July New Idea 2023

Woo Hoo! Let’s see how my month went for July New Idea 2023. Well! We have flown past the halfway mark. I won’t lie to you, this month has been a hard slog. My enthusiasm has waned and I’m spending quite a bit of time beating myself up over stupid ideas. I often forget when making recurring plans how much I love not having any… HA HA HA HA HA!

July New Idea 2023

A little recap for those who have forgotten.

This year I’m aiming to thunk five samples/decants a week. More if possible, there is a tonne of them here to be dealt with. Every thunk is called a WIN, because let’s face it who doesn’t need a few extra wins? These are easy wins but hopefully will give us all a sense of accomplishment that will carry over into daily life.

How It Works

  1. No matter what size the sample or decant it only counts as ONE win.
  2. To count as a win the decant MUST be thunked. Yeah, I know but this is how I’m playing it. You can have your own rules if you like.
  3. Multiples in a day are acceptable. So, if you empty something in the morning, another after work and another before bed that counts as THREE wins.
  4. Manufacturer Travel Size is not a sample or decant.
  5. At the end of each successfully completed month I am allowed to reward myself with a splurge from ONE perfume store. Yeah that’s right. Sure you can buy 20 things if it makes you happy but it has to be ONE etailer or retailer in ONE TRANSACTION.

I’m going to celebrate by giving away a US$50 Gift Voucher to Surrender To Chance for every successful month to one lucky random commenter. Cool eh?

So let’s see how July New Idea 2023 went…..

FiF: First in Fragrance, LiP: Libertine Parfumerie, LS: LuckyScent, MPS: My Perfume Samples, MS: Manufacturers Sample, P1: Perfume 1, PG: Perfumista Gift, PP: Posh Peasant, RK: Ruth K, SG: Split Group, STC: Surrender To Chance, TPC: The Perfumed Court

  1. Day: Teo Cabanel Cafe Cabanel: MS: Last time I tried this I went ape shit for it too. Warm spicy caramel coffee that heads to milky vanilla rich amber. On the To Buy List. LOVE
  2. Morning: Keiko Mecheri Mogador: MS: So pretty. Cool morning roses and greenery, a garden in bloom. Love this so much but wouldn’t wear it. Love
Evening: Celine Saint-Germain-Des-Pres: STC 5ml: Wore it to work tonight, it was a hit. Gorgeous aldehydic floral with loads of bright herbal and citrus notes. A powdery vanilla dry down. If this was half the price I’d have a 200ml bottle. Maybe I need a bottle anyway?!? Love
  3. Nope (A few of us Aussies are wearing JHaG Midnight Oud. I’m in 10 chest sprays and doing the house cleaning. Winter drudgery never smelled so good)
  4. Day: Oriza L. Legrand Les Tourterelles de Zelmis: SG 10ml: This has taken a while to use because when over spritzed it’s an aldehyde bomb and I get headaches. Softer application is key for me. So pretty, rosy carnation floral with powdery honeyed amber dry down. Should be a win but Nope
Bed: Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Tutti Kiwi: STC 5ml: I remember trying this when it was available in our department stores and not thinking it was something I’d ever like to smell like. Well, I was wrong. It is lovely, so pretty and like a super expensive hair conditioner. Fruity, like fruit, not confectionary. Like
  5. Nope
  6. Nope. Finished a L’Artisan Caligna shower gel.
  7. Nope
  8. Morning: L’Artisan Au Bord de L’Eau: SG 10ml: Was excited to find a large decant of this after draining a 2ml last month. I could see myself owning a bottle, maybe. Love
Bed: Roja Dove Pierre de Velay Extrait No. 11: STC 5ml: Bloody hell. I’ve been known to knock Roja for his head up ass pretentiousness but this perfume smells AH MAY ZING! A woody white floral that is very masculine on me. OMG it’s nearly 500 pounds. LOVE but that’s just too much money.
  9. Morning: Eight and Bob Egypt: STC 5ml: Used up most of this when I got it. So less than a ml. Lovely traditional menswear. The woody dry down is so comfortable. Like Posse review
Evening: Ermengildo Zegna Musk Gold: STC 5ml: GAH! By the time I realised this was the gold standard musk for me it was DCd in Australia and I couldn’t find it anywhere. SO SAD! Spicy patchouli musks. Love
  10. Evening: Soivohle Orris Ochre: Mine 10ml: I decanted this out for a holiday years ago. There was still almost the whole 10ml. I sent most of it off to three people in the Aussie Blind Sniff Swap. Had about 1ml left and wore it all at once. OMG! A perfect, dry, lightly bready, violet rich orris. What a perfume. This is one of the best July New Idea fragrances I’ve worn. L O V E

