There are several ways to define the word ‘beguiling’ (charm/amuse/cheat) – but I always think of the term ‘jolie-laide’ when I think of ‘beguiling’ – that sense of never quiiite being able to pin down what it is that interests/captivates/delights you…
I know a man. At first glance he is nothing special to look at. He’s not ugly…but he’s not beautiful. He’s …average, tending towards…. ‘eh. okay’ Nostrils you could drive a semi through. No chin to speak of. In need of a good exfoliator. so… eh. Except. Juuust when you have consigned him to the ‘eh’ heap, he turns his head, looks at you…
… and for a second you forget your own name.
That, to me, is beguiling. As far as actual beauty: resolutely pretty men, made beguiling by some bit of damage (Jason Momoa, with that cut bisecting his eyebrow; Pierce Brosnan with the scar above his mouth) those ‘flaws’ give them an air of (almost) gravitas, that humanizes their absurd beauty and makes me want to get to know what they might be like as a person; pretty, to me, is… pretty. And Floyd knows I love to look at pretty. But not for long because pretty quickly becomes boring, like nakedness (ymmv on that but I like to anticipate a body rather than having it delivered to me on a platter, like a side of beef. Post-beef, a sheet wound around the bits and pieces reignites my interest far more than the beef splayed out on the platter).
How does this relate to perfume? Well… I was looking through my Winter perfumes and came upon a decant of Aromatics Elixir…which, as you may know, is one of my most migraine-inducing perfumes! So. Why do I keep a decant of it? Because it is one of those perfumes that stays in my mind’s eye forever and it’s because there’s That Moment, when it turns its head and suddenly… and because it’s that beguiling I never can’t call up the scent.
Mitsouko, for all its beauty, can also be beguiling in that same way – facets are, in turn, gorgeous and terrifying. And sometimes downright ugly. But always captivating.
Speaking of ‘jolie’, Jolie Madame is another ‘beguiler’ – I have never been able to wear it and I actually don’t think it’s at all pretty! But just the name brings forth the scent and it makes its presence known in ways that a prettier (to me) and more wearable scent could never do.
Do you have any beguiling scents? Beguiling men/women? What is it about those people & perfumes that captivates us so?

Here’s a vintage picture of one of the most beguiling women ever – definitely not ‘pretty’ ( imo). But completely captivating. A friend met her at Cannes a few years back and said it was one of the more confusing experiences he’d ever had – he was in the midst of some of the most gorgeous, glamourous women… and here ‘she’ is, with a nose like an eggplant (his actual description) and sallow skin… not in especially great shape. Yet he couldn’t take his eyes off her. Only a cool head prevented him from following her around like a puppy! He’s still trying to figure it out.

You met my DH! The one in need of exfoliation. Before I met him I had a type, girlishly pretty, skinny & blond or a red haired. I preferred minimal body hair. Those fey 80s boys in guyliner were right up my street.
Then I met DH. Masses of black curls, body hair in excess, meat on his bones, receding chin, nose with its own postcode. Then he looks at you with dark blue stormy eyes, smiles & cracks a one liner. After 40 years he still makes me cry laughing.
My teenage best friend was plain as a pikestaff. So sallow she looked green, long nose, tiny eyes, average figure & height, mid brown hair. She was fun & intelligent & absolute catnip for the boys & men as we grew up. Very Jolie Laide
This made me GRIN!!!!
Beguiling also needs humour. I hope your grin was the one with a naughty twinkling eye, also beguiling
I like a mysterious smelling scent. I find chypres beguiling with their push me-pull you dynamic. They’re the scent opposite of smily fruity-florals, which I also enjoy when I’m in the right mood. Thanks for a beautiful essay!
Chypres are beguiling- there’s always Another Facet!
I have to play with the word beguiling some more. Jolie Madam is definitely beguiling!
I had an older woman once tell me that pretty boys/men are only good for occasional fun, but never for anything serious.
