June New Idea 2023

Woo Hoo! Let’s see how my month went for June New Idea 2023. Gosh, I’m powering g through these samples and decants. It’s starting to really look like it’s making a difference. Extra space is a very good thing. It is getting harder to ignore my full bottles and I’ve been yearning for them a bit. Next month I’m going to try to get as many done as possible in the first two days, wear some larger decants to get them going and leave myself one day a week for the FB Wardrobe. Fingers crossed eh?

June New Idea 2023 samples

June New Idea 2023

A little recap for those who have forgotten.

This year I’m aiming to thunk five samples/decants a week. More if possible, there is a tonne of them here to be dealt with. Every thunk is called a WIN, because let’s face it who doesn’t need a few extra wins? These are easy wins but hopefully will give us all a sense of accomplishment that will carry over into daily life.

How It Works

  1. No matter what size the sample or decant it only counts as ONE win.
  2. To count as a win the decant MUST be thunked. So giving them away is not a thunk, even though it accomplishes the same ends. Yeah, I know but this is how I’m playing it. You can have your own rules if you like.
  3. Multiples in a day are acceptable. So, if you empty something in the morning, another after work and another before bed that counts as THREE wins.
  4. Manufacturer Travel Size is not a sample or decant.
  5. At the end of each successfully completed month I am allowed to reward myself with a splurge from ONE perfume store. Yeah that’s right. Sure you can buy 20 things if it makes you happy but it has to be ONE etailer or retailer in ONE TRANSACTION.

I’m going to celebrate by giving away a US$50 Gift Voucher to Surrender To Chance for every successful month to one lucky random commenter. Cool eh?

So let’s see how June New Idea 2023 went…..

FiF: First in Fragrance, LiP: Libertine Parfumerie, LS: LuckyScent, MPS: My Perfume Samples, MS: Manufacturers Sample, P1: Perfume 1, PG: Perfumista Gift, PP: Posh Peasant, RK: Ruth K, SG: Split Group, STC: Surrender To Chance, TPC: The Perfumed Court

