Curious by Britney Spears

Hey Posse. I recently have been going through my collection and trying to find some stuff to offload. During the search I saw a fun black box with 1980s style metallic shapes printed on it. My mind told me it was an Isabey perfume. So I opened it, without reading the label. To my surprise it had a bottle I knew but couldn’t place. A bright blue glass UFO of a bottle that looked like it was made from perspex. I has two little pink hearts attached by a chain. Isabey? Nope. Curious! I can’t stop spritzing and I LOVE the bottle, could it be any more fun?

Parfumo gives these featured accords:
Top: Pear, Lotus, Magnolia
Heart: Pink cyclamen, Jasmine, Tuberose
Base: Blond woods, Vanilla, Sandalwood

I can’t believe this perfume is 16 years old! You can get it for next to nothing nowadays at the discounters.

Curious is a sweet, fruity aquatic fragrance. Imagine how it would smell if you could smell the sensation of bathing under a cold waterfall in warm weather. The pear is kind of apple-ish, the flowers are all jammed together in a bunch and cleaned up of all their naughty and fleshy parts. Curious sparkles, is light and sheer but definitely present. Surprisingly it doesn’t smell cheap and it reminds me of other things I’ve smelled that cost a LOT more. I think a Burberry, a Tocca and a Juicy Couture but can’t place them exactly in my head to spill which.

Every now and then I smell someone in a mall and ask them what that bewitching scent is. Curious trails a lovely green, modern aquatic softness through its heart and goes quietly vanilla later on. It ALWAYS smells like some very expensive niche thing in sillage. Every time I get a curious by Britney Spears answer I’m surprised. It’s obviously why I bought the bottle. Then, like happens so often, it got put away and forgotten.

Do you have any Britneys?

Oh that bottle is adorable, I have such fondness for kitschy bottles with personality. Tocade and Salvador Dali come to mind.

    • Portia says:

      Hey Rosarita313,
YAY! I’m so glad you love it. Kitsch is EXACTLY the word for it. Imagine if you bought a few and leave them to your grandchildren. They would be SO dated and wonderful.

I have never smelled it, nor have I even seen the bottle (not that I recall, anyway) – but my go-to for ‘asking what that fabulous scent is’ ? Usually it’s Clinique Happy (I really orta buy a bottle) or… Juicy Couture. JC was my sister’s favorite scent and whenever I smell it, she’s back with me.

That Curious bottle is FAB, though! I’mo have to troll TJMaxx….. xoxoxo

      Heya Musette,
Juicy Couture! Fabulous tuberose in a cool, dewy, radiant style. I love it.
Little secret. Paris Hilton ripped it off perfectly for Fairy Dust, which you can buy for about $1 at the discounters.

I haven’t really explored celebrity offerings. For starters, they are loaded with fruit and fruit can be iffy for me. After smelling Deneuve, why would I want to smell another fruity celebrity offering? Snobbish? You bet!

    • Portia says:

HA! Yeah, Deneuve is a brilliant fragrance Eldarwen22. Hard to believe it was an AVON perfume. Those were the days.

There have been a few times that, in public, I have asked someone what they were wearing and the answer was always the same – Midnight Fantasy by Britney Spears.

    • Portia says:

      Hey Marsha,
That’s the super crackly vanilla caramelise isn’t it? I get that one a bit too when asking mall scented people.

  • Bee says:

Now I must try Curious! I bought Midnight Fantasy on the recommendation of Chandler Burr. It’s nice but not exactly the ‘masterpiece’ he claimed. Still wondering whether he was kidding and I fell for a perfumister joke….Next time I meet him I might tell him he owes me about $5. 🙂

    • Portia says:

      Hey Bee,
Midnight Fantasy is not for the wearer, it’s for the sniffer in passing. Something happens at about 6 feet distance that makes it smell like a million $$$$ on everyone.
Curious is no masterpiece. It’s a well constructed, fun, cool wash of fruity florals. Smells good, but not Ah May Zing. Incredibly easy wear, especially in the warm weather.

That’s interesting – I’m going to have to dig out my bottle and spray it on my husband to check it out! 🙂 I’ll be much more forgiving of Curious cos the bottle is so cute.

  • I love the way you describe the smell of Curious, seems like I can even smell it too! Great article.

Portia Portia Portia….. I can’t believe the lemmings you can start up. I of course wouldn’t have gone near a celebuscent when it was released because, well snobby snobberson over here. I should know better because one of my all time favs is Boyfriend. Makes me want to smell Curious now if I ever see it. It’s not like I’m rich and dying to spend crazy amounts of money behind the snobbiness. I think it’s more that in the bazillions of perfumes out there to try, it’s just easier to write off whole groups as ‘cheap and won’t smell good’ so I can narrow things down a little.

    • Bee says:

I love Boyfriend! It’s the perfect comfort scent.

    • Portia says:

      HA! Sorry SV.
The incredible plethora of fragrance out there is utterly overwhelming, I hear you. It’s one of the reasons we find reviewers who are simpatico and many of the others fall by the wayside. There are only about 10 reviewers I read with any great regularity now. Mainly because they smell perfume quite similarly to the way I do, not always but mostly.
As we have been blog correspondents for quite a while now I think maybe we have quite similar frag love directions. So maybe Curious will work for you as something completely different and UBER cheap that you can spritz and forget.
Try it next time you’re at the mall.

Hi Portia! I used to wear a Britney fragrance. Can’t remove which one. I was surprised at how nice all of them are. I read Elizabeth Arden made them. Heat Rush by Beyoncé is impressive too. I got a bottle of that for my Birthday one year. Hope you and yours are well!

    • Portia says:

      Hi Liz,
Yeah, Britney must have had some excellent advisors. Her fragrances are 100% better than they ever needed to be.
I have a secret confession. There are even a couple of Paris Hilton’s that aren’t terrible. Who knew eh?

that’s always so shocking, innit? Like when I fell in love with that stupid Victoria’s Secret ‘Love’ thingy that I smelled on the gal @ Fedex. Missy March sent me a bottle – and guess what? I STILL LOVE IT!
