Smells like Democracy

Well, today is election day here in California and it wouldn’t be an election without drama. The gubernatorial race you likely have heard of already. It’s a weird all-in primary where the top two vote getters will be on the November ballot, whatever party they belong to. On the local front we have the LA Mayor’s race. We will just let that one lie. We also have a state senate race that’s become a hotbed of “you hate me because I’m gay!” to “no, we hate you because you’re awful.”

So what to wear?

I settled upon Jeffrey Dame Mimosa.

I find mimosa to be a very comforting scent. Even the look of it gives me the warm fuzzies. But it needs to be handled of it can get too claggy-sweet. The crisp violet and basil keep it cool while the musk used just skates the razors edge of skank.

Which is a place I like to be.

Are you voting? We get early voting by mail, which I think is grand. Ballot arrives in the mail and you drop it in a secure bin at any City Hall or Library, Easy Peasy.

My sample of Mimosa was purchased from the perfumer.

Our slightly-better Democrat has won the primary (the lesser of two … not exactly evils, more mediocrities) so we’re all set there. This is the kind of local politics where you’re voting for dogcatcher and sheriff. I’m wearing Dame Juste Filthy to my workout this morning, since I won’t be within 10 feet of anyone else.

    • Tom says:

It looks like the person I really did not like will be headed back to whence he came, so that’s something. (No, not Pratt. I can’t vote in LA)

  • Musette says:

No voting here in the Hinterlands
    ( IL) – but I do have AdO’s Mimosa ( I think) … hang on…

…ooop! Theirs is MAGNOLIA! ( sorry)

But it’s an ‘M’ scent, and kinda creamy-comfortable… so I’ll wear it in honor of you not chopping people up today.

Oh, wait. That’s me with the chopping.

  • Dina C. says:

    Tom,
Best wishes on the election results — I hope all your favorites win! I don’t seem to have any mimosa-centric scents (say that 5 times fast!), but I do have several florals that contain it. Today I’ll wear MDCI Un Coeur en Mai in solidarity. Have a great day!

    • Tom says:

This time wasn’t about my favorites so much as about hoping certain people don’t move forward.

I’m confused about the governor race.

I cannot recall what I’ve worn on election days perfume wise. There used to be (and probably still is) a mimosa tree on Union Street near Bond Street round the corner from where I used to live in Brooklyn. Beautiful tree in the midst of industrial. I think that whole area has now been gentrified.

    • Tom says:

The governor’s race is confusing. It used to be that you had a “closed” primary race where the top vote getters in the Democrat and the Republican race went head to head. Now it’s the top two vote getters regardless of parties. So you get situations where there are 300 candidates for Governor and splitting the vote.

  • Shiva says:

Voted yesterday in California! That was a crazy ballot, and this has been the most contentious race I’ve seen in our state, the most money ever spent by a candidate, dividing friends, turning against one another for a candidate, scheming and plotting to lock out one party. It’s been intense.

    • Tom says:

It’s been nuts. Especially the race between Young Kim and Ken Calvert in Orange County. They’ve spent a fortune swiping at each other.

  • Portia says:

    Heya Tom,
This sounds wonderful. Mimosa is a fave note and I love Jeffrey Dame’s work,
    Portia xx

    • Musette says:

      Portia,

I, too, love Jeffrey Dame’s work – and I’m always surprised by that ! Not because of him ( he’s very talented) but because the line always floats below my radar so when I do come upon it ( and am delighted) it’s always a surprise

    • Tom says:

I love his stuff too. I don’t remember meeting him at all. Must have been the champagne breakfast..

      • Musette says:

I think it was at … Luckyscent(?)

        • Tom says:

Lets hope it’s that the coffee hadn’t kicked in yet, and not the deleterious effects of too much champagne at breakfast. Or I was still in a coma from that Roscoe’s meal the night before.

  • Maya says:

    No voting for me today.
Thanks for the reminder of mimosa. I was thinking that I don’t have any, but I do, Caron Montaigne. I had completely forgotten about it and went looking for it. Took a while but I found it and sprayed some on. This one doesn’t have sweetness. It leans more to a bit of sharpness, but seems to have mellowed. I did leave it out.

    • Musette says:

I remember liking Montaigne a lot, when I first tried it!
… then my skittery self went on to Others.

    • Tom says:

I haven’t tried a Caron since they reformulated stuff. They ruined Farnesiana (speaking of Mimosa..)

      • Maya says:

The Montaigne I have is vintage, well before reformulation. I wore it a lot (used up about half 50ml bottle edt) then put it away and eventually forgot about it. I had heard that Farnesiana was once wonderful.

        • Tom says:

You’re lucky. The reformulations were just sad. IDK if they’ve gotten better- the first reformulation of AG Hadrien was a disaster.
