Fleurs de Glace by Olympic Orchids

Hey Posse. I found a 5ml Fleurs de Glace tester bought when the worldwide postal service wasn’t quite so uptight. I must have bought a few testers in a sale at some point. There was a little hoard of them in another box. Maybe 6 or 8? Olympic Orchids was one of the first Indie brands I really fell for when the perfume craving properly took hold. Ellen Covey was always so friendly and makes killer fragrances. They blew my mind, still do. Applying some and remembering how absolutely mesmerised I was on first sniff was so fun. It still smells freaking amazing. Noticing that there is only about 2ml left in my travel size I went looking for more but sadly it has been discontinued. Probably years ago. So I thought I’d come here and talk about it with you all.

In 2018 Ellen Covey did a Posse interview.

Fleurs de Glace by Olympic Orchids

Featured notes include:
Galbanum, Black Pepper, Cyclamen, Ozonic Accord, Transparent Vanilla, White Musk

Fleurs de Glace is gorgeously strange. Created by Ellen to be a fragrant expression of the way ice flowers or frost flowers look. I’ve never seen them but looked them up online. Wikipedia has a page with a pic but I couldn’t find any free ones to add here.

None of the notes make a distinctive showing for me. Fleurs de Glace is so beautifully blended. It smells like looking at these frost flowers but there is an underlying warmth that makes me think the viewer is rugged up nice and warm. So imagine your face is chilly but the rest comfy.

Also, Fleurs de Glace was one of Ellen’s earliest mainly synthetic perfumes. It does smell kind of space age. I love that cold metallic zing of frosty mornings. Jin and I regularly wander the streets of European cities at night in winter when we suffer jet lag sleeplessness. This perfume smells like that feeling.

Did you ever have a chance to try it?

How about trying some Hayati New York perfumes? The new emerging perfume brand?

  • Tom says:

Sorry so late- WordPress was hating on my iPad and i didn’t have time to comment from the office PC.

I don’t remember these at all- I know I knew the name but for the life of me don’t remember that they were at the LA sniffa. But that was a long and intensive sniffing day!

I do remember going to Roscoe’s the night before. Yum!

Great perfumes, so happy you discovered OO! My top choices are Golden Cattleya ,Gujarat, and Tropic of Capricorn.

  • March says:

Oh this sounds amazing! I’ve totally forgotten them from LA (unlike Musette lol). I know exactly what you mean by that late night frozen smell. Sounds delightful.

  • Musette says:

Portia – Olympic Orchids was part of our LA Scentsation and it’s where I first got to know about her line. I agree with you on the overall beauty of those perfumes!

Never heard of this — or the brand. Certainly your description of the fragrance is interesting. However, cold things don’t generally work well on me — just sort of sit without developing. This post reminded me of spider webs on a freezing morning though, when they get outlined by the frost. Beautiful.

Whatever it is that gives that metallic cold gives me the heebeegeebees.
Another “frozen” fragrance is 4160Tuesdays Doe in the Snow. Sort of frozen peachy Mitzi. Theoretically I should adore it. In reality nope, makes my hair stands on end

    • Portia says:

Ah! Alityke. I can see how that might happen. Fortunately it’s a scent feeling I adore.

It’s obviously something in my lizard brain that the aromachemical triggers.
Maybe it was surviving the winter of 63 as a baby in an unheated house.
I hate cold, really hate it. Makes me sob
        I should move to Australia!

        • Portia says:

You’d be LOVING Australia right now. It’s sizzling hot

          • alityke says:

Not fond of anything over 27c either. Lord I’m like the Princess & the freakin’ Pea where the weather is concerned.
Today we have a “danger to life” weather warning! 90mph gales & sideways sheets of rain! I don’t like storms either hehehe

          • Portia says:

WOW! You do have a very set scope Alityke.
I’m ok from -20 to +42C as long as I have the required clothing. LOVE storms and rain and don’t even mind getting drenched as long as dryness is available in the near future.
Extremes aren’t my favourite and my true preference are the shoulder seasons.

          • alityke says:

He he I adore thunderstorms after British 3 day humid summers. Nothing better than running outside into that cleansing rain!
            Its muzzle I loathe

          • Portia says:

OK, fair. We don’t really get that very European muzzle.

  • Briony says:

Is it similar to The Unicorn Spell? I used to love that one but that, too, was quickly discontinued.