  1. Day: DSH Perfumes: Cuir et Champignon: MS: Earthy open, like digging in wet dirt. Quickly turns into a boozy leather amber. Cloves head the top of the heart, riding over the other notes for quite a way in and then back to boozy leather amber.  SO GOOD! Love
Bed: Keiko Mecheri Genie des Bois: STC 2ml: Violet and sweetened woods. I remember adoring this when I first tried it. Onto the TO BUY LIST.
  2. Morning: DIOR Diorissimo: TPC 2ml: Turned. GAH! Took about 20 seconds to show its nastiness. Fair enough, must be over a decade old, only dregs left. WASHED OFF: Posse post
Day: BDK Parfums Bouquet de Hongrie: STC 3ml: I had a travel, bought after first sniffing this sample, it is a very pretty scent but the more I wore it the more it reminded me of shampoo. Like Posse post
  3. Morning: Olympic Orchids Woodcut: MS: Dark, gorgeous oily woods. Heaven. Thing is I want to buy this but am worried other woods would get the spritz. LOVE
Evening: LezNez Turtle Vetiver Front: STC 5ml: I remember missing being able to buy this bottle after a 1ml sample. Spent a bomb buying this 5ml decant. WORTH IT! Love
  4. Nope
  5. Nope
  6. Nope
  7. Nope
  8. Evening: Adam Levine woman: STC 5ml: This is such a good creamy sandalwood with a few bells and whistles. FragranceNet still had 50ml for US$10-ish. Such a bargain. Like+++ Posse post
  9. Day: Keiko Mecheri Loukhoum: STC 3ml: SO SWEET! Hair raisingly sweet. I had a bottle of this early on and though it’s beautiful it is nothing that I’d like to smell like. Nope
Bed: Aedes de Venustas EdP: STC 2ml: Only the smallest amount left, very thick and oily. FINALLY I smell the Rhubarb! It was hiding there in plain sight for me but until now it had always smelt more apple-ish. Like
  10. Day: Guerlain Les Voyages Olfactifs 05 Paris-Shanghai: RK 10ml: I have been seeking this out over the years because it was DCd before I could get my mitts on a bottle. Wearing this over the last week or so it has been a superstar, everyone wants to know what it is. Lightly sweet and spicy nutty woods and vanilla. Not a big perfume but it is diffusive and catches attention. So sad it’s gone. L O V E
  11. Day: CB I Hate Perfume Narcissus: STC 3ml: Even though some of the oils smell on their way to rancid as it sprayed on, 10 minutes later it was divine. Naughty, sparkling, brilliant smell of spring. June New Idea is throwing up some beauties. Love Posse post
  12. Nope
  13. Nope
  14. Nope
  15. Morning: Memo Siwa: MS: Sparkling boozy vanilla and florals with a salty backbeat. Really good but unless you use quite a lot it is not a big fragrance. I’d used 1/3 of the sample last wear and was underwhelmed. Used the rest today and it is lovely, good longevity and village. Like++
Finished my small Byredo Bibliotheque candle! YAY
  16. Morning: Phaedon Pluie de Soleil: STC 3ml: Dregs in the decant. Turned very badly. What was already a hard core fruity sweet thing is nauseous, Washed off.
Morning: DSH Perfumes Kaleidoscope: MS: A perfect, sharp citrus to cover the awful remnants of PdS. Very interesting sparkling citrus floral with some twiggy woods down the back. So much better. Like++
Bed: Guerlain Les Voyages Olfactifs 01 Paris-Moscow: STC 5ml: The most beautiful of the series. I bought a few 5ml on sale at STC, then bought a 1/2 full bottle. It’s sweeter than I like my fragrance but so beautifully conceived and executed that I swoon. lightly sizzling, sparkling fruits and citrus over a tonka heavy vanilla. I think the pink pepper overload might be what makes Moscow so freaking amazing. A sophisticated, refined Burberry Brit. L O V E
  17. Day: Andrea Mack Silk: STC 2ml: Happily weird. Hay with some interesting floral waxiness and a very real dirt accord all over cold, wet, tea leaves. Why is this called silk? Like
  18. Nope. Finished my Tabu deodorant roll on though.
  19. Nope
  20. Nope
  21. Nope
  22. Day: Penhaligon’s Constantinople: LiP 2ml: This is such a big, bold perfume that 2ml has taken me ages to wear. Vanilla heavily dosed with amber and woods and a slew of other bit player notes, probably over the top of a simple base. It is beautiful, people around love it and so do I. L O V E
  23. Day: L’Artisan Parfumeur Au Bord de L’eau: STC 2ml: This name makes me laugh because I say it “OWH Bordello”. Yes. I’m 12. I think I’m missing something here. It’s a wispy waft of slightly green citrus. Like
Bed: Parfums de Rosine Une Folie de Rose: SG 10ml: Gorgeous, slightly fizzy rose. Mossy woods base. A perfect, rosy chypre. Love
  24. Morning: Hand written Oud Sa Pluiz?!?: SG 10ml: A soft focus fruity oud opening of the barnyard or circus variety with sawdust and hay, sandalwood finish. It’s bloody good but can’t find it anywhere. LOVE
Bed: Lancome Tubereuses Castana: SG 10ml: Weirdly addictive sweetness. Gooey and thick. Strange. Can’t decide if I love it or hate it. Ambivalent
  25. Nope
  26. Nope
  27. Nope
  28. Nope
  29. Morning: Guerlain Eau de Cologne Imperiale: MPS 5ml: This has been such an enjoyable wear that you’ll be reading a post about it soon. Love
Evening: Bottega Profumiera Rose Poudre: MS: A slightly jammy rose with plenty of greenery and moss to keep it unisex. Some vanilla rich amber adds warmth. This smells expensive and haughty. Like+
Bed: L’Artisan Sur l’Herbe: SP 10ml: There was only about 5ml left and it was getting thick. The citrus opening is gorgeous and fades to a citrus sweet, pithy white floral and in about an hour I stop smelling it at all but it’s still there because I get compliments. At work even from a couple of perfumista friends. Like
  30. Morning: Heeley Note de Yuzu: MS: Curiously stemmy citrus. Happily bittersweet. Loads of pith and salt water. A very lovely take ops Yuzu. Like++
Evening: Essential Parfums Divine Vanille: MS: Vanilla with some bells and whistles. Nice for going out with the crew. Like

June New Idea 2023

Well, SUCCESS! 26 samples/decants thunked. WOO HOO

So please leave a comment with something you thunked in June for June New Idea 2023. I’ll pick a winner randomly. Then announce in the next New Idea 2023 post,
Portia xx

  • Brigitte says:

I’ve thunked a few samples this month but have forgotten the names which means they didn’t leave an impression

  • Sylvia says:

I thunked 3 this month. I’m an undersprayer and samples last quite a while. Really pleased to finally finish some. My favourite was Estée Lauder Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia. I’m not really a white flower lover, but this is simply beautiful; bright, lush and full-bodied.

