Iris Malikhan by Maison Crivelli

Hi there Posse Peeps, Maison Crivelli is one of the newer houses that has caught my eye. Almost every time I smell a new fragrance from this crew I go WOW! Not all of them have worked for me but the win rate is good. From being introduced to the brand at a Libertine Parfumerie event when they first came to Australia I was overwhelmed by liking so much of what they do. My favourite on the day was Fleur Diamantine and I purchased a bottle not long after.  Recently I saw a couple of their 30ml bottles on a FB Sale Doc and snapped them up. Today I thought we could talk about Iris Malikhan from 2020.

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Orris, Vanilla, Leather, Galbanum, Mastic or Lentisque, Amber, Cinnamon, Cypress, Mimosa, Coriander, Blackcurrant Syrup, Pink Pepper

Iris Malikhan is no huge ground breaking new look at iris. It opens up all cardboard, carrot and cool earth with woods in the background. It smells like happy solitude.

Not long after resins and amber make themselves known underneath, slowly swelling in prominence. A duet of warm and cool. The solitude has given way to a very luxurious hotel lobby, old style in limed woods and marble. Perfumes, humanity, a hint of cleaning product, coffee and leather bags. The iris has now become a not quite background note.

Now, after about an hour we get to the base. It’s warm and cozy. Nothing stands out as a feature note but the heavy wash is my favourite part of Iris Malikhan. Everything has come together and made a magnificent, yet understated whole. It has iris, amber, leather, spice and some wood but everything is so perfectly balanced. It’s a rush to calm and speaks to me of this people so powerful that they rarely need to speak very loudly to be heard.

Yes, I know that iris comes from the root and not the flower but the colour in this pic is so captivating I wanted to put it up anyway. Also, though iris doesn’t have a fragrance as such it looks like it should smell like Iris Malikhan.

Totally unisex with above moderate longevity and quiet projection after the first half hour. Iris Malikhan is a fragrance you wear for your own enjoyment. Also good for those you let get close or someone sitting nearby for a while.

Are you an iris lover? Tried Iris Malikhan yet?

To for that More Siren Excellent.

  • AnnieA says:

I was recently given two samples of it from a perfume pal who knows where to pass along iris samples. Am happy to have the whole 3 ml, as I’ve just checked the prices and alas, a bottle won’t be coming my way.

It’s a different version of iris: I am getting…smoky nougat as a top note. My favourite of the several Crivalli samples I’d quickly sniff.

    • Portia says:

OOOH! AnnieA, I just sniffed the nozzle and completely get smoky nougat now you’ve said it. Good pick.
      Yeah, they are pricey.
I have two To Buy Lists now. One I’ll buy retail and the other I wait for FB Sale Docs. The price of perfume has skyrocketed.

My eyes brightened when I saw galbanum on the list of notes. (I do love my greens, especially Dior Jules, No 19 EDT and Jacomo Silences.) In your experience, how prominent is my favorite resin in Iris Malikhan?

    • Portia says:

      Hey Virago,
Galbanum is one of my favourites too. Iris Malikhan has it and you can tell it’s there but it isn’t the star, or even a main player.

I looove iris but haven’t had the chance to smell this one yet. Hopefully this year!

  • Musette says:

Orris (the root) is vastly different from fragrant irises – I have a butter-yellow bearded iris in my garden that smells like almost-burnt sugar… heavenly. A bit much, though – I can only bring in one stalk before it starts to overwhelm.

But the carrotty root is The JAYUM! for iris, imo. I didn’t used to think so, until Patty intro’d me to Xerjoff’s Irisss (I think that’s all the sss there ). From then on, I was hooked! I’ve got ALL the rooties. Alladem (or near as dammit, anyway).

Wanna know how evocative your posts are, P? Well, right before you got to the hotel lobby description I’d already conjured that in my head, just from your earlier paragraph. It is always such a pleasure to read your posts!

      YAY Musette,
      Iris is my jam too.
One day I’m coming to your garden to sniff flowers.
Thanks. Day made. Writing for the Posse makes me so happy.

I love iris as a flower. The only iris fragrance I have loved is Orris, the LE by Andy Tauer. This sounds nice but certainly not, as you say, earth-shaking. There are loads of irises blooming here. It’s a wonderful sight.

    • Portia says:

      Hey Cinnamon,
I never smelled Orris by Tauer. BUM
Wish I could share the irises with you. One of my favourite flowrers.

Yes, I have a bottle of Iris Malikhan and enjoy wearing it. I also have a bottle of Maison Crivelli Hibiscus Mahaja’d.

    • Portia says:

      YAY! SNAP Filomena!
I smelled the Hibiscus at the Aussie launch but my nose was already blown from other things. I need to go back and give it a real go.