  14. Nope
  15. Morning: Serge Lutens Dent de Lait: STC 5ml: Metallic floral with milky sap. So pretty. We had a sunny winter day today and it felt like spring. So tenacious, I could still smell it when I had a midnight bath. LOVE
Bed: Tom Ford Noir Anthracite: STC 5ml: Smells very old fashioned menswear with a metallic twist. Like
  16. Nope
  17. Morning: J.F. Schwarzlose Berlin Altruist: STC 5ml: Citrus and peppery rose with a weird assed metallic banknote that takes it well out of the cologne genre into something much more interesting. Like
Evening: Tauer Perfumes Cologne du Maghreb: STC 5ml: Only oily dregs left in my decant. Just a whisper of herbal amber with a slight hint of pithy citrus. Gone in under an hour. Bummer
Bed: Montale Vetiver Des Sables: STC 1ml: Threw it all on at once. Metallic, salty, twiggy and green. As it warms up on my body there is a pretty white floral breathiness underneath. Gorgeous. Like

  23. Morning: Jessica Simpson I Fancy You: MPS 5ml: Fruity aquatic with a white and green bouquet. Very pretty. Like
Evening: Mancera Aoud Violet: STC 5ml: This has been an interesting ride. Wearing Aoud Violet around the house, shopping, walking the dog or working is excellent. It’s a metallic, medicinal oudh that dries down to a soft twiggy amber. Wore it one night to the opera and it smelled like a chemical plant meltdown, was totally distracting. Like/hate
  24. Day: Divine EdP: Unknown: This is the old stuff, smells so freaking good. My bottle is a little more modern. L O V E
Bed: IUNX Splash Forte: STC 5ml: I bought a few of these when IUNX shut shop so you’ll be seeing them pop up. WISH I’d bought a couple of bottles now. Spicy, sweaty bay and woods. Freaking amazing. L O V E
  25. Day: Cale Fragranze d’Autore Fulgor: PG: Fugor is so interesting. The open is squealing woods and combative narcissus. So over the top but never uncomfortable. The heart is like jonquils flowering on a rocky slope in the forest just as it starts to rain. Slowly it warms through to a warm, smoky and comforting amber/patchouli with an overlay of feral narcissus. 15 hours later I can still smell amber woods softly. LOVE
  26. Nope
  27. Nope
  28. Nope
  29. Morning: Volnay Etoile d’Or: SG 5ml: Spicy powder over amber. Reminds me of some of the OIriza Legrand line. Dry down is baby powder. LOVE
Day: Pierre Guillaume Tonka Bodykon 31: STC 1ml: Chewy caramel amber with a few bells and whistles. Beautifully done. Like
  30. Day: Parfum d’Empire Tabac Tabou: STC 2ml: Tobacco with animal fur, so growly and gorgeous. The narcissus and honey create the most fabulous floral animal. I remember not being particularly taken with this originally. L O V E
Evening: DIOR Rouge Trafalgar: MS: Layering this over the remnants of Tabac Tabou made it infinitely more interesting and smell more early niche. Regularly I find it a bit like a Tocca or L’Occitane. That squeaky heart also has a Turkish Delight feel for me. Like but not very much
Bed: Bambi’s Belly: Unknown: Strangely alluring hairy greenness topped with BarBQ sauce. QUEER! Like
  31. Nope

July New Idea 2023

YAY! 25 THUNKS in July! So please leave a comment with something you thunked in July for July New Idea 2023. I’ll pick a winner randomly. Then announce in the next New Idea 2023 post,

Did I splurge? Yes, I bought Etro Messe de Mineut and Perfume d’Empire Musc Tonkin, both from FragranceNet. So that’s two off my To Buy List.

  • Sylvia says:

Your doing great Portia! I wore mostly samples in June, but only thunked a few. My favourite discoveries were the Vero Kern samples. I did not thunk them though, they are so strong and will last me a while. Mito and Onda are now on my wishlist. I did thunk my sample of vintage Paloma Picasso. Loved it. And I gave away 15 samples. Yay, that’s the biggest dent in my samples I’ve made in a long time.

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

I am still on a bender to finish off decants and travel sprays and am making a small dent. I managed to thunk Jo Malone Wild Strawberry & Parsley, Tiffany Rose Gold, L’Aromatica Yellow Rose (this is a MUST full bottle purchase for me), Tommy Bahama St. Kitts, Tom Ford Bitter Peach, and Hilde Soliani Bacio. Also I tossed 7 assorted Bath & Body Works sprays that had turned or lost their scent.

    • Portia says:

      YAY for you VerbenaLuvvr,
      Some very nice thunking there.
Tell me about St. Kitts please. I love some of those salty floral Tommy Bahama frags.