I like the picture of the woman from Cannes. It sounds to me as though that your friend was hit by the Sicilian thunderbolt – something known world-wide, with many different names – love at first sight. Whatever causes it seems to be unique to the person experiencing it and all the explanations for it sound like well-worded guesses.
PS
Thank you thank you thank you for mentioning the Badger series. I love them!!! You’re right, they are a hoot – so much fun and a great stress reliever. I’m on my 3rd one. I’m doing them in order. Charlie – Stevie – Max. 🙂 🙂 🙂
OMG! I am SO HAPPY you’re enjoying the Honey Badgers!!!!! I’ve got them on repeat for when the world is just Too Much!
I hear ya!!!!!lolololol
Half way through the sentence about Momoa and Brosnan I was thinking gravitas before I got to you saying it. Yes, that. Daniel Craig too. Kristin Scott Thomas. Nose too big for face, mismatched features but you want to keep looking. Also, Edward James Olmos even though he isn’t ‘pretty’.
Beguiling perfumes … Lumens Dompteuse Encagee because it’s beautiful but seemingly doesn’t care and Divine. It’s not good that AE is mean to you.
Agree with all you mentioned! I knew EJO for a brief time ( during a project) and he isa hot mess to look at, but astonishingly compelling, with the most luminous eyes!
I love that you love the marred and beguiling Musette. I’ve a few friends that fit the description and many acquaintances. Also, I get why BUT I also love transcendental beauty and never get tired of it. To be fair, my idea of that utter perfection is personal and Jin often scoffs at it. Once I’ve decided it’s beautiful only hideous thoughts, policies and treatment of others can change my mind. Like finding out Keira Knightly is doing the next round of JKRowling films. Her beauty turned in a heartbeat. It’s a bugger because I loved her so much.
Portia x
So with you that now anything JK Rowling touches turns to ashes. Evil woman.
lol y’all are talking about Rowling and Knightley like they are burning crosses in Mississippi when their “crimes” are, respectively, believing in the reality of biological sex and not being 100% aware of the controversy around Rowling. Log off and touch some grass. Perfume lovers never beating the allegations of being rarefied precious prigs. Rowling is a hero. WHAT IS A WOMAN?
You are soooooo in the wrong place Freddie dear..
Thanks, Freddie. I’m always relieved when someone is sane enough and brave enough to defend Rowling and the other women who wouldn’t wheesht.
Someday everyone will have been against this, but in the meantime mass delusion rules, children destroy their health and futures with damaging hormonal meds and mutilations, male criminals scam their way into women’s prisons by claiming gender change, and boys steal the sports awards that were reserved for girls.
I thought vintage Estee Lauder Azuree was beguiling. Harsh at first, but I couldn’t stop sniffing my arm. It evoked a fully-formed character in my mind: a wintery cold, fashionably whip-thin, middle-aged manhattan woman-with-a-past circa mid-century.
Wow what a pack of untruths here. Would be good to read some science on sex and gender difference before weighing in on this topic. Trans and intersex persons are people and those who insist gender is a simple binary are operating in the realm of pure fantasy. One with a huge social cultural and legal apparatus holding it up, alas. And just as some progress was being made on loosening the hold of these prejudicial views, the backlash.
I don’t normally respond or comment, but these two I can’t let go by despite the desire for perfume peace.
Agreed Amy. I’ve been trying to figure out how to respond and you just did so perfectly.
That’s heartbreaking – but understandable.
Transcendental beauty is phenomenal… but I find it exhausting to look at for too long.
I think I kind of am attracted to those Jolie Laid sort of scents just like I’m attracted to people like that. I could appreciate Robert Redford or Brad Pitt, but when I was young I was kvelling over Willem DaFoe and James Remar.
Me, too.Much more interesting!!!
Willem Dafoe in Platoon and Light Sleeper.
Christopher Walken is on my list with DaFoe.
Christopher Walken. Yes. Forgot about him. I both liked and disliked his looks. I could never figure it out. Beguiling works there.
Exactly!!
The ones that you can never figure out are the most interesting
Oh, yes! I could look at him for a very long time!
