister-in-law would wear and love so thanks for bringing it to my attention.

    • Portia says:

      Hey Tiara,
Don’t beat yourself up. There are SO MANY new frags it’s impossible to keep abreast.
Your sister in law must have a very luxe taste palette.

  • This sounds magnificent, Portia. Thanks for sharing. R