  • finanna says:

Oh wow, 26 and a candle…I finished only two minis (4711 Blood Orange & Basil and Starfruit & White Flowers) and 13 samples.

My favourites were Akro Bake (upgraded to a bottle in May), Technique Indiscrète Sapin (no longer available) and Perris Monte Carlo Ylang Ylang Nosy Be (shopping list).

I treated myself with a travel duo from Peosym and sample sets from Maison de Tahite so that I’ll have some more minis&samples to finish:D

  • Maya says:

    Francesca may be right.
I think it’s great that you’re keeping this going and am enjoying these monthly posts. I never have many samples around, though I buy a lot. I use them up or pass them along. The large decants I buy I get instead of bottles, so they get used up too.

  • Francisca says:

Looking at the handwriting, I think it’s not Oud sa Pluiz but Oud Saphir. Checked if that exists, and it does: it’s from Atelier Cologne.
First comment ever, sorry for my English. Thunked shalimar edp, there’s that?

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

This month I have been attacking a stash of indie samples saved for a round robin. As it turns out, almost all of the ‘natural’ scents are no longer good either in oil or solid format so those got thunked, nearly 40 in total. So disappointing. The rest are bagged up for the project. I did also enjoy working through a Milano Fragranze discovery set, and found new loves in Basilica and Naviglio.

    • Portia says:

BUMMER VerbenaLuvvr about the lost ones. I’m surprised how few of mine have gone south. Sure there will be a bunch that I haven’t spritzed yet.
Woo Hoo on your thunk work. Very nice.
      Portia xx

  • Musette says:

I find it hysterical that you (and I – and probably a LOT of Posse) have SO MANY SAMPLES/decants that we have to actively decide to ‘thunk’ . It’s delightfully bizarre. I’ve been doing it, too, but lack the discipline to actually write down what they are.
One I’ve done (and only in the diffuser) is a vintage Floris Jasmine. O.M.G. 2 drops in my medium diffuser stanks the whole house up, sumpin’ glorious!!! I couldn’t wear this on a bet, it’s that indolic, but diffused, it’s a gorgeous jasmine.

    • Portia says:

We are part of a perfumed hoarding culture Musette. Keeping things for reference and just in case.
      That jasmine sounds freaking AMAZING!
      Portia xx

  • Dina C. says:

Well done, Portia! You’re so good at describing scents in just a few words. I used up an 8 oz bottle of Korres basil & lemon bath gel. Great scent for summer. Otherwise, I’ve been sticking to my summer favorites. Working on a sample of Vilhelm Parfumerie Basilico & Fellini, which is a basil & fig scent. Another one good for summer.

    • Portia says:

      Thanks DinaC,
I love those Korres shower gels! Did you ever try their Japanese Rose? Gorgeous.
      Portia xx

      • Dina C. says:

Yes! Japanese Rose was glorious! I’m loving Iris Neroli and Hyacinth right now. Such good stuff for us bath lovers!

  • KayKay says:

Well done, there are a few in your list that sound delicious. For me, June was mostly full bottle spritzing, Ive been trying to finish off a few bottles that have been hanging around for a few years with only a half inch or so left. But, I did thunk a Goutal Eau D’Hadrien 3ml sample (need a full bottle of this asap), a FM Iris Poudre 3ml (LOVE LOVE LOVE), as well as FM’s Eau de Magnolia (love this light and breezy citrus floral, it’s perfect for the hot days, very refreshing).

    • Portia says:

      Hi KayKay,
Three gorgeous fragrances thunked. I particularly love the way Malle treated Magnolia.
      Portia x

  • March says:

What a fun post, as usual! I remember loving that earthy DSH. And that Adam Levine is a shocker, forgot about that one! Yeah, I had kind of the same feeling about the Lancome? Ooooh, looking forward to your thoughts on the Guerlain!

