SOTD 29.5.2020

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else SOTD choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and Perfume Posse people love to chat. We like to keep it fragrant but there’s always room for life events and adventures too. This is our place to share how we smell, live, love, eat, work, raise kids and pets and get on with the business of living.

Perfume Posse SOTD

SOTD 29.5.2020

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz. Whenever you feel the mood take you, share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at Perfume Posse, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your SOTD comment. Then you can reply to them, and so on.

Go To It Crew.

Yesterday evening I wore Dior Oud Ispahan.
Today it’s Amor Amor by Cacharel.
Opposite ends of the fragrant spectrum but both knockouts for me.
We have sunshine but it’s only warm when it’s directly on me, otherwise it’s a bit chilly.

Any Zoologist perfume fans? I have previously fallen in love with Bee and Beaver. Today I’m trying samples of Sloth (my spirit animal) and Hyrex. These are much more animalic than the B’s I tried earlier.

Sloth has Chamomile, acai berry, lavender, violet leaf, marigold, beeswax, anise, jatamansi, jasmine, cumin, hay, frankincense, myrrh, mushroom, oakmoss, vanilla, tonka. Quite the interesting combo of notes. I definitely smell a moss covered sloth moving amongst the trees and languidly munching on flowers.

Hyrax has a dry desert feel to it. Notes are Blackberry, elemi, pink pepper, saffron, Turkish rose, African Stone, hyacinth, styrax, whiskey, amber, benzoin, musks, patchouli, sandalwood, tonka. I have a very strong preference for Sloth over Hyrax.

My spouse physically recoiled from the Hyrax, saying it smells like scat and she is now threatening to refuse to smell any perfumes on my arm that she is unfamiliar with because she says this is the 2nd time I’ve unexpectedly traumatized her by asking her to sniff a perfume I was testing. Previously she used a 2 category system for commenting on my perfume…1) smells like perfume and 2) smells like bug spray. She says she needs to add a third category now…3) smells like scat.

And I have now learned what “African Stone” actually is…so my spouse was 100% correct. Hyrax perfume literally has scent of petrified excretement as one of it’s components. I am NOT telling her that though because she will try to scrub out her nostrils and will never let me forget that I wore and made her smell fossilized poo.

Hey Carolyn,
It happens.
Jin was having nightmares when I wore some of the early Slumberhouse fragrances. I think three different perfumes from the house gave him terrifying, wake up in a sweat, don’t go back to sleep horrors. So the house was banned in our house.
I sold them all on. Sad that I did but…

It’s my at home day as my work still on reduced hours so skipping out the NR house just for today because I’m going thru some samples making way for some newbies. I may have ordered up a few or more as LKNU were having a little sale.
Tried a few Histoires Parfums already and fallen for 1826 and 1740.
Sampling 2787 perfumes Elixir de Bombe and Masque Mandala – neither grabbing me so will pick a couple of others to try while ironing my shirts and wear watching tv at the same time.

Last night I had a 1am bubble bath and then ended up on a Netflix binge and was still watching when Jin went to work at 5am. The thing I really loved was Charlie Hunnam in the Guy Ritchie adaptation of the Arthurian legend. WOW! It had me on the edge of my seat all the way through. So many excellent actors, I was enthralled.
Perfume wise I wore Cartier Les Heures XI after my bath and today I’m in lashings of Serge Lutens Arabie. Opposite ends of the fragrant spectrum but both so good.

Two more Possets on inside of elbows tonight. Eve, which is described as “a heavy oriental, resplendent with musks, earthy sweetness, lingering and sexy as only that first lady could have been.” I think it’s pretty amazing. Not heavily resinous, actually a little sparkling, but you definitely smell the spices and musk. The other is Min-Min, which I’m also really enjoying. According to Possets website, it’s “Sandalwoods, three of them, combined with the rich enticing scent of leather, a strong and classic patchouli rounds out the central trio.” A little rose as well. Supposedly a “calling blend,” signaling that wearer is on the prowl. I’m not getting a lot of leather with this one so far. Maybe at full drydown. I want full bottles of almost everything I sample from Possets. Fortunately they are oils so a full 6ml bottle that would last me years can be had for $20.

The Santal Musc is fantastic. Well, imo anyway. I managed to snag a small bottle on eBay last year. It is hard to get hold of. I think it started out as a Harrods exclusive, which to me is a bit arsey, and it’s more expensive than the rest of the line. NR would do well not to pi$$ off their core customers – people like me in other words.