  • Anniea says:

Ten this month! Haven’t beaten this record except maybe in last year’s sample decluttering. So: L’Ombre dans l’Eau was nice, but I seem to like the solid better.Vio-Volta – still looking for a violet to love and purchase. Heeley Menthe Fraiche – nice, but already have Covey for minty needs. J’Adore, a blast from the past. CSP’s Vanille Coco, a bottled vacation. “Amethyst” – nice enough, but now forgotten. Arizona – boy, does Olympic Orchids not work for me overall. Killian’s Angel Share – nice while it lasted. Cartier La Panthere – fun bu not me, and liked saying “PawnTAIR!” dramatically. Majaina Sin – fun but not me.

    • AnnieA says:

P.S. Does anyone thing of Sex Panther when they see the Cartier?

    • Portia says:

      WOW AnnieA,
That’s really broad spectrum of thunks.
Violet is a funny one, eh? Have you tried Violet Ida by Miller Harris? I really loved that.
Majaina Sin, bummer. That’s one I really liked, er like, I have a travel of it.

  • Kathleen says:

I so enjoy reading what you wore and thunked, and your reviews. Such fun! A few standouts that I sampled were Tauer Golasten, Oriza Lagrand Heliotrope, and Divine. The two perfumes that you purchased, Etro Messe de Mineut and Perfume d’Empire Musc Tonkin are loves of mine, FB worthy for sure. They are on my to buy list. I can’t believe Fragrancenet has them, I need to take a look now!

    • Portia says:

      Hey Kathleen,
YAY! I love Divine and Heliotrope.
Yeah, some of things available on FragNet are very surprising. Hope you found some exciting stuff there too.
      Portia xx

  • KayKay says:

Well done Portia, I had good luck this month too. I don’t have near the volume of samples you have (guessing by the photo of the boxes of samples on the post) but in my current collection of 50 or so samples, I got thru 10 of them in July. I finished a 1ml of SL Rose de Nuit (love what Uncle Serge does to Roses). 1ml of Chanel ?5 Eau Premiere (treated myself to a full bottle in the end of June and it’s already gotten a bit of hard use the past several weeks, it has the bones of the original No5 but a bit lighter, lovely for hot humid summer days). 2ml sample of FM Carnal Flower (my second little decant of this one, I love it but it doesn’t always love me). 1ml of Goutal’s Vanille Exquise (it does live up to it’s name exquisite vanilla but doesn’t seem to last on my skin). 1ml Guerlain’s Spiriteuse Double Vanille (definitely on my ”love but I have bills to pay first” list, it is such a gorgeous smoky dark vanilla that chugs on beautifully for over 12hrs on my skin, I need another decant in my life before winter hits). 5ml of Narcisco Rodriguez for Her EDT (also a warm weather fave, on our to buy list). Also finished off 1ml samples of Piguet’s Fracas (apply with caution but love the full blown room filling bubblegum tuberose) , MFK Baccarat 540 Extrait( phew there’s a lot to unpack here but the spicy saffron hit in the opening is gorgeous, Glossier You (meh not me, too bland, I don’t get the hype) last BDK Creme de Cuir (another on my to buy list, luxurious supple creamy white suede leather). Overall a month of fragrance wins. Now I’m feeling the pull of autumnal fragrances as we’ve hit August and the weather changed this past week to be much less humid and a touch cooler. Cheers to another good month of thunks in August.

    • Portia says:

      WOW KayKay! Nice thunking.
So many of my loves in your list. SDV, Creme de Cuir, Vanille Exquise, Carnal Flower and FRACAS!!
      What a month.
      Congrats on your win.
      Portia xx

      • Musette says:

I love CF and Fracas in hot weather, wear them heavily-duty (as in – I wear a LOT of it), with the attendant creme, powder, etc…
        It’s GLORIOUS!
That BDK sounds intriguing – maybe a bit like Uncle Serge’s Daim Blond? Must investigate

        • Portia says:

          Hey Musette,
The Creme de Cuir has a similar feeling to Daim Blond but without the fruity aspects. Creamier too. So good.
          Portia xx

  • Musette says:

    Bambi’s Belly sounds…weird. Not ‘bad’ weird… just..weird.
I lol’d at the Mancera description! You must’ve wanted to gnaw your arm off!

    • Portia says:

HA! Yeah Musette. Bambi’s Belly was a surprise in many ways. I really liked it.
Well, maybe not that bad but Aoud Violet was definitely irritating in an opera setting. I keep thinking it might have been melding with someone else nearby and the consequent Franken-Smell became ugh.
      Portia xx

  • Brigitte says:

I thunked one sample at work of Mandarin Basillic (sp?)
Have you noticed that fragrancenet is now carrying many high end niche for a fraction of the cost? Wonder what that is all about?