    • Musette says:

I thought of you, March, when I read the Lancome – you swooned over that whole line, iirc!
That DSH is one of my absolute favorites of hers – and that’s saying something. She is an artist – and it shows in nearly all of her perfumes.

      • Portia says:

Oh yes Musette, Dawn is bloody amazing. She is a perfumer I’d love to spend a week just being around. So lovely, talented and gorgeous.
        Portia x

    • Portia says:

      Hey March,
We didn’t get most of that Lancome set here in Oz. Was it like a stab at prive?
      Portia xx

  • AnnnieA says:

Whee I won! Thank you and will email soon. Emptied five this month the favourite being Arquiste Architect Club despite the hot weather. Penhaligon Favourite was pretty but unexcitingly rosy. Bond Greenwich Village makes me want to find a different amber floral, Moth and Rabbit Love Exposure a blank to me, and ELO Ghost in the Shell had a nice jasmine marred by something industrial.

    • Portia says:

      YAY AnnieA,
I got your email and will send off your voucher. Look for it in your spam just in case.
OOOH! Now you have me seriously intrigued about Ghost in a Shell. I have a vague recollection of trying it but….
      Portia x

  • rosarita says:

I thunked a sample of Musc Ravageur (love) and Portrait of a Lady (love), gifts from a long time online perfume friend. It is so difficult for me to thunk anything, I’m always afraid of losing a scent.

  • Tara C says:

Didn’t thunk anything yet, but I’m on a mission to drain a bottle of Tauer Lys du Désert by the end of the summer. 75 mls to go, I am dousing myself copiously. It seems like it is approaching the point where it might go off and I don’t want to waste it. Gorgeous floral incense.

    • Portia says:

Woo Hoo! I’m sad about it going a bit off but excited that you’re marinating in something you love TaraC
      Portia xx

  • cinnamon says:

Thunked nothing. Really intrigued by Cuir et Champignon and I remember when that Keiko Mecheri was all the thing. Reminds me I haven’t had Turkish delight in ages.

    • Portia says:

      Cinnamon!
We were in Little India tonight and wandered past some home made Turkish Delight in one of the shops. I was a good diabetic and resisted.
      Portia xx

  • alityke says:

    Darling Portia
    I am in awe!
    I haven’t thunked a thing.
Ooops not quite true I thunked a tube of Madge’s T&D bath/shower gel. Still got one or two stashed away. Just need to remember where!

    • Portia says:

      You and me both Alityke.
Tom will tell you we also ran around LA looking for T&D Naked and by that time they ONLY had sets so I bought a few of those too.
      Portia xx

      • alityke says:

I sniped a 3/4 bottle of T&D Naked on UK eBay for pennies a few years ago. It gets better with age. Unlike poor owd Madge

        • Portia says:

OH NOOO! Madonna can do no wrong for me. She was a major supporter of LGBTQI+, has always lit her own way, made it in a business not kind to women and is living disgracefully right up to now. Would I have made the same choices? Probably not, but if this is what she sees as a life well lived and is still having a laugh then what else is there?

          Sorry, such a rant.

Yes, T&D Naked is really good stuff. just getting better and better.
          Portia xx

          • alityke says:

I meant she’s been in ICU with bacterial pneumonia.
I always remember her throwing herself at Stat from B-Movie (my ex) before she got famous when Jellybean was discussing producing them.
I wonder if she’s made up with her brother yet?

          • Portia says:

Oh yeah, she’s not been well. Sorry. I’m so used to defending her against my mates who have all turned their backs on her. It makes me sad how short their memories are.

            OMG! You have a story!
One day I’d love to hear the whole thing.
            Portia xx

          • Maya says:

Her brother has died, but it seems she was paying for everything for him all along and until the end.

  • Tom says:

Didn’t think anything, but I don’t keep decants (much). Good for you continuing- I’d like to see updated photos.

Imperiale is one that I don’t have at the moment but did and loved it. One of those “keep in the icebox for hot days” kind of scents. You can apply by pouring on your scalp and stopping when your shoes are wet and you still won’t gas out your neighbors..