Hey Y’all,
Sorry for my lack of commentary this weekend. It’s been our first weekend of allowing 5 guests into our homes at a time here in Oz.
We have had two dinners, a lunch and an afternoon tea since Friday night.
I’m now in the middle of doing the laundry and tidying up a bit. The main clean is going to have to wait till tomorrow as I’ve been doing Guest Cleans every day and I’m over it.
Been wearing a few faves. Divine EdP, Guerlain Oriental Brulant, Rosa Enslaved, Piguet Bois Noir, Neela Vermeire Creations Rahele and some Serge Lutens.
All very fragrant as we now step into winter.

I think that the protests and pandemic combo resulted in an extra-special edition of stress hormone scent alteration last night. I put on Ex Nihilo’s French Affair- a perfume I like and have worn many times before. But, only a few minutes later, I smelled my arm and was suddenly reminded of the balls of a dick I used to date twenty-two years ago. It was a visceral enough memory that I could visualize them and recall the texture and Oh My Lord– these were not balls I wanted to remember.

I did not scrub my arm right away. In retrospect, that would have been the wiser decision. But this is (was?–I may never be able to whiff it again) a perfume I know. It wouldn’t do me like this. It had to be random happenstance. So I waited a few minutes and then sniffed again. Balls. Waited a few minutes. Sniffed. Still balls.

Praise be to spearmint soap and Nasomatto’s Baraonda. They were a salvation last night and I am forever grateful.

I’ve been trying a bunch of things today including Serge Luten’s Cuir Mauresque and Alkemia’s Miel De Sauvage et Tabac. I ultimately layered the two of them as the Alkemia was a bit sweet and the Luten was a bit dry. Tonight I’m confused again by another Possets…Queen of the Night. Another gourmand but not quite. Possets describes it as reminding “one more of Balenciaga’s Les Dix for its “fabric” like component (smells something like silk). Perfumy, foody, gourmand, chic.” It’s been awhile since I sniffed Les Dix but I think that comparison may be apt. I’m also wearing Posset’s Dangerous Oil. Possets describes as “six musks from blackest black up through a rare and gorgeous in itself purple/blue musk hybrid. A good jolt of labdenum and an edge of cognac. The heart note is an entire chypre made only for this project and used for no other.” Possets perfume oils are so intriguing to me…hard to pigeonhole, reminiscent sometimes of classic perfumes, and other times quite edgy. I’m becoming a huge fan!

Wearing two different Possets tonight. Madame X to me is a strange combination of musk/gourmand. Fragrance notes are: Skin musk, wax, cream, lemon zest, champagne, and a kiss of bitter vanilla. My nose just doesn’t know what to make of it. However, when I asked my spouse to smell it, the perfume had exactly the impact that Possets claimed it would have. Her eyes lit up and she started kissing my arm. So…win??!!

I’m also wearing Beatrice, which is a musk-a-palooza. Fragrance notes: Possets silver base, Skin musk, 2 white musks, “Crystalline” musk, and a grey musk. This one is more my thing.

Working my way through a stash of samples that I put away during the last northern hemisphere winter. Wearing Melt My heart by Strangelove NYC on this late spring evening (66F/19C). I loved it last fall, but not now. On me, it’s a twenty minute whirlwind of a lovely date: gourmand chocolate and wine to sex and almost-cigarettes. Fun! But then, only Orris butter (yum!) for perhaps another hour…and then, it’s pretty much done. It has inspired me to consider getting some Orris butter. So, that could be fun.

Testing two samples from Possets today, an indie perfume house with which I have an incredible hit rate. Sex In Heaven on one arm. A lovely blend of coconut and 2 vanillas (Mexican and Tahitian) with some grounding by sandalwood. It’s a very comforting scent but not particularly “sexual” to me. On the other arm is Water Witch. My skin initially amped the mandarin in this one so it came off a bit sharper than I expected for awhile but it’s settling down now and the jasmine and rose hips are coming out to play. Not heavily aquatic thank goodness. More pond than beach or ocean. Fragrance notes of that one according to Possets: aquatic, salt, jasmine, mandarin, rosehip, an underlying hint of animalic essences. I can see full sizing Sex in Heaven (I’m craving comforting vanilla scents these days) but for the moment will just be enjoying the sample of Water Witch until it’s gone.

Wearing a little bit of vintage Skinny Dip, a scent I used to wear as a little girl back in the 70s. Bought this sample at STC to see if it brought back memories. It does, but now that my sense of smell is more refined, I find I don’t like it as much. It smells like cheap drugstore cologne now. But it’s still fun to wear.