    • Portia says:

      Hey Brigitte,
      Yay for a thunk.
Yeah, a few of the very little brands are now selling there. Don’t know. Maybe it’s a needs must situation. Could be offloading their less popular stuff so as not to have to DC. It’s a bargain fest to be sure.
      Portia xx

  • Dina C. says:

Fabulous, fantastic post, Portia! I always look forward to the end of the month to see what you’ve thunked. Laughed out loud at your description of the Mancera Aoud Violet! I’m SO envious of your Etro Messe de Minuet. I sampled that and loved wearing it as my ghostly Halloween perfume since it smells like an abandoned stone crypt.

    • Portia says:

      Thanks DinaC!
Ha1 Yes attacked at the opera by my perfume!!
Well, they have Messe de Minuet at FragranceNet for remarkable good price. SHHH!
      Portia xx

  • Song says:

Haven’t thunked anything but might just slap all of my sample of 2 CDG on me for fun since I’ve ordered a bottle anyway… the serge lutens sounds so good!!! I have a sample of l’orpheline but I don’t feel sophisticated enough to wear it, ha.

    • Portia says:

      Hey Song,
L’orpheline is excellent as posh or casual. Get it on you and swan around doing the chores. What better way to make the mundane magical?
      Portia xx

  • Finanna says:

Don’t worry too much, you made a great dent during the first half of the year already. You’ll bounce back! There were plenty of interesting things in your list this month too (off to google Cabanel sample set?)..

I have (again) been useless with my sample stash, and finished only two (Perris Monte Carlo Vanille de Tahiti and Jasmin de Pays).

Ahh, Tutti Kiwi is pure nostalgia to me, I should get a decant. Incidentally, I just had a good sniff-around with kids at the Aqua Allegoria shelf earlier today (Pamplelune and Pera Granita were their favourites).

    • Portia says:

      Hi Finanna,
      Thanks.
2 down is very good. Did either of your thunks float the boat?
OOOH! Very nice choices from the kids. I love that Aqua allegory series. always something gorgeous there.
      Portia xx

      • finanna says:

Thanks, I really enjoyed the jasmine, but I don’t think I’ll stretch for a full bottle yet.

I was so surprised about the Pamplelune, because grapefruit is pure sulphure hell on me (didn’t mention this to the kid because his face was pure bliss).

  • alityke says:

I thunked just 2 samples. The M&S Soft Iris, it needed multiple applications through the day. I have my eye on a 100ml bottle. It will be a completely easy dumb grab.
I also thunked Fern’s Summer 23 sample. Citrus, suede tinged osmanthus & geranium ending on hay & resin. Very pretty & was fabulous in the heat of June. Not so good in the cool, constant, grey rain of July.
Northern Europe in July 23 needed ambers!

    • Portia says:

      YAY Alityke.
      Two samples is good.
What weird weather the world is having. Our winter is gorgeous, like a comfortable summer.
      Portia xx

  • cinnamon says:

Even without sampling it I ‘want’ that Teo Cabanel coffee thing. But no can do blind buys right now so off to find a sample. Sorry about the one that went off during the opera. Not fair.

    • cinnamon says:

and ooooh. Cabanel has a very good sample product. so, for 30 euros + 10 euros shipping I’ve got 14 samples coming. oh, and it includes a 30 euro voucher towards a full bottle purchase.

      • Finanna says:

Damn! I had just decided I will not buy any new samples this year and it seems that there will be some Cabanels flying to this direction (if the shipping works out).

But seriously, thanks for the tip, it is cheaper than a blind buy (unless I fall in love with several of them).?

        • cinnamon says:

Def cheaper than a blind buy, and something is love at least you get money off. Good cost/benefit analysis 🙂

      • Portia says:

This is excellent news. Can’t wait to read how you love/like/hate them.

    • Portia says:

Oh yes, Cafe Cabanel. I’m wanting it BAD!
Ha! Cinnamon, you are sweet. Aoud Violet attacked at the opera.
      Portia xx

    • cinnamon says:

arg. I got so caught up in the Tea Cabanel missed the point of the post. I thunked nothing except books. I’m getting low on my Kilian Love Don’t Be Shy, though…

  • Maya says:

Hang in there. I think you’re doing great.
Your list reminded me of Teo Cabanel (Lace Garden). It is so nice. It doesn’t last long but I’ve only tried it in warm weather. It might be worth buying anyway if the price is right. Pierre Guillaume Tonka Bodykon 31 is one of those that I tried and went “nah”, tried it again and went “mmmm”, tried it again and thought “nice”. By the end of the sample, it became “I want it”.

    • Portia says:

Maya, I just can’t buy another beautiful chewy amber. There are at least a dozen here already and I only really spritz a couple regularly. Bodykon is gorgeous but I’m not willing to fall in love with more amber.
      So SHHHHHH please. LOL
Lace Gardens is so pretty, if my memory serves. I think there’s half a decant of it around here somewhere too.
